Yeah, there's a video of a 1978 F250 4x4 on here being detailed that the old man that bought it drove like 2 times and stuck it in a garage and never touched it again just because he never needed to drive it. Had like 140 miles on it. Unless you're very well off or borderline rich today you don't even think like that. Obviously the ratio between income and truck prices were even more extreme back in the 70s than the 2000s.

Man I love these old 8.1's, so wish I could find a nice one nearby but they're actually sorta hard to find. She spun right to life as soon as she got fuel. Those suckers run forever as long as they got oil, amazing find. Sad to see it sit for so long but she's in good hands now it looks like.

i bought an 8.1 with 87k on it last year, got it up to 112k now. Finally went and plugged it into a scanner, no stored DTCs nor active ones at 110k on the original spark plugs. By god does it drink fuel but I love it.

Those 8.1's were originally marine engines and there was a test where they ran it at 300 hours WOT with only 5 minutes idling every hour for a rest.

Have owned a 2001 hd 8.1 for 23 yrs --- since new. The cam sensor + crank sensor do fail --- was a recall on them. Will stall + hard start ! They do use oil !! Keep an eye on it. They are bullet proof, still have original factory parts after 300,000 +

I've got 240k on my avalanche 8.1. After a fresh oil change she doesn't use a drop for about 2kish miles. But once it starts getting dirty she starts using it fast. Like a quart a week lol

We're u live that bed rotted out ,i have one just like this one, it was just as clean as this one till some f..k thief stole it an smashed the right side an removed parts of it was able to get it back ,replaced missing parts except the bed there's not that many, all i need is the right side of bed but i can get the hold bed complete i would buy it. Oh that starter sound takes me back to childhood. My dad's '01 1500 with the 4.8 and 4 wheel drive was such a soldier. Overloaded more times than we could count and didn't fail us until the fuel pump went in 2015. Sadly the PA winters ate it down to the bone so it went to scrap in 2020 with 256k on the original engine, transmission, and differentials. It was the last vehicle my dad bought brand new and it paid every cent back in service. Hopefully his 2017 doesn't let him down.

Bought it cheap, then proceeded to do a ton of work on the mechanicals, the body & paint, and a few upgrades. My total cost? About $20k. But it is clean, presentable, reliable, and moved our family off the insane West Coast.

He had it for almost all of my childhood and eventually sold it to get a new GMC 1500 because he no longer needed a heavy duty truck. The little holes you mentioned in the water pump are weep holes, so when the bearing fails it will leak and let you know it's time for a new pump. People in comments are whack, you keep doing you. Make it happen.

When you change the oil 🛢 substitute 1 quart of oil 🛢 for 1 quart of Lucas trust me it's truly a miracle in a bottle you'll never have a dry start again.

I've bought and sold couple of these trucks the 8.1 holds up rather well against a duramax I was offered 7k by the tow truck driver non running if I had to sell id ask 10k but I like it to much down here in Georgia I can get 10k for my 6.0 gas all day long but we don't have rust and the truck market is hot right now

My neighbor has an 03 avalanche 2500 with the 8.1. I think the reason why it kept stalling at first was an anti theft system. I did some work to his truck and I had the same stalling problem after reconnecting the battery a couple different times.

@@DannysCam it's not dex cool I personally have not used it and have only seen it ( atleast I believe it is the same ) in a Subaru it was expensive and was on the generation of h4 engines that killed head gaskets constantly. Ironically I swapped to green when I did the first timing belt at just under 80k miles Subaru recommended 80k for the belt. I bought it with 18k miles and sold it after 4.5 years with 346k on it and never did head gaskets and had no leaks from them according to Subaru after the first year I owned it I had the highest reported mileage for a 2010 and was still the highest mileage when I sold it in early 2017. I found that out when I went to do the transmission fluid service and was told that the only way to get the fluid at the time was direct from Subaru by 5 gallon pail and was very expensive fortunately the transmission shop owner (it was a 1st gen CVT and I was not going to touch it as it still was under warranty at the first service) was my neighbor and he cut me a deal to prevent from having to buy the 5 gallon pail when I didn't need the entire bucket. Did the fluid service every 40k miles and the CVT was flawless it's entire life as well goes to show it's not always about what you use it's about maintenance. The big problem with dex cool and any long life antifreeze is the way to long service interval. Dex cool had really bad chemistry issues early on it's not as bad as it used to be but still doesn't get along as well as green does with gaskets. I'd rather service more often and not have gaskets failing. Though I have not seen any issues with it I have heard that the green doesn't protect aluminum as well but I don't really buy that as we have had atleast aluminum radiators since the late 70s and only green coolant. The only thing that I can see being a problem with the blue is it's a diesel formula and I'm not sure what would happen with it in a gas engine as gas engines don't create the same type of gasses and may react differently than traditional coolant to them

8.1 and 6.0 also 5.3 all good motors for gas. Not sure why people don’t like diesels? 2006 GMC DURAMAX 6.6 turbo diesel amazing truck. I guess everyone has their ship. I love both miss my 6.0 but man this diesel is amazing. Just a joy to drive and if you don’t have money for fixing your truck don’t buy it. Nice truck.

When I worked in a shop I was always working on low mile duramax trucks this was back in 06 09 we had one 8.1 3500 hot shot rigg come in it had 300k miles did spark plugs and coil packs on it it had the original plugs, there's a reason uhaul ran 8.1s in there c5500 for years

That starting and dying is the security system it's trying to recognize the key. turn it forward let the key set on run for 5 mins with the engine off and it should reconnect the key then start mine does it all the time . The part that reads the key in the column is bad on mine
