Visma was my favorite team last season and Jonas was fantastic in so many races until his recent accident, one of the transcendent riders, no question. And I cheer for him to make a full recovery, as I do for all riders, I hate crashes and the injuries they inflict. Yet, given the severity of what Jonas suffered, I think it is great he made this promotional appearance, especially when his rival Tadej is earning all the headlines in Italy, and if he can participate in the Tour, wow, good for him. But wouldn't it be a sort of LeMond in '89 situation, when Greg returned from injury and his greatest rival, Laurent Fignoun, was at the pinnacle of his career? His fans were happy to see Greg back in action, yet expectations were rightfully tempered and any solid performance would have been a success. And we know that he far exceeded expectations and that made his victory even more incredulous and joyous. So I think if Jonas comes into the Tour like that, no expectations, it would be seen as a win for him, a huge step in his recovery and maybe next year for more. 😀

@@DawnWright Are you new to the cycling world? If Jonas doesn’t make it to the start line at the TDF, Visma will need a GC leader, that would be Sepp Kuss . . . as a result, Jonas would more than likely become their GC leader at La Vuelta. Had Jonas not crashed, and say he was to win this years TDF, then Sepp and Jonas would be co-leaders at La Vuelta. They would decide on the road at La Vuelta who would become #1 and #2. Jonas stepped aside for Sepp at the Vuelta last year because he had a stomach bug the first week. Funny aspect, wasn’t Wout injury very similar to Jonas's, as far as we know? Shouldn’t the same question be asked of Wout? I think given time both will be fine. Only Visma LAB will use the tour as a training ride for their superstars.
@Soli117 ай бұрын
Big difference is that Wout is not riding for GC. He can pick what stages to save energy and when to spend it. Jonas will not have that luxury. If the GC guys go, he has to go with them. And as far as I know then Wout's injuries were "only" broken collarbone and ribs. I have not heard anything of him having a punctured lung. It seems that it's the lung that is causing the most doubt about Jonas. It makes sense. You cannot climb well without your lungs being 100%.
@stineagerbk92347 ай бұрын
@@Soli11there was a broken sternum and a (late detected) pneumothorax on Wout's injury list too. And Jonas didn't have a fully punctured lung by the reports. He had contusion (bruise) and pneumothorax (air in the chest cavity, but not unlikely to be from a fully collapsed lung as they didn't discover it until the day after with Jonas either.) There's quite a lot of levels of this type of injuries and if the pneumothorax wasn't detected immediately, it likely was on the less severe side of the spectrum.

Unless there is a risk for Jonas long term health, I think that he should be at the tour. He has an amazing ability to recover in week 2 and 3, and kind of like Jan Ulrich in the past could bank on riding himself into form. Last year in the time trial it was evident that the relied on a lot of training as he was very precise in how he cut the turns, and there is no doubt that it will hurt him, but winning three in a row is too good to pass up.

From what I have read, Visma-LAB is not a team that pushes their riders to come back before they are ready. IMO, that means that Jonas will not ride the Tour unless he and the team feel he can do so competitively. In addition, Tadej Pogacar is tearing things up so why risk sending Jonas back too soon if he is not physically ready. But I don't think there's any chance he can fight for the victory. His injury this year is a lot worse than Tadej in 2023. Pogi was back on the rollers after only a week, it took Jonas almost a month. I don't think he should do the Tour, he wouldn't be able to compete against such high level for a full three weeks and he is even more likely to have not just one but multiple bad days like Tadej did last year. Will Jonas return to the Tour this year, doubtful but I think eyes will be on Tadej and Primoz on the lead up. Tadej will win the Giro, he has no competition unless you call Thomas huffing and puffing a challenge. Primoz strangely I don't see as a threat, then again we have little to measure him by other than his living atop Mt Teide, if that's where he is... Jonas will recover fully, although probably no where near top form, he'll do the Vuelta in August and win that. 2025 everyone will be a year older and I suspect a real barn burner of a Tour between Tadej and Jonas they both should be at the absolute gheight of their physical abilities then.

Wout's injuries were not more severe? If anything then Jonas' injuries have been more severe since he had all the same injuries as Wout + lung contusion, punctured lung and broken fingers.
@stineagerbk92347 ай бұрын
@@Soli11Wout also had pneumothorax (not necessarily meaning a fully punctured lung for either) but it was only discovered a while after the crash... So not much difference. Plus we don't know how many ribs Jonas broke nor what ribs it were for either.

Froome had his best years behind him anyway. Bernal and Vingegaard is the same age as Armstrong was when he won his first TdF and had recovered from cancer, at 27, so they both have a lot of career left.

That’s one of the most stupid question I have ever heard.

I won’t believe that he can’t be as good as last year. His injuries were not in the same league as Chris and Egan. But visma are having a dreadful season and that might put pressure on them
@BKKLB6 ай бұрын
I think a punctured lung is a real problem for him to be challenging at the tour his year. Maybe I am wrong and maybe he shocks the world but I suspect that he will need to focus on next year. It is a shame because Tadej seems to have upped the levels on his end in anticipation of a showdown with Vingegaard and UAE have stacked their team to compete with Visma... I think even Pogacar would admit that he would rather have a fully fit Vingegaard to compete against.

Here’s the problem, if he gets 2nd at the tour to Pogicar , will we blame it on the crash?? Or is it possible that he comes in 100% and we get a close battle that seems fair, or rather one in which both are 100%. Last year Pogicar had the injury that messed up his preparation. I imagine Pogacar wins this year and we don’t get a battle of them 100 % until 2025

he should be fine

You may have to only look back to Andy Schleck, Egan Bernal and Chris Froome for your answer... lets hope its not the case with JV.. 7 weeks to get ready

Jonas wasn’t injured as heavily

No lower body injuries in Vingegaard this time. And he came back just fine from that broken femur in 2017

Crushing the field on the climbs. Sounds familiar. Let me think.............

I like Vinegegaard, but no rah, rah from me. He was pounded in that crash. There will be a lot of pre$$ure on him to do the Tour, but I think, long term, it would be a mistake to take it on this year. Let the recovery be gradual, and, once he's clearly healed, do a late season race program that graduates in intensity. Continue through normal winter training, then come back in full form next season. Stage racing needs him to be competitive with Pogačar!

Serious question: all professional cyclists now look anemic. I know they’re top notch professionals with doctors and nutritionists behind them. However, given how serious are their injuries when crashing (I also understand they ride at higher speeds) do you know about anyone analyzing if they are so near their breaking points (physical stress) that now they face career ending injuries more often than before?

He is a decent, shy and quiet guy from smalltown, Denmark. He does not take well to fame and fortune, or publicity. Perhaps he feels he has succeeded as a cyclist; but ruined his life as he knew it in other ways. If he wants to race because he loves it: bring it on! He's provided so much entertainment already and no doubt still fun to watch. And if he decides to hang up his bike, never to be heard from again, so be it, and we can all wish him well; and be thankful for the days we got to watch one of the greatest ever. Greetings from the USA.

He is a father and husband before anything, and he considers it’s his responsibility to provide for them, and his way of doing it is by being a cyclist worth several millions a year, so he will do everything to continue being the best and deserve those millions
@stineagerbk92347 ай бұрын
He is literally already training in Mallorca and said he was aiming for TdF in that video. That doesn't sound like a guy who's done with winning races to me.

No one "deserves" a win. You either win, or you do not based on reality not favoritism.
