Why I had to LEAVE Africa!

Being transparent about my reasons for leaving Africa.

I love this perspective. I travelled to america as an african and from what i experienced, i would want to live there. I realised that i prefer living in africa. I learnt to appreciate what we have in Africa and not to glorify america as its being potrayed on media. The grass is greener where you water it. I only travel as a tourist but when it comes to settling and retirement, i feel safe and loved by my african community. I realised that i dont need to date or be married to an american since all men are the same, the only difference is mindset and access to opportunities. Its a paradox.

@AntonsClass I had the misled mindset that coming to America will 'save me' only to land at JFK and experienced racism from black folks for the first time in my life. I found that people are so mean and selfish. It's all about chasing the bag. People don't have communities like here in Kenya where I live. It was shocking to me. I also met African America who pretended to be black Americans, faking their African accent, which was very fake and distasteful for me. I could watch my loved ones work back to back and come back home very tired and I felt petty for them because Africans who don't travel will never understand the hustle in America and how it's hard because of bills to pay. Also, I am not used to the credit system. I am used to buying all my stuff with cash. I hate debt, and because of that, I had to re-think the quality of life I wanted, and I realised I prefer African systems. It's free. I don't feel like a slave when in Africa. I am also not used to living in a country where people have guns casually. I find Africa safer than America, you will never hear of school shootings or neighborhood shootings here. It was so strange to me. I actually have time for my passion, family, and friends, which is rare to find in America or Europe. I also found it shocking that homes in America don't have fences, unlike in Africa. I found them very insecure. In Africa, we have our own shortcomings and less cash flow because we are a young continent that is growing exponentially. I wouldn't trade my freedom and simple life in Africa for any other continent. I've learned to accept and embrace the differences.

Too many African Americans (and Americans) in general complain a lot about what they have and fantasize about the grass being greener. I was one of those years ago and lived abroad. Long story short, I learned that the U.S is not perfect but it's the best place for me and I think everyone who chronically complains that they hate it here, should absolutely leave then re-evaluate. If they are happier elsewhere than that's a blessing too.

I love being American. I don't call myself African-American because I'm not African. I love being American and living in America. I travel quite often but I LOVE LIVING in America. I go to other countries for a good time not a long time. People who constantly complain I want them to leave and live elsewhere and come back with their real experience because baby I know ain't nothing like America. People die trying to get here for a reason. You can't escape discrimination as a brown American. They either hate you for being American or Brown most times both. You are safer at home.

I wonder why so many people feel the need to pick up and move completely? Most diasporans of all sorts work in the West and build back home over time. Black Americans can do the same. Live here and build a honeycomb hideout in the motherland to visit and take a break from the Belly of the Beast until you're fully ready for a permanent move (if ever). I would have never appreciated home had I not left! At 55, I did not go looking for love, but I was looking for a “Black” community! Well, needless to say, my community is at home in America! As a Pan Afrikan Nationalist I have learned that their are two types of Afrikans one is the continental Afrikan and two is the Diasporian Afrikan. Both are Afrikans but with different shared experiences, due to different forms of enslavements and colonizations. My first marriage was to a continental Afrikan woman from Ghana. All was beautiful as long as we stayed in Afrika. Due to American brainwashing as usual, Afrikans on the continent and on islands like Jamaica where I am originally from due to slavery, are hell bent on thinking that going to America will change their lives for the better. So when you let them know that your chosen home is afrika most will show their true colors if they are not truly in love with you such was the case with my Ghanaian ex wife. My current marriage is with my best friend from my village in Jamaica and she is way more comfortable for obvious reasons and she Alis desire to go live in Afrika as well due to our shared long time apathy for all things American other than the educational and financial opportunity. As Peter Tosh sang no matter when you come from as long as you black you are an Afrikan. As long as we are maintaining Afrikan Traditional Family culture then all is good. No snow bunny hopping and definitely no gender dysphasia relationships of confusion and death.

Something similar happened to me. I think I was searching for home, somewhat dissatisfied with the US. I’ve traveled to Asia, Europe and two countries in west Africa. Although I loved visiting Africa - I realized the US is home. I had to take a second look and I realized all that we African Americans do have here. My travels made me that more appreciative of what we have and more curious to learn and know more about my own people. We have a beautiful rich culture - we have history here, ties to the land. We do have family and community - as well as all of the conveniences that come with living here. You do at times need to move a certain way but if you know how, then you’re good. Also the US is a huge country that I’d love to explore more of. Does it have it’s not so good, absolutely - but if you focus on the good you can live well, or at least decently here. And for me, this is home. Also, it’s ok to change your mind - to move back home or to another country.

