Simon Dumais almost positive it’s a 300series jd motor in that 70d. The 70 and 70d both use the same motor. And a lot of the same parts. The 70d is a pilot operated hydraulic setup. The 70 is a manual valve body type. But both used the 300 series jd. Great motor.

I'm a Deere construction parts guy. Deere and Hitachi share a parts warehousing system in North America, so if you go to a yellow or an orange dealer their availability for parts will be the same unless it's on the shelf. If it's 1997 or later (after Deere went away from the 490/690/790/892 model numbers) availability on parts and the quality of the documentation is pretty good. Lots of farmers have auction special 892ELCs laying around for the twice a year they need to dig a hole or clean a corral. If this engine plate is pre-1997 or so they won't typically have serial number option codes to break out the engine build sheet. It's not so bad if you have a machine model or serial number, but on stationary engines you're guessing unless the tag of the build is still on the valve cover. With an excavator you're kind of at the mercy of how complete the slapped-together parts books were on the earlier Deere-Hitachi stuff. If it's a 4276 engine, that's pre-metric so 1992 or earlier. Going off the casting number for the pump housing and block should lead you to where you are going. These water pumps aren't sold assembled (I believe that changed in the mid-1990s) so you have to press in a shaft/impeller, and the new castings for the water pump housing are a four digit price but still available. The thing worse than this is the one year wonder 1986-1987 John Deere 50 which was built by Yanmar and has no North American equivalent. Especially when the serial number in the system maps to a 1999 which was Hitachi built and the new kid tells the guy that all of the final drive stuff is available still...

My dad saved a 86 John Deere 444D loader from the scrap pile. Company was ready to scrap it, so he paid them scrap price to deliver it to our farm. Its well used but reliable, only had to replace the starter, alternator, and water pump is 5 years. Its so old that the only way to get major parts is to buy a second one! We'll just use it until it no longer runs.

I like saving the discarded stuff too...last year a scrapped Clark forklift, this fall a scrapped Towmotor(still not done, but getting close) www.flickr.com/photos/90822467@N08/albums/72157711586635043 the clark supposedly needed a engine- found engine was just neglected- but needed about everything else LOL...brakes, steering, leaks, wiring, missing parts, motor just needed a tuneup/pcv/vacuum hoses and a few gaskets- thing looks/runs like new again, except for a couple dents in the lips of the front wheels. the old towmotor needed surgery- steering was wasted, adapted a chevy astro van power box, added a ford pump, took a lot longer than expected, but it drives like a new one- had a low hour flathead that just purrs, just a few oil leaks- replaced the old hoses, now just needs stripped/painted/front tires and a few other tidbits... my bridgeport mill , leblond lathe, and deckel grinder were all pulled from the scrap pile too- i'm sure they will all outlast me

A friend of mine was looking into buying a newer Hitachi/ Deere to fix up and use. He found out most parts available are cheaper from Deere here in Canada. I believe from his comment the Hitachi has a different motor to, so maybe you can only buy motor parts for this Deere machine through Deere or a jobber company that sells some of it.. The machine he wanted had electrical control issues, when he found out the cost of the parts and dealer shop time setting it up for a fix that the dealer mechanic said "might" fix it, when he talked to him in the bar one night. He went and got a mechanical 690 and spent $5000 on fixing that instead, as it would still do his work. if he had a newer one he was going to have to go do custom work to pay for it on top of his own stuff, and spend over $50.000 in the end he figured. so far he's saved $40.000. I saved $15.000 doing the same with my TLB to and don't have to put a driver on it and be doing extra custom work to pay for it either. It's all down to spending money and how much you want to keep yourself at the end of the day for dealing with another guys hassle or fixing your machines sometimes L.O.L

It was really good to see you using your knowledge and experience to diagnose faults and to work through them in order to save this machine from being scrapped! Your logical, methodical progress got the machine up and running, and I suspect that had the previous owner dedicated himself to maintaining the machine instead of needlessly putting aluminium tread plate over everything, he'd still have a running machine (especially aftet spending over $500 CAN on replacement injectors!). I have a 1978 John Deere track loader. JD still has some things but I was able to get everything else I needed aftermarket. Caterpillar is great about this, they can still get you just about anything for their old machines. Their machines hold value much better for that reason.

We already have laws that mandate 10 year parts availability for cars and other equipment, once they stop production. At some point, its not feasible to supply parts for the few remaining ones still running. We have a 33 year old JD loader that the only way to get major parts is to buy a second one, just the way it goes for old machines.

With that oil level a mile over full I thought right away blown head gasket filling up the oil pan with coolant.would explain why they messed with all the coolant parts then went to injectors to find that's not what they are after because I'm sure it's burning coolant which would cause terrible overheating,hard starting,low coolant level (New coolant bottle) is a sign they where throwing parts at without knowing how to test things. Great video I LOVE to see people bringing all kinds of machines back from the dead. P.s you really would gut it and scrap it? What year is it? And what would the scrap yard give you for it? I would love to rebuild it. shoot new paint, decals, ect ect and dig my own swimming pool lol
