Exactly, they would not see it as a hole from that direction or that height. The one cat that hesitated probably was just wary of the strange new object or just the color black, rather than thinking it was a hole

I would like to direct your attention to the fact that the only cat that actually stepped on the the abyss part is the one that was curious about it. Same with the dogs they didn't care much for this random abyss they just walked around it because they realized they could. Now could that just be a coincidence sure but I highly doubt that

Они все умницы! Не трусят, но кроме одной черной кошки никто не наступил на эту дыру! Они ее обходили! А та кошечка потрогала лапкой, проверила все и прошла спокойно по этой дыре. Она аналитически подошла к делу.

as Iunderstand it a lot of dogs got poor vision and goes on smell for a lot of things. The Eyes are for detecting motion.

You had the mat the wrong way. It was correct for the cameras point of view, but not when entering the room. And after they crossed it, they already knew it was safe and going over it, leaving the room, and as such seeing the visual deception, was not an issue anymore. Also, the animals look from much lower perspective than we do, it completely changes the whole picture. Lay on your stomach and look at it ;)