This is a very interesting topic for me personally. We all have such amazing and unique journeys. This is mine. I was born in Kenya and came to the US as a kid with my parents. My dad was studying here. I was in the US from the age of 5 to the age of 10. Very formative years! I absorbed American culture and also learned to speak English with a "middle American" accent. When I was 10 our family went back to Kenya. My parents never had intentions of settling in the US. It was clear to them from before leaving Kenya that we were coming for my dad's education and we would go back to Kenya. Back in Kenya, I re-met my extended family and re-learned my native language. But still spoke English with an American accent. Along with my American cultural background, my accent made me an oddity even among family members. I never really fit in and longed to come back "home" to the US. I spent the next 12 years in Kenya and eventually came back for college when I was 22 years old. By then I had absorbed a lot of my Kenyan culture again. When I came back to the US, it really did feel like a "homecoming". I didn't go back to Kenya, not even for a vacation, for 19 years! Eventually, though, I did go back. I had gotten my US citizenship by that time so I had dual citizenship. Since then I have been going back and forth between Kenya and the US. I am nearin retirement age and fully plan on going to live my last days in Kenya. After all these years in the US I have never quite "fit in" here either. I am at the same time American and foreign. I have never referred to myself as African American but don't feel that I will ever be completely Kenyan either. I am caught between. Partly as a result of this in-betweenness, I have never been able to settle with a spouse. Besides family members, I don't have any friends in Kenya either. My friends in the US tended to be international people and are flung far and wide all over the US and the world! They have their families and communities. Strangely I don't feel badly about my situation. I am looking forward to living in Kenya in retirement. The US is most definitely a country that is good for young people! I cannot fathom growing old here with no family close by. I greatly appreciate the US for who I am today, and I also love my home country of Kenya, even though socially, I feel far more an alien there than in the US! I don't know what the future has in store but I have always been an adventurous person who can live just about anywhere. BTW, my experience is typical for what is known as a "Third Culture Child". That is, children who spend significant parts of their lives living away from the culture of their birth. You become an international person who does not fully identify with any one culture. We have our unique challenges in the world, but we also have incredible strengths and such discerning perspectives on the world in general.

Shows the difference between being stolen and brought over and enslaved verses traveling abroad to a further country, its like the flip side of the coin being able to grow up in the place you came from. Thanks for sharing your story. Yet again, I am enlightened. I've gone down the ytube rabbit hole on this topic and was amazed to find out how many black Americans have decided to go back to the US after living in Africa. However, I completely understand why, given the many perils of such an endeavor. I once had a long-term desire of wanting to relocate to Africa because of my negative experiences from working in the US workforce, however, I have since changed my mind and too have decided that I can and will succeed in the US. Me and my 2 children went to live in West African Senegal🇸🇳 June 2023. (Not knowing it’s the most expensive country on the continent, I thought it was Nigeria) I wanted to make it our new home but I quickly seen major differences and we were also addressed as foreign or just American. We stayed 10 months almost a year we left March 22 2024. It was nice and I like it but financially on top of having to learn 2 different languages Wolof & (the colonizers French) it was just too much being a single mother. I needed true genuine friends & love

As a South African, I can only talk about SA. If you want to live a good life in SA, plan well before you move. Visit different cities first, such as Johannesburg, Capetown, Durban, Gqeberha, Pretoria etc. and see which one you like the most because hey, these cities are so different. South Africa is so diverse, even black South Africans have different cultures and languages. When I moved to Pretoria from the Eastern Cape being Xhosa, I couldn't understand a word in Tswana 🤣. I had to fully depend on English. If you have a job back home, don't just quit and move. You can apply for a digital nomad visa if you can work remotely and earn +/-$53000 p/a. Keep earning your dollars, pounds etc. The rand is much lower, so your dollar can do wonders for you. If you are an entrepreneur, again, do your research and plan well. South Africa has great business opportunities. Big cities in SA can be brutal if you run out of money, like almost anywhere in the world.

I did travel to Africa, because, I met an Ethiopian while I was teaching in another country and a colleague introduced us while he was in Ethiopia. I eventually moved to Kenya and we met there. He was unable to travel to other African countries. That was a disaster. I literally had to support him and myself. We are no longer together and I would never support someone again like that.

