I put a reefer engine in my 8x8 Argo. It's the Yanmar variety. Over 16000 hours on the engine, no problems at all, and that's low for a reefer. They don't run under any significant load. You don't need 20 horse to run a reefer. They are sized for heating in the winter for things that can't be frozen.
@HorsepowerHeadquarters4544 жыл бұрын
I wonder if the crankcase pressure was the reason for the knock it (other than not running) seemed like it ran good after launching the dipstick, 🌋 Imagine the engines you could swap with that old dragline!🤣 combines etc. Love the scrap yard I worked at one for a few years torchn and cutoff saw. Bought an old 16kw onan marine genset with a kubota 4 cylinder diesel from one of the local yards for $50. Gave it a new electric fuel pump, primed it and started right up. I couldn't believe someone would scrap the damn thing. The generator head even makes power. Ripped out the sea water heat exchanger, threw in a radiator and some electric fans and I use it to power my house when the power goes out. I only used the glow plugs 1 time in the 20 or so times I started it, and I didn't even need em even in 20 degree temps. It's amazing what people get rid of. Used to see a ton of water-cooled gas 3 cylinder kubotas in carpet cleaning/pressure washing vans at local LKQ u-pull-it junkyards. Shitty part is they price them the same as car engines. I couldn't make the idiot at the counter understand they're basically lawn equipment/utility engines. Finally I gave up and i'm pretty sure they all got crushed. They could have got $200 out of me for one but they chose $10 in scrap instead. Not my property I guess, but still a waste..

Not sure how prevalent they are up north, but in the states the old Thermo-King reefer units were powered by little Isuzu D201 diesels. They had some funkiness about the crankshaft flanges that require modification if you'd like to use a normal vehicle transmission. Not that you'd want to put it in much that would go on the road as they were only like 40 or 50hp tops and were set up for steady state. So, you could get a big electric motor and a ThermoKing motor, some batteries and rig up your own little diesel electric power plant in an old Canada Post LLV mail van. Perfect little 60mpg grocery getter.
