I have a very rare, J.P. Cochrane & Co. Special Mammoth Niblick, which I believe is worth a few thousand, it has some surface rust and I wondered if i should be using wire wool or not.

Wow that's quite a find! Will you attempt to extend the shaft to restore it to original length? Or would that detract from the value?

it's actually very long as is ....so I might just smooth over the existing end of the shaft...
