Colostrum is also the most nourishing / first milk that is produced after having a newborn. After it is just breast milk - which is different for sure then formula. But very challenging.

This is an EXCELLENT video. I breastfed my son for 3 years and it was easy for me. He HATED bottles. But here’s the thing, my nipples still hurt in the beginning, I still got a plugged duct, still got mastitis, still went through growth spurts and BITING. Breastfeeding is work and even a good relationship has issues. What I took away from my breastfeeding experience is that the level of support and help you need to establish your breastfeeding and just being a new mum in general is WAY more than we are lead to believe. My SIL had her son and needed help. I went over and spent the WHOLE DAY with her. I helped her at every feed. And you know what? It helped but if I could have been there for a few days to sit with her, watch her nursing and help her I KNOW it would have been even easier. We mothers need community around us. Other women being around having different experiences and having people physically be there to help and let new mothers and babies REST and bond on recover.

I really hope no one ever gives Kristen any bs about how she is expressing herself on her mom journey and I really hope she never stops updating us on her mom journey because I believe it is real and raw and what at least I need to hear instead of all the sugarcoating, I feel she is really trying to create awareness of what really goes down as a new mom journey. I am 36 weeks pregnant and have been tuning in even before I got pregnant since this is my rainbow baby so I really appreciate Kristen‘s knowledge and experiences because it is really helping me, and opening my eyes With questions I have ❤ love you Kristen

This video is so great!!! I wish I had this when I was struggling with my first. He had a tongue and lip tie and would not latch. My pediatrician just told me to stick it out and he would get it eventually. Well that never happened. He screamed and cried because he was hungry and I finally made the decision to give him formula and he was so much happier!! I felt so guilty and it was hard for me to come to terms with my body “failing” me. Then with my second she latched immediately and I exclusively breastfed her for almost 2 years! So many factors go into feeding your baby and I feel like if more people talked about things like this so many more women would have a more positive experience and not having such horrible guilt. So happy you made this video and I’m sure so many mamas are feeling very seen right now! ❤

That little Harlow pop in was so cute, its so cool watching her grow up. I see her arsenal of words is growing, its so dang adorable when they get to that age and to where they just repeat back everything you say to them like a parrot. 🤣 Happy to see your having an easier go at breastfeeding with baby boy Wyatt, I can only imagine the struggle and I'm sure its hard not to beat yourself up if things aren't going to what you planned but I think its like you said everything has to align just so and you really need to give yourself grace. Great video as always Kristen! ❤

Gosh Harlow is talking so well! She seems so bright! And it just goes to show that a baby that’s been on formula develops and grows just as well as a breastfed baby. Breastfeeding is a wonderful thing but it’s not easy at all. Back in the day, they used to say that non breastfed babies weren’t as strong but I think there’s been such an advancement in the quality of formula nowadays and also we know now that they can’t just have cows milk, so not breastfeeding isn’t the issue it once was. You’re looking lovely as always ❤

I breastfed my firstborn but had inverted nipples and had to use nipple shields. It was frustrating. Engorgement, cracking and bleeding nipples were the pits along with a colicky baby. But we made it through it. My second born wasn’t able to be breastfed unfortunately as hard as I tried my milk was just bad. Formula it was. You’re such an inspiration to so many ❤

Harlow is adorable! 🩷 She speaks very well!! My experience after my first (23 years ago) I tried and was miserable breast feeding. She would want to feed and i would cry as my nipples hurt and bleeding. It was not a good experince. Oh and the cream they gave you back then was this sticky hard cream that hurt as much to put on as the actual breastfeeding. So for me I decided it just wasnt for me. I also had to have a c-section so there was a lot going on. So having my next two children I chose not to even try. But, funny story when I went for my pre-op to have my son....the nurse asked me if i intended on breast feeding and I told her no...and she literally said "oh you look like someone who would breast feed"....😂 I'm not even sure what that meant. Anyways, to all those Momma's struggling...do what is best. I now have all adult children and they have all been healthy!!!! 🩷🩷🩷 Great video Kristen. Love your perspecive and honesty always!!!

Yes yes yes! When nursing it is so important to nurse on demand day and night, ideally until one year if possible (physically and mentally). I got told so much to do eat play sleep, 2-3 hours in between nursing, baby isn’t possibly hungry, etc. It made me crazy with worry that something was wrong with my babe/me for not producing enough. I eventually stopped listening to all that noise and nursed round the clock. Still do a year and a half in. Felt so much better after starting that. Plus nursing in carriers saved my skin when I wanted to get out of the house lol.

