Will it PROTECT my iPhone 11? Drop-Tested! - Pela Case Review

So the Pelacase is compostable. Made from this material called Flaxstic. Now Pela touts the Pelacase as being better for the environment as it’s partially made from renewable resources and as I said a few seconds ago, because it’s compostable.
All that sounds “woke” BUT the question I have as a reviewer is: Will it protect my iPhone?
Because at the end of the day, I’m guessing that replacing a broken OLED screen outweighs any sort of environmental benefit a compostable case might have.

Design
When it comes to design, the Pelacase isn’t great. It’s of average width and is thin which is usually a good feature but the lack of edge protection, coupled with it’s extremely loose edges is a bad combination.
The Pelacase won’t slide around easily on the back or front and the case won’t show excessive usage. The texture of the Flaxstic material is decent as it has a rubbery feel to it but doesn’t have the pocket pulling power of something like the Apple Silicone case.
Flaxstic, according to Pela, is a material that’s made from a combination of bioplastic elastomer and flax straw materials. About 45% of the case is made from renewable resources which is cool but the other 55% is not.
I’m guessing that other 55% is made from plastic that are chemically processed to have weaker links between the long-chain polymers to help them breakdown via natural processes. So basically, ½ the case is still some form of plastic while the other ½ isn’t.
Now I said at the beginning of the video that this case ~might be compostable. If you run your own compost then it should work out for you BUT in the city that I live in, Calgary, we’re not allowed to put compostable plastics into our compost because the composting facility can’t break it down fast enough.
So my guess was that the hole in the ground was going to be the next best thing. As per my environmental scientist friends. BUT Pelacase did a comment on instagram saying that it needed some sort of culture to compost and I replied how do I do this and all I got was crickets.
I know, I know, the current website specifically says home composting but if I don’t compost at home because my city does it, does that mean I throw out the Pelacase?. But fun fact, the old Pelacase website said the product was biodegradable.
The last thing I’ll mention for the design of the Pelacase is that it’s a color sink. This case started off as an off-white case and is now a gross-looking off-white case.

Functionality
When it comes to accessing your iPhone in the Pelacse, I generally didn’t have any issues getting to the device. The buttons are a little tougher than I like, the mute switch cutout is large enough, the cutouts at the bottom are large enough for any sized head and the camera works like if there was no case. Qi-charging works fine through the Flaxstic as well.
The only thing I don’t like about the Pelecase is when I’m using it with one hand. With the larger devices, I tend to prop up the device with my pinky and the cutouts at the bottom of the case are quite sharp.
Protection
When it comes to protection, the Pelacase isn’t drop-rated to any certification but the website says it can handle bumps and drops and to read all the reviews about how protective it is.
But back to the question at the beginning of the video, Will it protect my iPhone?
From normal corner drops from waist height, the Pelacase will be fine. But from face first drops? We're not so sure. With the low edges and pliable corners, the Pela case isn't going to offer much protection for the screen. And let's be honest, your iPhone needs to have a bit of protection for it's screen because it's the thing you use to most on that device.
I like the idea behind the Pela case but it needs to be better. The entire case needs to be a bit more rigid.

It says they only pay for repairs for the screen which is great- if the screen is the only thing that breaks in a fall. It's a bigger issue if the hardware behind the screen is also damaged. Not sure if I could risk that.

Interesting. I have a Pela case. I love it. The company has been great. I ordered the wrong size accidentally the first time, and they responded right away and sent me a new case. It fits my phone great, and I’ve dropped it several times while walking and no issues. I love my Pela case.

Emily Stocking i have a pela case and to be honest I didn’t like it as much. Like the video showed, the edges are too loose (for my iphone xs max). It comes right off easily. I had a pela case on my iphone 7 too and I was so disappointed because I dropped it on a pavement one day and the upper corner of the phone was dented by a stone which apparently penetrated into the case! :(

I have found that no matter what type of case I have whether it be an Otterbox, speck or apple case that my screen WILL crack if I drop it face first and do not have a screen protector.

