My first truck! 1972 4300 binder. No AC NO PS NO front brakes!DOT was always on my butt about that… but the line chart is right on the passenger seat door showing no front brakes. With a flatbed i was 25500 light weight. Started out with a 250 cummins. Put a built 380 small cam. At 20 years old is was my hot rod. Lots of loads of iron out of auburn steel to NEW ENGLAND. Ran NYTW a lot back in the day. 9500 bucks back in 78. That truck bought 2 homes for me. 👍👍👍

Yes to full on build... No to MATS. The old binders were work trucks, they are better left untouched when it comes to specification. Judging by the fact that this one has a visor, it was probably pretty sharp at one point. This is a 4200 also, which is a shorter hood than the 4300, so not anything ever built for show. It would be nice restored to original look with the frame stretched a touch longer and an International short bunk,.

@@mintyman1968 I get your point, but all these trucks were built as working vehicles in the beginning weren't they, but yes you are right that some were made to be more dressy than others. Seems We can all agree that this truck here has good bones and deserves more than to just be a yard mule. Awesome find, 4200. 1974 is a fairly early one. Think they came out in 71. You could probably find a nicer aluminum cab to swap on. They used the same cab on various different models. You know the 4200 is the short hood vs a 4300. The Snyder aluminum fuel tanks were so cool, they didn't have plain ends, they were kind of like a bullseye. I bet the door tag says it was built in Fort Wayne Indiana

That is a good score...... I have been a driver for 45 years. I was an owner operator from 1979 to 1990. During that time My truck was the first model year 1974 COE 4070 B. Factory ordered with a Detroit 8V-71 T Fuel squeezer. Set at 335 hp. I bought it used, with 147k on it. No. It did NOT stay thay way. The Awesome Transtar ll. My Dad had a COF 4070 A High Cab. The A model version to fit the Detroit 8V- 71 T. Or, the Cummins VT-903 turbocharged V-8's under the cab. Yep, there were 2 Turboed V-8's. But, there were more at that time. There was the 3408 Cat. And, The V-800 International engine. Both with their own inherent issues. But? The Cummins and Detroit ruled the roost on the V-8's with the Detroits easily in 1st place. Til the 8V-92's came out. People called them road oilers. My truck had the 84" BBC cab. My Dads, "After the PO laid it over" had the 88" BBC cab installed before we bought it. Both had Detroit 8V-71 T's in them..Your truck is absolutely rebuildable. And, you should do it. Here it a tip for the engine. If you decide to rebuild it. Change out the trunk type pistons for Crossheads. Put N-70 injectors in it and set them at 1.484 with your Detroit tune up kit. Use a large bearing blower from the 92 series engines. That will give you about 335 to 340 hp from that 318. Keep an eye on the heat. It will crack a head if you don't. Guess how I know?

Nice looking old rig, needs some work. Glad your mechanics took the safe road and want to look the motor over before starting it. Front brakes required July 25, 1980. Here is the pertinent code. 49cfr§ 393.42 Brakes required on all wheels. (a) Every commercial motor vehicle shall be equipped with brakes acting on all wheels. This requirement also applies to certain motor vehicles being towed in a driveaway-towaway operation, as follows: (1) Any motor vehicle towed by means of a tow-bar when another motor vehicle is full-mounted on the towed vehicle; and (2) Any saddlemount configuration with a fullmount. (b) Exception. (1) Trucks or truck tractors having three or more axles and manufactured before July 25, 1980, are not required to have brakes on the front wheels. However, these vehicles must meet the requirements of § 393.52. You can get the electronic CFR from the National Archive.

If it runs good, change out the injectors for something like N95 . That should get you to something like 425-450 HP. I'm willing to bet you are going to see a lot of dribbles from the air box drains. It might clear up if you run it hard a bit. If not it's p robably your blower shaft seals. The seals aren't expensive, and to change them is only a few hours labor. Some oil from the air box drains is normal, especially if you idle a lot. As the old guys always told me (and I'm 62) "A Detroit is designed to leak oil" .

@@flintcreektransport no this being a 71 series and a two-stroke there are little tubes down near the bottom of the block right where the oil pan bolts on . Yours being an 8v 71 there should be four of them. When the engine is running you'll feel a stream of are coming out of them. Along with the air will be a little spits of oil. I can tell by the way your guys we're working on it is there someone unfamiliar with it. And I don't mean that as an insult, it's just an engine that they stopped making around 30 years ago. The 60 series was an entirely different animal and it didn't have or need air box drains. In fact it didn't even have an air box

the injectors are in full fuel position when the engine shuts off, you DO NOT bar a two stroke over ever if you like your fingers, the c part of the injector rod will be at the injector body that is full fuel. if the c part is away from the body it is the off position, hook vice grips on the yoke to override the governor rod. best thing since you love cats is to sell the roots blower to a hot rodder and put a 3208 cat in it.

@@flintcreektransport ummm no, he was prying on the fuel rack the wrong way, and anyone who knows anything about a 2 stroke knows better than to bar them over with anything ever, if he is your employee do not let him do it, he will loose a finger or hand, vise grips on rack, bungee cord on yoke forcing injector rail into no fuel position, and then keep hands and fingers clear,

love the truck, but... *damn a detroit. sounds like **_pure_** shit, costs you more in oil, than fuel, and isn't worth the scrap value of the block* i _hate_ a detroit. commercial fisherman here. boat had twin 12v71's in it when i bought it, immediately swapped them out for twin 3508b's. haven't looked back.

You should have left that pos where it was. Drove one back in the 80’s on a farm when I was in high school. See a hill drop two gears and another three on the way up. Now a days you’ll probably get a ticket for making a lot of noise and not going fast enough. He had a 4070B cab over with the same motor. We tried blowing this one up to no avail. Then he bought better trucks trucks and those went to the scrap yard.

Why? I’m glad your guys has enough smarts not to start that Detroit diesel. This truck is way past gone. Unless you can afford to sink a boatload of money into it, I wouldn’t bother. The cab is rusted out beyond fixable. Front brakes became mandatory in July 1980 for all heavy trucks.
