Oh, the memories! I purchased one of those brand new in the 1980's for my kids to push a 12' aluminium (aluminum) dinghy around on the harbour (harbor) :). They had so much fun - the big thing to remember was to open the air vent on the fuel cap - or you would stop unexpectedly. Starting it was fun - as you pointed out - it is a direct drive so when it started you were underway. The kids soon learnt to push off from the beach, bow first, hop aboard and start her up.

The white deposits on the lower gearbox says it was salt water used. On all older outboards I recommend at least a look at the water pump impeller. It may be pumping now but it may be minutes from coming apart. New gear oil is cheap insurance.

I think the gas cap has a breather that needs to be unscrewed to prevent a vacuum in the tank. It’s screwed back in so the tank doesn’t leak when it’s moved.
@billydarley69254 жыл бұрын
they did this on my 88 fourtrax. says on/off but theres a petcock below the tank and it doesnt lock the gas cap so my conclusion was leak prevention if the float needle fails to stop the flow. my honda harmony 215 has a throttle actuated fuel shut off valve.

Wow, ‘88 FourTrax! I got an ‘86 250cc in ‘89 as an 11yr old & it changed my life. I’d pull my Coleman Scanoe (w Minn-Kota) on a trailer (with the 250) with my buddy on the back to any pond/lake/river that we could get to, to fish and explore. I felt that I had life figured out!...except for the ON/OFF Selector of the Fuel Cap. 30 years later I realize what it was meant for from a fellow Mustie1 fan. The 250 is still at my folk’s farm under a shed roof of their main stable. I want to restore it. I need to restore it. I HAVE to restore it, as I still have the Scanoe & Trailer at my home, so: HONDAs make me happy. It’s no surprise that Mustie’s “stolen” outboard fires right up & pumped water above a spinning prop.

Wow - 30 bucks, what a score. I bet if they used it as a dingy motor on a sail boat its one that can lay on its side (yep, confirmed by the extensions on the plastic opposite the handle). The red Karmann Ghia brought back some great memories for me. It was my first car. Bought it in N.J. and drove it to Florida. When I went to install a new radio Inside the fuse box, all I could find was 6 volts. 1966 was the last year they did that. So, the radio ran off of a little 12 volt Ni-Cad battery. It worked real well! Using 6 volts in Florida was no big deal, because it never gets below 40 degrees. I sure loved that car.

Great video as always. Quick tip you can tape or tie with some string, some heavy plastic, like a piece of old tarp, down the side of the shaft where the water outlet/exhaust is, then just leave it drape down over the water outlet into the bucket, it stops the water from going everywhere and recycles it back into the one bucket. You can get away with using duck tape to make a little redirect for the water/exhaust outlet.

@TurboDieselFury4 жыл бұрын
I have the same one. Came off a bumper boat ride...mint still had the plastic film on the stickers. I believe it is 2 hp, there is a restriction plate under the carb that might give you more power if you remove it. That is a sight glass and it is for the oil. Change the drive pin in the prop with one that will break easily and it will save your prop one day (learned that one the hard way). I replaced the kill switch with a toggle switch because you have to hold the original switch until the motor completely stops or it will light up again and you'll crash into something! Water pump might need to be replaced, engine is not water cooled just the exhaust leg. Gas cap has a vent you need to unscrew to let air in. I always run gas with a bit of two cycle oil in mine. You scored on this motor.

actually mustie they also use anodes in fresh water as well. The trim tab, which is also a zinc anode, is used to compensate for prop walk and prop torque. That helps negate load on the steering, to make the motor easier to steer -- otherwise, the motor may prefer port to starboard or vice versa. 3C8602171 is the current part number. It attaches with a stainless bolt. Anodes are sacrificial, and always a good idea to reduce corrosion of other metals immersed in water. Yes, salt water is much more reactive, but we see a lot of corrosion in the Great Lakes as well. Particularly if you have a battery aboard, or have a metal boat, anodes are a must.

Never nothing wrong with overfilling a unknown OB motor. Will get a nice flush,,then drain and inspect. The "tightness" can also be the bottom end. A rubber tipped?? water pump impeller there somewere usually. Those rot apart after sitting and turn to dust when they are cranked to life again. (if the motor turns over,,the WP impeller does also,,when water cooled). damn impellers are the same price as the find. Carb has had alcohol gas thru it sometime in its life.. The white crusties inside have to go or no play well on the average. Neat find. Congrats.

I like being one of mustie1's little helpers.... even though, I can't hold a flashlight, or a wrench... or tell him when the oil meets the line. Thanks, buddy.

Man I want to go there. How are you guys holding up with all the anti-gun crap shoved down your throat? Were the hunters really supporting the confiscation? They will be coming for your shotties next.

@@ocavant Shit is hitting the fan. A crim walked into a police station up nth in Parmerston Nth and walked out with 14 or 15 handed in firearms lol. Plus taxpayers are going to be coughing up with buy back for years & years.. Millions & Millions. Alot of hunters are not happy at all but if your a proper hunter/ stalker you only need one shot. Pest cullers should be able to have large mags. Only rim fire .22 are allowed 10 shot mags. 5 shot mag in 12 gauge etc. Bed here if you need one...

About 10 years ago we were fishing in the GWN, and one of the guys with us went to pull anchor and it was real hard pulling up. well it took 3 of us to pull it out and there was a 12 foot boat attached to it. On the back end was a small Honda like that one. We pulled it on shore dumped the water out of the boat and it floated. So we pulled the whole thing back to the lodge that was painted on the side of the boat. The lodge owner said that boat had gone missing a bunch of years before, and he turned it in to the ins company. Said you want it take it,, we brought it back to the lower 48, the boat was in good shape,, and as far as I know as I know after tear down cleaning it is still running today,, Honda motors are damn near bullett proof