Right so my case just arrived and it fell many times from pretty high and it’s survived.i thought it would be loose but it’s pretty tight and the corners don’t come off that easily.also after 5-6 corner drops nothing happened to it,it didn’t split and didn’t even scuff.i do t know what is going on with this video.but I am really satisfied with my case and it’s way way way better than I though it would be.i watched this video maybe 7 times before buying it and turns out it’s a really nice case

PELA has a screen protection guarantee... Per their website: "If your screen cracks while wearing a Pela Case (excluding Slim) AND our liquid screen protector, we'll pay for the repairs." Pretty sure if you buy an Apple Silicone Case, they don't offer that guarantee even though they are the ones making the phones they are trying to protect! Regardless of whether PELA is 100% sustainable or whether the real issue is the materials used to make the iphone... the point is that any step we can take to sustainability is important and PELA offers just that. And... if you have a Pela case and their screen protector, then you are good to go should your screen breaks! However, if you have a PELA case and a screen protector, there is no reason your screen will crack unless you drop it out of a window. A case doesn't offer enough protection for iPhones, no matter what case you have... you also NEED a screen protector to protect your screen from cracking in addition to whatever case you choose (unless you have a Lifeproof case which also covers the screen). MobileReviewsEh neglects to include that important fact!

I’ve been having this case for over 2 years on my iPhone 8, I dropped soo many and my phone never shredded. The case is not sharp, the corner never splits. It does get stained easily , true. But honestly i am very happy with my case. Also I got the liquid protectors and they are covering the cost of the repair of the screen if gets broken. They have a great costumer service, I emailed them last week, because the liquid protector became jelly in the jar and the sent me a new one this morning .

omg i just watched that pela ad 2:00 and the thing that bothers me is that she drops the case from 20 feet, but then when the guy goes to pick it up they don’t show the back of the case (which is the side of the phone that actually hit the ground) 🙄

Thunderfoot just made a video on the Pela case and if you send him a sample of yours it can told you exactly which plastic it is! (Check the video from around 18:20 to 19:00 min to see the relevant part). He is also interesting in testing similar 'biodegradable' cases that you may have. I think that could be an interesting test and maybe result in a little colab?

Worms are good composters, but you need a lot of them to make their way through the material. And it's weird to me, but my pela case has always protected my phone and I drop it a lot. It has a large lip over the edge of my phone, so it hugs well. Not super tight, but I think over time with heat, it has tightened up a bit. And even if it lands flat, the ground doesn't touch the screen.

Yeah I bought one and I was pretty disappointed with how loose the fit was. I love the texture but the fit just wasn’t good and felt like I’d pull it off any time I pulled it out of my pocket. And I didn’t think about how little impact this case probably has environmentally. I do think the idea is great but the execution is definitely questionable...

I got my Pela Case for over a Year. I dropped my iPhone X very often. Nothings ever happened. Okay the colour of the case goes smudged, but that can happen with every other case. Plastic at itself was bio degradable until the Industry decided to put Mineral Oil in the Receipt. And this is why we have a big Problem nowadays with Plastic, that does not rott.

Hey Aaron, are there any full leather cases you recommend for the iPhone 11 since Apple doesn’t make leather cases for the base iPhone 11? Also, how does the nomad leather case stack up against the mous contour?

My Nomad cases haven't shown up yet. BUT the Nomad is only a dual layered case (TPU/PC) with leather and the Contour is triple layered (TPE,TPU/PC) with leather which means the Contour is going to be tougher.

Glad I saw this video before purchasing a Pela. I'm a dropper; one time I broke my iPhone 5 screen twice in 6 months due to shitty cases and general clumsiness. Their customer service is absolutely the worst. Rather than fixing my issue where the website said it was free shipping and then they charged me was where it all started for me. They refused to refund the shipping, then after going round and round with them I told them I wanted to return the item because I couldn’t see advertising for them when they stand for such poor service they wanted me to mail it back to them (I have to pay for shipping it back) then I would also have to pay a $3 re stocking fee which I don’t see noted ANYWHERE on their website... so... ultimately, my iPods air Pela case is currently rotting in my back yard... we will see how long that takes.

Hey Aaron another great review this company is doing a ton of advertising and are hounding me big time. I was maybe thinking of getting this case something a little different I thought but wow what a piece of 💩 thanks for saving me some hard working money. You gotta do the Tethys screen protector. Almost 4500 reviews on Amazon and 4.5 stars. But $7 for 3? It has very little in the way of recognition outside of amazon. Sounds like it needs to get tested to get exposed or praised!

Interesting concept, looks like a decent case regardless of the environmental aspect, and for my older phone (Pixel 3a) it's discounted to the point that it costs about the same as a nice case off Amazon. I like the speckly look of it. I would probably get a darker color so I'm not really worried about staining. Has anyone tried and can confirm if the adhesive on a Popsocket will stick securely to this Flaxstic stuff?

This is very late since your comment is nearly a year old, but I can confirm: no. Adhesive does not stick. I bought a slide-on PopSocket instead.
