Just scarified my Dads lawn, thanks for the inspiration. Scarified, aerated (throughly with garden fork) overseeded and put down preseed then composted rolled and watered Can you scarify too much if you still see moss? I did 5 passes with my electric scarifier and raked many times. I got a lot out but stopped at 5 because I was scared I was damaging the lawn Thanks Roy

Hi Shaun does your scarified have solid blades like slitting blades or spring wire hook's got a job to do & very thick moss in places 8" deep before I cut it my mower got marooned on it. I can't hire on of those caged rollers to top dress do you suggest fling it on with a shovel.
@LawnRight
@LawnRight Жыл бұрын
Hi mine is the fixed blades.. the thin spindly metal prongs will do a gentler job and sounds like you'll be there way way longer with that and maybe regret it. By all means try it and see how much comes out but you may have to to over it several times .. yeah you can make piles of dressing and brush them around just be careful brushing on bare soil as it can move some seeds

Hi Lee we dont share our prices I'm afraid but a typical scarify might take 1 to 3 hours. It depends on how much thatch is in the lawn and if it needs scarifying more than once. So pricewise depend son your own overheads and what you need to make to cover that, wages etc

That's not too bad, considering there was no top dressing. I think I'll do that (just over seed) when mine has taken hold, just to thicken it up in places where it's not so good. I've just finished my 270 square metre front garden, and HAVE top dressed with Field No.4 Organic Fine Grade Lawn Dressing on 200 square metres, but ran out so had to buy some emergency panic purchase regular multi compost with booster feed for the other 70 square metres (to finish the job). Oddly, the 200 square metres was one side of the garden (there was just enough of the Field No.4 organic dressing for that side - for guidance to others, 1,500 litres covered 200 square metres), and the other 70 square metres (8 x bags of 50 litre multi compost) was on the other side, with the driveway in between, so it will be interesting to see whether there is any difference in results between the two dressings. It is also interesting that the 70 square metres is roughly 1/3 of the 200 square metres, and the amount of compost used was 8 x 50 litre bags = 400 Litres, which equates to 5.7 litres per square metre, whereas the other 200 square metres, took 1,500 litres of the Field No.4 organic dressing, which equates to 7.5 litres per square metre. So which one covered the best, and which will perform the best? We'll see!

@@boyasaka Well around 3 weeks or so later, I'm quite happy with the results. To be honest, it's hard to see any difference between the two top dressings. If there IS a difference, it's not noticeable. I do have a lot of worm casts, and ruddy moles are digging here and there! I've no idea how to stop them. Typical - all my hard work, and a small rodent comes along and digs the place up!

Most of the instructions provided on boxed seed will tell you to lightly rake over the seed once spread to get them mixed into whatever soil is present. This has worked for me in the past but if you were going to add compost to your lawn it is better to time these two events to coincide.

@LawnRight

It shouldn't have stones on it for levelling purposes. But you can seive the soil. Not sure what's happened there but I wouldnt be best pleased. The main issue is wondering why it's gotten to that state.. and what is under the ground. I'd use a spade and dig a square out 1 spade width.. mark out the 4 sides approx 7 to 10 inches and push the spade in and try to go down at least 7 or inches. What should he there is at least 100mm of topsoil but I feel almost certain itll be very little or clay or rubble or stones. Sadly this is very very common at the minute

I have been inspired by watching many of your videos to do something about my lawn. In the 12 years of living in old converted barn on the edge of a field it has never been cared for at all. It is uneven covered in unbelievable amounts of moss and weeds with barely any actual grass. This week I have started the scarifying and in most patches to bare soil as most of the moss of weeds have come up before moving to aerating. Do you think I should actually put down lawn weed killer first and then wait to re-seed and top dress and would it be better to use top soil or a compost. Thank you kindly in advance for your advice. Dave
@LawnRight
@LawnRight Жыл бұрын
Hi Dave..if you use s typical weedkiller now you'll need to wait at least 4 to 6 weeks before reasonably ok to seed without the weedkiller affecting it.. this outs you into summer heat and the huge increase in watering needs,during and after its come through.. you could use roundup now but itll kill everything it touched including grass.... on the good side you are safe to start reseeding after 2 weeks. Only other option is to just seed and acceot weeds in the new lawn for a few months and use a general lawn weedkiller later in afew months.. good luck