Thank you for sharing your story. There are a lot of factors that can affect your breastfeeding journey. I struggled with nursing my first. Hiring a lactation consultant was the best thing I did and I wish I had done it sooner. Afterward, I learned a lot that I wish I knew before. I agree that supplements don’t help with much. But they can help with specific issues like I’d your supply drops when your period comes back. The best thing to do is learn as much as possible, be open to tweaks, and give yourself grace.

So so good to hear that your experience was better the second time around. I had my daughter 5 months after you had Harlow, and while we breastfed until she was 11 months, it was a weak limp to the finish line lol. I think she ended up weaning herself bc my supply was so low. I’m really excited to try again with better knowledge and experience if we have another baby.

Great video! One thing I will say to a first time mom who wants to breastfeed is to please see a lactation CONSULTANT . They are so helpful and will tell you all of the things you need to know to be successful at breastfeeding. Most hospitals have one who checks in on you but after you leave the hospital, it is up to you to follow up with them anytime you need help.

My bio sister had inverted nipples which made it very hard for her to breastfeed her children. That's why having that consultation with the lactation nurse in the hospital is so important, especially for first-time moms. If your baby is colicky, it's good to keep a food journal of what you're eating, then checking to see if your baby is having more issues when you eat or drink certain things. My oldest son couldn't handle when I ate shellfish. He was miserable. Neither of my boys could handle when I had broccoli. I don't know if hospitals still give nursing moms a tube of lanolin nipple ointment, but if they do, it's very helpful the first few weeks. You just have to wipe it off with a warm cloth before nursing. I'll never forget the day I left the hospital with my oldest son. My milk came in early and my nursing bra was killing me. We went straight to a maternity shop for me to get fitted for a new bra, and it was embarrassing. I was literally dripping milk all over the fitting room and soaking the bras I was trying on. I apologized to the lady helping me and she was so nice! I was in tears. She explained that they wash the "try on" bras all the time because mothers leak.

Unfortunately In Canada and USA you don't necessarily learn this but birth traumas in infants is a huge thing. Which includes feeding problems, bonding issues and emotional issues too. It is worth looking into because it can lead to behavior problems later when your child is older.

I was never able to breastfeed my first two. I had my third cesarean, third baby, in June of this year. She was our 4 lb premie and latched immediately. I had so many women praying for us, my first and last baby I've been able to exclusively breastfeed. My first two were bottle fed. I'm happy to be able to EB, and I try to remind myself that it's a blessing to be able to do it. With my first daughter when I had to give up pumping and switch to formula I felt like an absolute failure, i cried and just promised I would get strong for my babies and get healthy. In my case breastfeeding does not help with weight loss but hinders it, so this leads to so many problems with my cesareans, "because of my weight", as my last OB put it. I want to have more babies, but I have what's called uterus didelphys, two uteruses, two cervix, both uteruses are half the size of a normal woman's uterus so I'm at a heightened risk for uterine rupture. A common misconception is that cesarean delays milk production for ALL cesarean mothers, which isn't true at all. My first was an emergency cesarean and I was leaking and soaking the bed while still pregnant at 30 weeks, 33 weeks was delivery. My son had an extreme posterior tongue tie and lip tie, he wouldn't latch at all! When I asked a NICU nurse if i could try breastfeeding him especially since he was so little, she told me no because I might DROWN him, so I was scared away from feeding my son. (I got double mastitis after this). My second pregnancy after I had my daughter my milk came in again (2nd cesarean), but I was severely depressed. I didn't want to breastfeed, I failed my depression screening in the hospital, the nurses were trying to push me to feed and it felt very forced, I got through it for the first couple of months, but before my cesarean I had even told my husband, "If something happens to me on the table during the cesarean, do i even fight to come back?". I had lost my grandfather, who raised me, at 23 weeks due to covid and pneumonia. It was very sudden and unexpected. We tried formula with my most recent, she has a heart issue, and its so hard on her stomach besides gentle-ease. I've never had problems producing, I usually over-produce BUT my doctor once mentioned they think it's a hormone imbalance with my pituitary gland. If you are trying everything, one last thing to check is your hormone balance! This could help some mama, so if you can I would recommend it! My doctor ended up giving me a random injection for it, no idea what it was. But I was 17, naive, and thought "this doctor knows what's best for me, why not", he also said I didn't have pre-eclampsia. Ended up in the OR at 33 weeks with magnesium and a BP of 195/190.

