Will it run? 80s Volkswagen first start after 10 years of sitting

In this episode my friends and I fetch another Volkswagen. It is a 1980 Volkswagen Jetta Mk1 powered by a 1.3L. It is stored in an abandoned hangar under a layer of dust. We're planning on getting it running for the first time in 10 years and driving her home while we're at it.

Weld new metal into the Jetta and keep the Golf shell and build that up, I wouldn’t cut the Golf to save the Jetta, save both

agreed. that is one of the easiest spots on the car to fab a replacement piece for.. hardest part is cleaning off the tarry rubber goop stuff before welding the patch on

Late to the party, but AWWWWWW fond memories..... my first ever car was a 1980 VDub Jetta...... Loved that car, unfortunately, the front strut domes didn't take the Yellow Koni's I put in very well and after 4 year the car was too far damaged to fix it :(.... Great content mate, I enjoy it a lot, you won yourself a sub!!

Wow! I didn't know this car existed in Europe, here in Brazil It's called Voyage (Argentina: Gacel, U.S.: Fox), assembled by Ford. I had one year 89, 1.6L Ford engine. Really good engine, reliable and economic. You can take this one on daily use, You'll never be left on the street.

Would love to see how you sort out and set up the carburettor. My 1.3 1983 golf is leaking fuel from the rubber mount and heat shield. Can’t seem to seal it..! Great purchase guys. Oh and maybe general servicing, tube up, adjust tappets etc. 👍

I so NEARLY bought a 36 year old VW Polo MK2 Breadvan the other week that has sat for 22 years. I was gutted I missed out. I really wanted to save it and restore it as underneath the dirt and blown tires it was so clearly solid. I was gutted :(

Oh, and it was a Formel E, built to be more economical than the other models. Had a 3+E gearbox, an MPG dial and LED indicator where the coolant gauge usually lives (this was moved) and a whopping extra 6bhp and 4lb/ft of torque over the factory 1.1L. I hope it went to a good home!

Love this jetta! Great color and interior! I would love to see the rust repaired and get some really nice wheels and a European spin on an engine swap! Or maybe you could even turbo that little 1.3 considering its carbureted it should be much easier.

Elias is repairing the rust as we speak! For now, he's keeping the stock engine because he wants a car that he can enjoy without having to do a ton of work on it.

i've never seen an Jetta of this decade... In my country we only have the VW Santana and VW Voyage. The Voyage is very similar to this Jetta, but the engine is most commonly placed in longitudinal position

The paint oxidized by itself after some years,even if its indoor and untreated..the air oxygen is enough to start rusting metal parts.

What's the law like with driving a car back? in the UK, you can't drive on the road without MOT, tax or insurance unless you've got dealer plates which you can't get unless you have a registered trade business

In Belgium if you already have another car with valid tax and insurrance you can just take your numberplates and put them on the "new" car. You have to call the insurancs and ask for permission.99% its no problem unless you buy a ferrari lol. Only MOT is a problem here. There is a law that every car that you want to sell needs to have MOT inspection first.

6:40 - it is really pitty you are not using fogging oil while attempting to start these dry as a desert pistons inside - you know you make a lot of damage. Unless this car is supposed to be a mere short term project and hit the scrape yard very soon anyway it is really not the way you should do it. If you want you can have a look at M539Restorations (to be found on YT) - he is ALWAYS using the fogging oil on dry engines - and believe me - he knows what he is doing.... 10:10 - 11:34 - what kind of registration plates did you put on the car? is this some special kind for cars with no current inspection?
