Will it Run and Drive After 34 Years? | 1956 Chevrolet Sport Coupe

This classic chevy, a 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air sport coupe, was given a cosmetic restoration to drivers quality in Mississippi in 1986-1987 and was very well preserved indoor in storage from 1988 and was never driven since. The only thing done before this video was filling air in some tires and hosed it down so it was possible to see out the windows when towing. In todays standards when i comes to restorations, this is a restoration project, but a good one. The first step is to see if the engine fires, and the driveline work. Will it run and drive?..
This is not a how to video. Some of the car repairs are temporary and are not considered as a restoration.

I swear, those Corvette rally wheels look fantastic on every Chevy ever made. They just fit everything like a glove. There was a '48 fleet line in my neighborhood when I was a kid, just a low dollar regular Joe daily driver and the Vette wheels gave it the perfect stance.

Agree to disagree I'm more in line with period correct Wheels on a 50s car rally rims be long on any car after the wheel was first released just me I've had plenty of 55s and 56s

@@justdale1966 I'm totally ok with that. I used to like radically altered cars but lately I agree with Jay Leno. Stock is pretty damn cool. Especially now that all of them are getting scarce. Wheels are easy to change and change back, so you could conceivably have 2 or 3 different sets of tires and wheels that you could change, depending on your mood. Kind of like a closet with a whole bunch of different style shirts.

You know I sold I don't know how many of those Corvette rims. I should put Corvette rally in parentheses. Because none of them came off of Corvette. About 1976 El Camino for example and other cars. I'm just sharing because as soon as you stick the word Corvette in the description price goes up. If anybody out there wants to buy these rims they can be had for a better price. I made a deal on a van and had Riley rims on it they were to pick up style naturally. But you're right probably rims make action by any GM full size car look great

For those of you running the old Chevy 235 six cylinder, make sure you have oil getting to the top end. That was a common fault in these otherwise extremely rugged engines. If the oil wasn't changed regularly, the oil would stop making it to the top end, leading toward all kinds of increasingly serious problems. If you catch it in time, with a properly-sized wooden dowel, one can prime and hammer oil down through the head bolt hole that brings the oil to the top end. That will clear the oil pathway. The oil in these engines is pumped through the crank shaft, and then up through the side of a middle head bolt, into the rocker assembly. I rebuilt one of these engines from a 1954 Chevy pickup. To spec the idle is set at 450rpm. I wish I never sold my Chevy, or, the matching '54 Chevy ton-and-a-half dump truck I owned. But then, at 73, I've owned lots of nice cars and trucks that I wish I never sold. This car in this video is beautiful to see. That's the original BelAir two-tone paint scheme. It's lovely to see.

Of course it will run, it's a stove bolt bulletproof six. I had a '54 when stationed in Colorado in '67-'68 & was very reliable. Drove it numerous times back home to Detroit & never had a problem. One of my Army buddies had a '56 he bought in Palmdale Calif, pulled out the six after driving it to Colorado, dropped a '64 Vette 327, 365 hp, T10 4-speed trans & 3.55 posi rear end drivetrain from a bone yard in Pueblo dirt cheap. The yard guy said it had a bad rod knock. The only problem was one of the bearing caps was loose and need to be torqued. My buddy then tricked it with headers, 2- Holley 4 barrels, Edelbrock hi-rise intake and a Chet Herbert roller cam. He left the rust-free body in the original patina condition. What a beast. Great times & memories.

I never cared for 235s, but anymore seeing a survivor that still has one is a treat. Especially if it’s a hardtop Bel Air. They’re not exactly unicorns, but still unusual. Not powerful, but if I’m just going cruising, I don’t care.

Congratulations! Your dad would be proud! I love my old Chevy's! I had a 'souped up' 1956 Chevy back in 1971, and to me it's the 'prettiest' of those 1955 through 1957 classics. The car has a great body on it and if the frame is solid with no rust, this is a fantastic car to have or sell. How many miles on the car? DAMN, I would LOVE to have this '56!!

Great how you took the time to make sure no bent valves on the 235. I've scrapped two 235s in the past that were running along with a 216. Wish I didn't do that, they were good engines.
@CAROLDDISCOVER-FINDER2525
@CAROLDDISCOVER-FINDER2525 Жыл бұрын
I still have a half a dozen 235s that my dad checked in the barn. Oh they're on a rack that he built and they were lube down probably could stick them in a car and get him to where they run again. Also have couple of 216 and 235 Babbitt engines. But I used to take them away by the trailer loads to the salvage yard and get it bound up money to pay for my gas back then for them. I did pretty well holy nose straight sixes out including that crappy 2:30 engine they had and the 250 which is a great engine as well. I would stick small block Chevys in them. You can buy 6 cylinder car best phone block in it and raise the value. My dad would just shake his head every time I yanked one of those sixes out. About 10 or 12 years ago the market was really hot for those 235 engines just stick in the early 50s and before Chevy trucks. They were replacing the Babbitt engines or something that looked somewhat period correct. Now I go buy an old truck old car and they may want $1,500 for it. If it has a 6-cylinder and it especially at 235 and I don't want it though take the inch out themselves without doing a butcher job and knock $500 off the price! That's like one third to one/5 the cost. I did a little research there's a strong market for them. If I'd only kept those trailer loads of mostly 2:35s dollar sign dollar sign dollar sign! And the worst thing is I now have an appreciation for the sound of those motors especially in front of a standard three or four speed. So I've come full circle just about

@@CAROLDDISCOVER-FINDER2525 -- Sad!! The Chevy 235 is my favorite engine of all time. It always made me sad when people swapped these engines for a small block V8. Hard to kill the GM inline 6 . They would run forever . My uncle had a 55 & after yrs in a barn I asked him if it still ran.. He said , it burned oil so bad I parked it 27 yrs earlier... With compression between 30 & 50 psi , I had it running within an hour . It showed 47k on the odometer & uncle said it rolled over at least once... It smoked horribly.. But it still started .. I think it had 147k on the motor & thats phenominal for a motor in 1955.. I bought it & dropped a 327 in it with a 4 speed on the floor.. Like most of my cars from the 50's & 60's , I wish I had stored them away... I think of the money they bring nowadays .. Ooofta .

Nice... Simple Maintenance, little wash, maybe buff later on down the road, that old paint should shine, just don't overdo it on edges.
