I want to be better! don't we all? and the only way to do that is to, well, do stuff that we want to be better at. It doesn't mean everything is gonna turn out, but its through trying we learn what not to do, and its by doing that things get done. *mic drop...
Okay, I don't know what I'm talking about, but I know I need to practice to be better, so here is me, practicing watercolors. Wooo!!

Watercolors! This makes me happy! Your skin may have been patchy because it was a darker tone and generally darker colors get chalky depending on the quality of paints.

If you don't want it to be patchy, try for one direction strokes. This isn't a marker where you can go back and forth. You are literally pushing around pigment and when it settles, it'll stay where you put it. Zig zags are okay if they are sweeping, not quick back and forth. Try to get clean edges first and then fill in the center? This medium is meant for layering, like when you use your tablet to create digital. You can also apply those rules to watercolors, keeping in mind to work translucent to opaque, or weak to strong colors. This takes a lot longer than marker work, you could benefit from masking fluid. It helps with confidence. You are doing great!

My watercolor instructor about a year ago had us do a whole assignment of just making square washes, learning how to control the pigment lol I went a little farther than he asked and had pages and pages of squares really trying to get clean washes XD even after all than, I didn't really get crisp smooth washes until like 2 assignments later. It takes a lot to get comfortable with watercolors :P I love them now.

Mikkie, your right. But the skin color is an umber in the white nights set and highly granulating. In clean illustrations it will also appear splotchy, it would have been better to mix a skin tone from nongranulating colors for a clean look.

I'd like to make a suggestion I didn't see in the first couple pages of comments. In addition to making sure not to backtrack within washes, your paper is the single most important supply for watercolor. I have both the White Nights and Grace Art brushes and both should be fine for your washes, but cellulose/wood pulp paper is a toughy. It's referred to as "student grade" paper but should be more appropriately called economy, as it can discourage beginners when they start due to how difficult it can be to work with. Cotton paper on the other hand absorbs watercolor and pigment more evenly and will drastically help with consistency in washes. I have plenty of extra paper samples if you'd like me to send you some, just let me know! :)

@InLiquidColor
@InLiquidColor 6 жыл бұрын
The two main categories are cellulose/wood pulp (like Canson XL, Canson Montval, Arteza, and just about any other "student" grade paper) and cotton rag (there are so many brands). Cotton rag is more absorbent and will hold your colors much more evenly. When it comes to upgrading to a cotton paper, I'd recommend trying whatever is most affordable for you to start. They all handle a little differently and you may have a different preference than I do. A few of my personal favorites are Arches Cold Pressed, Hahnemuhle Cezanne Cold Pressed, and Blick Premier Hot Pressed, all in 140lb weight. Aqua Bee makes a nice entry level cotton paper, just check the wording on Amazon to make sure you're getting the cotton one. They come in smaller 6x9 in sheets. If you want further recommendations, I actually have a video comparing something like 20 brands if that would be helpful :)

As someone who ONLY DOES WATERCOLOR and cannot handle other mediums for my life, you have no clue how happy this made me!!!!!! Seeing that even your favorite artists find your favorite medium tricky, even though you think theirs is completely impossible, really puts perspective on things!!! We all have strengths! (Although tbh you did very well with this ESPECIALLY given you’re less experienced, if you kept at it for like a year you’d be a pro!) I find with skin tones, the trick is variation. In my experience, flat washes of skin similar to what you attempted never turn out. I often go for only putting the actual skin paint in slightly more shadowed areas, then blending the skin tone out if the subject is paler, although I have far less experience with tanner/darker shades do I can’t give advice there. By the way, I REALLY think you should invest in different brushes, those looked AWFUL to work with! I found the Daler Rowney Graduate round brushes are nice, although I actually just bought myself a relatively cheap set of calligraphy brushes that work even better! It was like $25 for eight brushes of varying sizes from huge to so small I can paint individual hairs if I want, AND they came in a really nice bamboo case! They all hold their points super well which is useful for precision! Buying them was a HUUGGGEEE game changer for me. I’m not saying you absolutely need to get those, but you for sure need to get something better there!!!!! I’d recommend watching Arleebean’s videos by the way. Her style is completely different than yours, but at least in my own work I’ve learned so much by watching her!

