Me, I asked. There was a lady just up the road from me, 2 blocks away from me that was shot in the head. We keep my door shut and gate locked when we are in the salon, and when I am alone in the shop and someone comes to the door, I always check who it is through the window before opening the door. Like you always say, it is what it is.

As a South African living in the Western Cape its difficult to fathom the critique that problems in some parts of our country are symptomatic of a larger malaise. It is tantamount to saying let me emigrate from the USA because there are mass shootings at schools malls or cinemas. The problem really centres around sharing and nasie bou. To think that societies are not transformative requires a retrospective look at that country's history. Let's use Australia Canada and the USA as examples where many South Africans favour as emigration destinations. What these countries have in common is that their indigenous populations are a minority. Whereas here it's the other way round. Hence another perspective needs to be found navigate these challenges. Sadly the South Africans that face the brunt of the violence are previously disadvantaged communities in any case and they have no where to go. Your comments around porous borders decaying infrastructure are true within a context but not an absolute truth ! If South Africa is going to work for all its going to take more than government will and action. Every able South African will have to be proactive and a willing participant for positive social change as it's way too risky to leave this in the exclusive hands of politicians. We are proud of our country and its achievements. I know many South Africans who went abroad seeking better prospects and opportunities and have made a good life for themselves but there are many of us who have stayed home and enjoy a happy safe and financially secure life in South Africa. My best wishes to those who have chosen to live elsewhere kuier maar lekker !😢

Hope you come back Brother. Situation is very bad, we need your skills. BEE is a total mess. The resentment policies of the ANC are slowly dying, not fast enough though. South Africa was not built by a single race a lot of the basic core skills came with the Eoropean settlers more than 400 years ago, and they changed how native Africans were doing things. Pity that some decisions were made that neglected some races, hence the resentment, but I'm a believer that we need all South Africans to come back home. Races are gifted with different intelligences and we need the White race in our country. Some South African black people are aware, but change takes time. The amount of know how in the white community is enormous, allowing Soo many to leave creates a huge gap, it becomes almost impossible to have enough depth to teach at schools, university and run World class businesses. Only few can access the knowledge. I grew to understand that enequality is all about skills not race. It the race with skills that bring progress and race itself is not controlled by humans, it's just how life adaption built us as humans. South Africa will get there. All nations have their past, and it's only with time that we will get the balance to allow genuine progress for all without limiting opportunities based on race. 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🙏🙏🙏

Western Cape is in better shape in 2024 than when I left in 2001. No litter, roads are great, economy is fairly buoyant. You still have to be alert for sure but it’s not worse than the 90s . The downside is whites are expelled from the economy so getting a job is out of the question. Entrepreneurship is the only way or you live off your assets generating income offshore. However that could change with the new govt. I’m seriously thinking of going back from NZ.

@SouthAfricansinVancouver6 ай бұрын
In 1976 I was 5 years old, so no, I don't remember it. I also don't recall ever insinuating that apartheid was the great days, but then I suppose I can't help you understand things.

@VancouverInsiders what's 30 years of 500 damages to people?!? Nothing!! The generation of blacks born 30 years ago is unskilled, has no education, lives in slums with no hope abmnd that is the majority of black South africans! Who are the black people governing South Africa? The same who came from that situation and condition as above-described! Worse of all, who are the people who control the economy, the land, and the real source of development in South Africa? Are the 7.2% of white people who owns the economy against 82.8% non-white poor prople! That minority don't even pay taxes because all the money is deposited offshore (UK, Australia, Canada, USA, etc., etc.)!! Who created the corrupted BEE? White people as a tool to destabilize everything! I could go on and on! This is the legacy of your favorite Apartheid system and will take generations and generations to correct this situation!
