When you've been playing as long as someone like Dave Mustain has, you can't help but pick up some theory along the way. The question is as following: knowing music theory is very important, of course, but doesn't write songs in itself. So, that is why Dave Mustaine's musical and songwriting contributions to the development of the genre largely supersedes Kiko. Kiko is a great guitarist, is talented and he shredds as fuck, but apart from Conquer or die and a few Angra songs, his legacy to metal is much smaller than Dave's. All this to conclude that the nerd (in music theory) does not necessarily brings more creative output than a self-taught musician. I am not downgrading Kiko's hability but just using him as an example to show that formal training does not equate automativally with best achievements in the songwriting process, most notably when we speak about rock and metal.

Cool vid… I wish people (in general, not meaning you per se) would recognize that Music doesn’t come from theory, theory comes from music. Music theory is just a faster way to understand how to get to the sound you want. Knowing that a minor third tends to sound “sadder” or that it’s easy to compose around fourths and fifths isn’t something that’s hard to understand intuitively and repeat. If you understand Theory then you can understand that within your first few weeks of playing guitar… If you don’t it’s just gonna take you longer to figure it out. I think Kiko is right that Mustaine doesn’t know about Chord construction and modes, but that does mean he can’t alter basic rock chords like he did in Holy Wars or solo in Phrygian… Also, my vote for one of the best Megadeth songs that’s super underrated is “My last words/Next Victim” (the original title). I definitely think that’s one of the best songs Megadeth has done…

Saw the thumbnail, and thought... 'Oh yeah, Symphony of Destruction'. Analysis is 1000% spot on. That great underlying E Phrygian. Chromatics handing off to leading tones, and then to resolution. The pre-chorus that sets the stage, but the song never quite gives you everything you're after until launching into the solo. That glorious solo that has that same kind of movement from other songs like "Kickstart Your Heart". Some rhythmic device (not a drummer) that makes you want to drive 200mph.

None of this meant to take anything away from the phenomenal talent of Mustsine. But it does explain Metallica a bit more.

Pretty cool vid man. I love these, it's not just reactions and ripping on the music. We actually try to understand the music here, however good or bad it is lol. Man you got an ear that I don't man. Pretty good profession.

This is one of my favorite songs by Megadeth to play !! Simply because it's so fun to just jam on live !! Dave may not have formal theory training but he definitely has a firm grasp on writing songs using his ear & experience that make it all work perfectly !!!
@dr.kennethspeers80142 жыл бұрын
Seems like Kiko would know. I'm pretty sure Dave himself has admitted to really only understanding simple pentatonic box stuff. You can be a brilliant writer and not know a lick about theory. Its about having a good ear, and fucking around enough to find interesting sounds. At least thats how I interpret it having done years of writing without theory, and then learning theory later on.

First Megadeth song I ever heard was In My Darkest Hour. It was at that point when I understood Megadeth was better than Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, Testament combined.

I love these videos that dissect music! I've noticed how Megadeth play chords/arpeggios differently to say, Metallica, but I learned a new word today: Chromaticism! Now I know what that chord pattern is called! Thank you Shred, I'll be tuning in to more videos, muahahaha!

For a guy that “ doesn’t know any theory” he wrote a lot of complex and legendary music
@davidschwartz34272 жыл бұрын
For real. And it translates into the difficulty to play. Pick any song off any album, its probably pretty hard to play. I'm not saying good writing and difficulty are intrinsically attached but its close. This is one of their easiest songs to play and to do it well is still a challenge I'd say even for advanced players.

This one will always go down as one of my favorites. Dave has always had a unique sound that is unmatched anywhere else. Also though I grew up listening to this song at Monster Jam alot too so it holds a special place in my heart there.

You can say that Dave didn’t learn theory is the reason he was able to think out of the box. Many times people who are too stuck on theory are not that great of a composers in metal. Chris Broderick for instance

There’s hilarious footage back in the day of Layne Staley, doing the “watch him become a God“ line, And the rest of AIC laughing….kind of making fun of Dave, but in a good natured way …and nailing Dave perfectly….. Layne Staley got his voice down to a T….. just picture Layne singing that line , and you can hear it

I think the answer to that is it's all in how you look at it. Our judgements and certain loves can cause certain tastes. One person could feel the way you do about that song with post american world. But what i practise everyday is loving all music equally.