Our uncestors who were enslaved in America for 400 years reinvented their identity and became African Americans. I personaly being a South African understands why you will never be the same again. Your African American culture of living in an inviroment that the west made it for you and the evolution AAs had wilst in a foreign continent, the ability to adopt ,will forever live within you. @@Seeta_sa_gauta Mr Seeta I did study Earthnology at university. I write comments according to how the book and my lecturer made me to undrestand it. In South Africa we have institutions that are regarded the best in the whole world. The black Americans were shielded from studying about their origin as Africans. Now they have found us, Let us ebrace their African American culture but we must not forget that the education they had received, the west did try to hide their Africanicity to a certain extend. Only wars and femine was what they know about the continent. The west dont want us to unite. It is because we have any raw minerals and some they lie untouched. I was born in London and move to United States when I was 16 and lived here ever since. I’m moving to Liberia. It’s a no brainer. There is too much opportunity in Aftica. You have to focus on yourself not women and establish yourself first. Once your business grows then you get the woman. Also you have to live within your means eg no restaurants everyday. Grab a shovel and plant your food and build a self sustainable home egg solar power, borehole etc and you will make it. Africa is a no brainer

Growing up in NYC exposed me to other cultures. In addition to American friends, I had Korean, Haitian, Yugoslavian, Czechoslovakian, Chinese, and Indian friends growing up. Also, being in the military gave me hands-on experience of living in and visiting other countries. I can appreciate different cultures, but there's nothing like home. Unfortunately, I haven't had the time to visit South Africa or Namibia. Those two countries are definitely on my list of places to live someday, along with Mexico, Costa Rica, and the Azores. I pray love finds you and God blesses you with your desires according to His will and timing. In the meantime, don't settle!

My parents left Jamaica in the 50s looking for a better life in England. Life was extremely challenging for them. They never earned enough money to be able to go back to Jamaica. Listening to you I hear financial difficulties as the major reason you couldn't realize your African dream..Supporting person X or O is a lame excuse, females even in the United States look up to a man to provide their comfort. I dated Black girls in America & I was always their financial backer even when going out for a date... The problem I see is that many of the governments aren't helping to build up the countries but want foreigners to do it for them. This is not a good look. Many countries in Africa are too poor to build. The Chinese and other people who are not Africans are bringing their money because they have a better vision than Africans and will take over. China has more than a billion people. You don't think they are looking for land that they can take from the Africa continent. This is the reason those people are welcome with opening arms, yet many in Africa want to exploit the people that look like them. Some of them don't realize that the earned money was not created by the people but earned because they had to slave and save money in order to create wealth for themselves. Africa should be a lesson each one teaches one so the people that look like them can connect becoming one. Too many countries don't even work together because of culture differences. All I see is Africa becoming like the west. Corporations from abroad are taking over. Meanwhile the masses of people are very poor and will never lift themselves out of poverty because many of the governments are corrupt and looking out for their benefit and doing the less for the masses of people in the many countries of Africa.

The African politicians were all Africans. Most of Africans lacks of critical thinking. Majority don't even have ability to think positively. Africa is a BIG PLACE and I think it would take some time to figure out what cultural/ethnic area would really fit my personality and mindset, So we black Americans know something about Ghana, South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya. The bigger English language countries, But maybe a different area of the continent we're not familiar with is really a good fit. We are the first generation of black people to freely move around WORLD in centuries as free men and not property. So we're just beginning to reach out to each other across the oceans. The United States is an egalitarian 50-50 culture. White people are the majority. Statistically 47% of white women earn higher salaries than their white husbands. Mathematically couples that go 50-50 build wealth 4 times faster than those who don't. It's why whites are collectively richer than black people because white couples earn and invest together. White couples in the United States their ancestral Western Europe homelands go 50-50 in an egalitarian way. It's where we get the phrase "going Dutch". Asian and Hispanic couples do the same. Hispanic women work the hardest, dirtiest jobs in the U.S. as maids, cleaners, hotel workers, fruit pickers, home health aids, and many other difficult jobs and Hispanic women use the money they earn to support & invest into their households for their future. Black women are some of the only women looking to be "provided" for. Other races of women are in the workforce and use their money to invest into their households

I think it’s more of the adventure, also maybe the ties are easier to sever when dating/marrying abroad, as for the u.s there are many obstacles for divorce. Some brothers who date overseas are compelled because local attractive women don’t give them a chance, whereas overseas they are given attention, it’s also a small percentage of men who date overseas, the white men are a large percentile of those, esp if you go to places like south east Asia