Watercolour Tip! One of the most important rule when you watercolour is to build up the colour slowly. The way you colour skin is akin to the way you colour block with your markers. Next time when colouring a character's skin (or any part of the character for that matter) dilute the pigment and start with a light wash of colour then slowly build up on the colour instead of starting with a very saturated colour. Although this rule can be broken if you want to colour block a large area that you need to be saturated, watercolouring, especially skin, is a process of building up slowly. When you start with a very saturated colour, it then becomes harder to lift the colour, make the colour lighter or exchange with another colour (as seen from your video when colouring her skin) and it especially makes the colours a whole lot smoother! Remember! Start a light, diluted wash of colour and gradually build it up! Your art is amazing and keep with your art! I'm cheering for you and I hope my tip has helped you in your watercolour art journey!

Watercolour tip: I always find the most colour stays closest to the brush or where you ah w placed the most water so make sure to end your strokes close to the edge lines to give the inside a smooth wash and still give a bit of shading to the line art 😋

My tips for you :) - 1) To get a clean wash, add a layer of water to the page but don’t puddle it. Then it should be wet but not absorbed or puddled. The water can dry quickly so have your paint ready to just lay on the page. If it still has a streaky feel, add a wash from a damp brush. To get the damp brush, dip a clean brush in water then dry it with a paper towel. So the brushes are wet, but not full of water. 2) To get a good gradient of color is to wet the paper with a puddle, then use a paper towel to absorb the water off the page. Add a line of color that is dark/saturated where you want the darkest bits to be, it should kind of fade out on its own. If not don’t worry, just let it dry then using a wet brush (not too much water) drag the color down/outwards following the line from the shape of the object. 3) If you want to make a shadow effect, put the brush, with the color, down at the darkest place and from there paint outwards, then bring all the saturation back to the darkest point and lift the brush there. Sometimes it can just look like a dot of pigment so use a fine tip from a point brush, and flare it out slightly. This is difficult to do at times so I personally suggest you wait a bit, like 1 min, before you start to flare the paint. It takes practice but it gets easier as you do it more often. I’m no professional though, I’m just a young teen, but I’ve loved watercolor for 5 years now so I picked up these tricks! I really hope they help you. :) your an inspiration to me. ❤️😝😂 :) love you waffles! ❤️ good luck with watercolor! I know you can do it! Your amazing! 😂😆❤️❤️🎨 the art piece in this video was Dope af though, so if you are a beginner at watercolor, that was amazing... if not, it was still better than me and a lot of people I now when we started watercolor. ;)

I’m also a beginner at watercolor, but one trick I use is that when doing the colored pencil sketch, take the kneaded eraser and dab it all away, then go over it a bit once again with the colored pencil. You can make it as sketchy as you want, but I going over it can make it just a little bit neater that could overall bring the piece together while still keeping the lines underneath the final product like how you wanted. Although, I honestly think you did an amazing job despite your lack of experience with this medium.

Aw this drawing is beautiful and I love the swimsuit she has on❤️ with the watercolors when you’re adding a color I recommend having a spare paper to test out the color first then with your plate (the thing that most watercolors have to mix your colors) put water first with a water droplet or your brush and just add color until you get the color you’re going for. I do this when I’m using dark colors because they can be a little tricky and it helps lay the colors better.

This might be 100 times in the comments, but canson XL really doesn’t take layers well c: it’s fine if you only want to do one layer, or work with ink, but really, for more then one layer it’s really hard not to lift the color beneath and have it not look patchy c: really, a lot of papers are better, maybe be extra and try arches, it’s not that expensive on amazon, and it’s really worth it! I don’t think it’s about the paints, they are good, they can give you pretty good results c:

I think you should work bigger in the beginning. When i started out i just drew like i always had, very tiny with many details... which wasnt a good idea. When you work bigger its easier to control your water and make sure you dont paint over the edges and in my opinion its just easier to focus on actually painting, and not worrying about making a mess :D

Try thin down your colours for the details just a bit more from the start. That will leave you room to add more shades and details with another glace later. And a piece of scrap paper to test out your colours is probably also an idea until you get to know your pallet better. :) I wonder if your brust is maybe a little bit too soft? I personally like a firm synthetic brush for details. It won't hold as much water but is easier to control. The paper looks like it is playing in a bit too. I haven't tried it myself though, so I cant say too much about it. And yes, I know the feeling of trying desperate to save something that isn't turning out as hoped for... :) I guess most have tried that. Keep going, you are heading the right direction.

To get or not to get pachty and streaky layers of watercolor depends on how much water you use the pigment with. For the skin, it seemed like you used rather much pigment and little water, so the water would dry way quicker and the pigment would stuck on the paper before you were done spreading it on the part you wanted to cover. And thus, you got strokes! So try to use a little more water. I use the same watercolors btw, and because they're pigmented like hell I think they tend to get patchy more often! Hope that helps ^^'

It’s great to see you doing watercolor again! I find that when I’m painting skin, to get a really soft look, I like to use a softer brush (a sable hair brush is great for this but you can find less “springy” cheap synthetic alternatives) other than that, if you wanted to try a different paper, go for strathmore 400 series. It’s very affordable and much better than the cannon paper you’re using, in my opinion.

