Hydraulic trailer brake unit are not as adjustable for power output as the newer models. The 2 units under the hood are variable resistors used to lower output voltage from the brake unit so the brakes on smaller trailers do not just lock up as soon as you step on the brakes. I have not seen one of those units in use since the 80's.

I'm a Mopar guy, but honestly, the best truck this family ever had was a 1983 C10 longbed with the 250 6, in custom deluxe trim. We got it from a local library that closed in 1997, with just 44k on it for $2k. Strangely optioned, it had the new for 83 wide ratio 700 R4, full gauges, am/fm dual speaker, p/s, manual brakes, (frt disc) 3/4 ton rear springs, factory light duty towing package with 5 pin harness and step bumper, and factory oversized towing mirrors. No carpet, standard bench seat. When we got it, it needed complete exhaust, full ign tune up, all the vac lines ( there were a LOT of them) and a carb rebuild. It had just got a new fuel tank and sender before we bought it.. To this day, it's the only Chevy of that vintage that I've ever seen the fuel gauge work and not bounce around. Body, paint and frame, super. No rust.. Floors? Gone. We replaced them. Found out the windshield was leaking behind the dash.. Just a great truck after all that was done. Damned thing started in subzero weather every time, 1 pump and turn key. Mom hated the thing, and after dad passed in 03, she sold it for... $700...I miss that old gal and would love to have another!