Hi Shaun, many thanks for the videos. Can I ask a question. I have been suffering with ants in my lawn for about 2 years now. They have annihalted it with ant hills and kills patches of grass. I've tried everything from powders, granuels and bait stations. I even started digging in my lawn to try remove as much nest as possible. I've just cut my lawn really short today to start the scarification and noticed 2 more ant nests on the edge of my lawn. I've dug about 3-4 inches deep and about 3 inches wide along my border out in frustration. I've put granuels down now. Will I just fill this with top soil or would you put compost down first then top soil? And do you have any tips for ant nests? Maybe buy a more heavy duty grass? They seem to have come when my patio got put in. Thanks again, Shaun.

I think you could have told me none has germinated and I would have believed you. It just looks like the existing grew and got greener due to further in the season. I would have liked to see a close up of actual new short shoots. Doing reseeding in WA state and temps are still on the low side for germination, thus I wonder how much of this lawn's seed really germinated.

Hi Shaun, I’m in the process of completely renovating my lawn to include a herringbone drainage system. 5 tons of top soil was delivered, I was expecting not to see any stones in it but it has quite a few, is this ok for new turf to be laid on?

Hi.. this can happen sometimes sadly :(... Id be fairly ok to leave some small stones in like fingernail size at most but not too many maybe 1 or 2 per every 10cm square... roughly... if youve paid for and requsted screened soil and its not screened right Id certainly consider asking the supplier about it

I scarified mine and my in-laws 3 and 2 weeks ago. I didn’t top dress as I was testing the idea that if I lost seed due to elements bird etc it’s cheaper to buy more seed. Still struggling to get the seed to germinate. Weather hasn’t been great in Scotland cold windy but little to no rain so I’ve had to water daily where possible. Patience I guess but next time I will definitely topdress.

Inspired me to try again, scarified and seeded my lawn last year and it was going great until we got the hosepipe ban, couldnt keep the seedlings happy and most of it died off. I have since added in some salvaged turf to bare spots but worried its going to look odd as looks a different grass, is my best option just to scarify and over sow again? Also do you have any recommendations instead of the roller & lawn leveller? Would a lawmower with roller work? Limited on storage space as it is!
@LawnRight

Hi lawnmower with roller will be fine.. theres agood chance itll stand out from the other grasses yes but will blend over many months. Could always scarify the rest and reseed with similar, or just the patch

@@LawnRight Thanks so much for replying, im going to scarify & overseed hopefully this is the year! Do you recommend using a specific lawn topdressing or will any compost do? Love the videos Shaun. I tried a renovation following your steps in Autumn but results have been awful. The compost I used to top dress was very claggy so I think i had too thick a layer so probably killed off the existing grass. Timing was bad as there followed incessant rain which left 2 small lawns waterlogged - my soil is clay. I plan on trying again, with hollow tine aeration this time after scarifying and wobered if it is better to use a 70/30 top dressing mix in an attempt to improve the drainage or should I use just use compost? Thanks a lot.
@LawnRight
@LawnRight Жыл бұрын
Hi theres merits to both.. a 70 30 mix would be ok. So the ground has at least something different in there... flipside, the compost will get organic matter in there, and if you sprinkle some gypsum down... will slowly improve the soil over time... if you can dig super deep holes maybe with a post hole borer you can make bigger gains
@tinheadtinhead6505
@tinheadtinhead6505 Жыл бұрын
@@LawnRight Thanks Shaun, Would there be any merit in doing scarify, aerate and top dress with 70/30 then a few weeks later scarify, overseed and top dress with compost 0 or would that be overkill? Thanks

@@tinheadtinhead6505 Hi its not the worst thing Ive ever heard of doing. If you've heavily scarified the first time there won't be much left on the 2nd time, so just tread a little lighter but yes its definitely adding in much needed goodness