Midoru _ when painting, work in areas, let a spot dry and work on the same area later. Also use shapes, it makes painting a lot more easier.

100% cotton paper is a life SAVER!!! It makes my painting experience sooo much better and paper plays a BIG part in how the watercolors work so 100% cotton paper is great (I use bee paper because I lift a lot and it's fairly inexpensive too!)

First off, I think you're amazing by just digging in regardless of feeling nervous or apprehensive! Your painting still turned out super cute and I adore her design! I struggled(and still struggle) with watercolor because it's a medium that you have to let go of some control with. The biggest thing I can say to practices is water control and learning wet in wet techniques with wet on dry and the different effects they achieve to get a feel towards what you enjoy more. The Mind of Watercolor here on youtube has an amazing series strictly for these beginner tips that I go back and reference like crazy! For smoother and less patchy work it honestly takes a lot of experimenting and I gained some great insight from Thomas Romain here on youtube. He explains that for smooth washes you want to push the water towards the area you are planning on covering so you are constantly spreading the water forward in a smooth motion versus going back and filling something in piece by piece making it appear patchy. Glazing, or layering is something I would highly recommend practicing! I've already seen you accomplish this with your marker swatches and testing and it's the same just applied to watercolors! That way you see how colors interact with one another(some don't mix well) as well as texture changes if some granulate. Danica Sills has some great videos on greating glazing charts and how to make smooth gradients! Lastly, I ran into the same issue you had with the liners and REALLY struggled to define parts of a piece without making it stand out like a store thumb. The step you took for the colored pencil is amazing! And you're absolutely right, the same idea applies to liners but I think it becomes more experimental at that point. I ended up following Torianne/Juicy Ink's ideas and she uses the Hi-Tec C fine liners you can find on Amazon. They're so so so thin and the detail they provide is amazing without overpowering the piece! OR you can get a detail brush and use very little water to line using the same color but with higher pigment :D Sorry for the giant wall of text, but I got super excited to see you going through the same learning steps! I hope I was able to help even a little :>

I think that maybe instead of using a black fine liner, I would've used a red one or a pink one thays close to the color of the pencil. But over all it looked really great and awesome! Love your videos💕

If you're having trouble figuring out what to draw, maybe pick out two of your previous artworks, then make a new one sort of "combining" the two and end up with something different, new, unique, and possibly something you wouldn't have done otherwise. I like to do this when I'm not sure what to draw on my channel and its usually fun to do

The most likely culprit for making it challenging for you to get an even wash is the canson paper. If you used 100% cotton paper (expensive) like Arches, it would be waaaay easier. It also helps to lightly wet the full area where you want an even wash before you begin to paint. This helped you with your background (even though you were aiming for a gradient there, you still wanted even coverage at any point on the gradient).

aartadventure arches paper is crazy expensive, tho! Probably something in the middle of canson/arches would be better. It's like getting a 150$ pack of copics whilst using markers as a beginner still .

Oooh~ geat job!!! That looks awesome!!! The bigger the piece, the easier it is to really have allot of freedom with any experimental techniques you want to try, especially with playing with how the water and pigment move and interact, which is an awesome part of watercolour. Keep up the good work!

Just a tip that helps me (may not necessarily a profesional tip): Try going in with more water than pigment then slowly add in more pigment with layers. It helps my work become a little more finished (ik that doesn't make sense... sorry).

I love this piece! It’s so cute! Two tips that helped me 1)swatch and plan colors ahead of time. See how they contrast, blend, and how they dry before working on your piece. Unlike other mediums, you can’t layer over mistakes. So planning colors ahead of time is super helpful. And 2) mix your own colors. And to make it more cohesive, use similar colors. For example use new gamboge for her hair then mix new gamboge and pyrrol scarlet for the skin. Stuff like that really help! Can’t wait to see more!

I love it. I’m new with watercolour as well. I see all these amazing images of portraits where there’s what looks like virtually no pigment was added at all, and then the faces have all these layers. So. Many. Layers. So. Much. Patience. I find myself adding thick, intense colour right off the bat, and by the end of my piece I’m left wondering “should I just be a gouache girl?” Lol So kudos for the patience, that’s a big hurdle for me. Learning about how different the wash looks once it’s dry. This video is probably older, as it had zillions of views already, but I enjoyed it - thanks, Rin!