I agree there's going to be cracking. It hurts, until you body get used to nursing. I didn't use the silver cups. The over the counter ointment didn't help either. I used moist Lipton tea bags x 5 mins on each nipple after every feeding. I kept them in a ziploc bag for daily use. I'd change them every other day. It healed me so fast. It was an Eastern homeopathic tip I got from an Asian patient of mine. It was a life saver imho. My daughter fortunately latched right away. Breast feeding made my boobs lop sided. Even though I changed sides during feeding. She definitely preferred one book over the other.

I breastfed my daughter for 7 months (wanted to go waaay longer) but had to supplement from day one. It absolutely broke my heart. But I just couldn’t produce enough. I was eating super healthy and drinking a ton of water everyday! I was even eating a ton of lactation snacks. I even got on a prescription medication to help increase my production! But none of it helped.. I tried to even pump constantly when I wasn’t breastfeeding but for some reason I couldn’t even get a DROP from pumping. Tried a couple different pumps too. I could only get milk when she was feeding from me directly but it would stop and she would still be hungry so had to use formula.. around 7 months I completely dried up! I was SO heartbroken! I miss it everyday.. I pray so hard that my next baby (IF I’m able to have one🤞🏻) I will be able to breastfeed fully for a long time! It’s hard being a mama! You’re amazing Kristen 💕

I wish I had this video 20 years ago 😢 I was 20 when I had my daughter and had no knowledge of anything. Nurses just made me feel like something was wrong with me because I couldn't or didn't know how to breast feed my child

Your realness is the best there is not enough moms willing to be like that and I appreciate it so much! Just wondering if you think that maybe your babes have any food intolerance that are making them colicy? My baby boy was super colicy the first two weeks until he had a little diaper rash and his doctor said he was dairy intolerant and after eliminating dairy he was a dream! Just throwing it out there! Love your channel🤍

Thank you ❤❤❤ I agree that there should be more real content that shows everything in between the good/east and the difficult. I’ve considered the allergies but I don’t even really eat dairy?! So I have no clue!! I’ve been taking probiotics for nursing moms and stuff to help too. Seems like our babies just have sensitive guts. Like Nick and I 😢

The great thing about bottle feeding you can eat and do what you wanted. More freedom. I wish I stopped earlier

Kristen! You’re doing amazing! Also, have you heard of baby probiotics? A lot of people have had success and it seems to be a cure for their colicky babies. When my baby went through a bad tummy phase and had a lot of gas, we gave her probiotics and that seemed to help. Hope it helps!

I’m so here for this. How my mom breast fed 11 of us. I’ll never know. My daughter wouldn’t latch to anyone or anything i I had to wear nipple shields ( like a top of a bottle. ) she was fine. No soreness at all. And it’s all she would use Gas is really bad for babies what we eat , goes right thru. Greens beans veggies. Gas for them. I moved her leggs to chest up and down , also would place hands on side of tummy and move it around it circle When I did formula. She cried. I changed to nursoy and she was fine. She’s lactos intolerant now. Who knew ?. Ha ha. If you always feed him won’t he Not learn to settle on his own if you always feed him ?! Hang tough. You got this. Remember you can’t do any wrong

I have had 4 kids and with all of them i tried breastfeeding and never got to produced enough milk with pump and suplements. Its true that some women dont produce enough milk.i gave them formula but still gave them whatever milk i would produce to give them antibodies and all the good stuff

@@KristenxLeanne it’s seriously amazing, talks everything from how the formula corporations in the us breaks the WHO code of marketing which lowers breastfeeding rates. (There actually not allowed to market, or give gifts to new and expecting mothers) Also hospital policies that affected breastfeeding rates, to in history of the societal view of breastfeeding (that it was only for the poor and uneducated, even doctors told women formula was superior)

I did everything to produce more milk and it never worked. I did so much pumping that i had an issue with blood flow to my nipple. It was so painful! I was heartbroken but i realized my son actually did better on formula. Less spit up and he was more full. I was so upset but once i dried up my milk i realized it was all hormones making me so upset. Lol

Do you use something to collect on the other side while you’re nursing?? That was the biggest annoyance that I found about nursing is my haaka had to always be clean and I kind of hated just have both my boobs hanging out all the time but I literally had to! My daughter only nursed one side and I’d collect like 6oz on the other while she nursed but it was super annoying to always NEED that.

I actually never collect from the other side when I'm nursing currently. At nigt, can't be bothered, too tired but during the day, I thought about trying the haaka... but my baby is so big I don't even know where to put it, even if it is sideways. Wow 6oz?! I'm gonna try that today. I switch him to the other side when he's done, but it would be nice not to lol

A fed baby is a happy baby no shame in using formula nowadays it seems ppl are forced to continue trying until the baby is almost starving or starving not worth the risk and stress.