I have enjoyed your video We have so much in common; and I experienced the hardship of being abroad in Africa I traveled to Gambia(West Africa), and as you have discussed being abroad can bring hardship if you are not having any capital! Gambia is a tourist area, and I stayed there for three months.It was very expensive to stay there, and I returned back to Alabama. I am a Teacher as well, single and no children. 9:06 dating is an exchange. Foreingers go to countries where people may have less money and often use those people. Either for sex, tour guides etc, and then leave. So, if the local person gets involved with a foreigner they need to have assurance the person wont just up and leave. You need a business idea and understanding of how to do business in the country you want to live in. 3. Sufficient money to do business 4. When you check the DNA it all leads back to Africa. So, we Afro Americans are all from the African Continent. When we were sold into slavery starting back to 1500's this started blacks migrating to all parts of the world. Some Africans display prejudice towards Jamaican, Afro-Americans, Black folks in England, etc. This is so wrong. We were on the boat that happened to drop us off at different ports. I was born and raised in Africa but i have always fancy traveling abroad... last year the dream finally came true and boom.. It made me appreciate home even more.. I have completed my master's degree having a job and honestly, I don't like it here except for the money cause obviously it pays more than in africa. I have learned that black people abroad we have literally very litle if nothing in common except the same skin color... all this to say that if God is to bless you he can do it in different ways and most time it takes going after what we think matters to actually realize what really matters and what makes our life fulfilled. Meanwhile, you're the first person I've heard who still has these values of having a stable family life, children and such... most people I have met here don't believe in God, and don't think it matters to have a family life ..aha I find it a very sad way of looking at life. Anyhow so many pros and cons but nothing ever gets better than home.. haha

Take everything slow bro! I visited the continent four times (Ethiopia and Kenya) and i have no regrets. I recently started a group home business in the United States because I needed to find a way to support myself when traveling overseas. Another friend of mine (who came back to the states) started a tree cutting business, and so you can always start a business in America too! For that will most definitely help when it comes to living in Africa long term.

Everything happens for a reason!!! I also thought about moving to Africa but God has a funny way of showing you some things... With all the stories about what has been happening in Africa with the disporians have taught me a lot and I'm glad I didn't rush into moving to Africa just because of what's happening here in America and the selling of all of my things and giving up my apartment would have been devastating...starting over isn't that easy...I live in New York City...it's not that easy to start all over especially if you don't have family...so...I have to get it right!!! I'm not moving to any Country or state unless I have a passive income coming in or some kind of income that brings in some kind of resources...I have been doing research on Africa for about 4 years and I was so hell-bent on buying land...building a home in Africa but I just don't like the things that I'm hearing and seeing as far as how they're treating African Americans over there..the stealing of land...the unaliving of some disporians in certain parts of Africa...it's so deep and I never want to put myself in a situation where something happens to me...especially coming as a single woman...I do like Rwanda but I have to still do some research...I will say this...if I do go to Africa I have to come to buy and build...I don't want to have to rent in Africa...it's getting expensive...you have to own...there's no other way

That's because you still don't get it that Africa is not a country but a continent with 54 countries. What's happening in Gambia and Ghana is not whats happening in other countries. You don't need 4 years of research if you have access to 24/7 high speed internet. I can research any country within a few days to understand the environment, culture and economy.

@jayajaya788. Yes, please do your research carefully. I have been to Rwanda it's one of the least corrupt country in Africa. The country has a zero tolerant for corruption. It's a beautiful country. My only problem which is minor is I can't do those hills 😆 I need to live on flat land. Kenya is another beautiful country.

i have been to Africa several time. It it weren't for the difficutly in securing permanent residency, I would have stayed, no doubt. Now I cannot return to Ghana, which was the easiest to stay legally, long term, becuase I am past the age where they innoculate me against yellow fever. You know, sadly, most black people in America who decide to go to Africa or make Africa their home or disappointed because they are just not ready. They still consider themselves American first and foremost as it is something to be proud of. They fail to realize or to accept how indocrianted we really are, or so have not prepared themselves mentally, even though they think they have. You have to have that love for yourself as African and the love for African people. I made friends easily because the people could feel my vibe and my love. I did not expect perfection and did not care when I very raretly encountered negativity. Bottom line. MOST OF US ARE JUST NOT READY PERIOD, SORRY. With all the hell we catch in America, we still cling to some kind of fantasy that is the best place for black people. It is sort of a machochistic attitude as far as I am concerned. We are humiliated in America every damn day, if you are really paying attention to what is happening and do not have your eyes wide shut.

I live in AZ as well. Had my whole Africa experience and ended up marrying and divorcing a Nigerian. I’m glad you didn’t end up getting married. It’s so serious…especially in this common law state we’re in where you can end up having to divide everything down the middle with someone who has nothing. Definitely not worth it. In my case, my wife and I built our business from ground up together. If an unfortunate circumstance were to occur where we're faced with divorce, she deserves half of the company and one of the properties in her name.
