It’s apparently an effective strategy done by shopping apps in China. They also feature random live drops of discount vouchers when watching and can even haggle the price down with the streamer I think?. The live chat also commenting they want to buy it may also steer people to joining in on the bandwagon. It’s honestly wild to me how different China’s online ecosystem is lol. Some online shopping streamers also reached celebrity status and even collating with designer brands.

I agree with your sentiment but they just see it from an entirely different perspective. They think "I just got paid (or my recreational spending budget is more than enough for me/my family) so why not treat myself? Plus, this influencer is somebody whose opinion I trust and is like mine so it is very unlikely I'll get burned. Plus, buying this new clothing item/trinket/gadget is something that I need/have wanted for a while so this shopping experience will make everything easier!"

They make it like everyone can become a million dollar influencer. It will get harder and harder for new live streamers to gain an audience. It just like game streaming. There are game streamers that made a lot of money because they were the first to start doing it. If a new game streamer were starting out today. They would have to complete with thousands of other game streamers. Then there are people who will take advantage of the hype and make money by “teaching” people how to become influencers. It no different than those “get rich quick” seminars that target older people. The truth is that “influencers” need people who work regular “9 to 5” jobs to buy their crap.

As a Millennial born in 1991, if I’m looking for a specific product, I’ll watch youtube videos specifically about that type of product. I was looking for the best skincare routine, so I watched some youtube videos by Dermatologists. Otherwise, I’d rather go on Amazon or google and just search for the product and read the reviews. I’m not about to sit there watching a livestream when I’m not even looking for any particular product. I feel like this livestream model will mostly appeal to Boomers and Gen Z.

In the western society, people tend to spend on car, home/ apartments as the basic necessities, then buy accessories as they go. In China, the working class can't afford houses or cars, because housing prices are outrageous. So the working classes indulgence are shopping, if they can afford it, they buy luxury bags, shoes 👟 etc as status symbol.
