Fun Fact: Marty had to play almost all of the solos off the Rust in Peace album in one take. According to the Rust in Peace book (fantastic read for fans), Marty was suffering from nerve damage in his picking arm and his doctor told him to paly as little guitar as possible. He only played to solos on the album and Dave did all the riffs for both guitar parts. Marty had to write then record the solos and live with the outcome from that take. It gives me much more of an appreciation for his guitar work on this record. Therefor I think it has to be Marty as the best Megadeth guitarist.

Couldn’t agree more….Broderick is definitely the most technical of all of Megadeth’s guitarists (I think Kiki would take 2nd place), but Marty was just magic and had so much fire behind him coming out of Cacophony and having something to prove. It’s interesting he keeps talking about the chords behind the solo, as I read an interview with Marty way back and he said that he would intently follow the chords and change his ideas per chord (though I think he was mainly referring to the Lucretia solo at the time).

Playing and singing at the same time isn't easy, but the wall is in the brain. Once you tear down the wall between "body does this, mouth sings that" it opens up all the doors. As a drummer, I can sing and play at the same time. But I started in 1994, and couldn't do both independently of one another, at the same time, until around 2007-ish. And then by 2009-2010 I could play on an electric set while writing a song, and carry a casual conversation while playing technically complicated parts (IE Syncopations / fills). Nowadays, I can play in 13/16 while talking to my kid or my wife and walk them through what I'm doing, because they both want to learn. It's been literally 30 years as of this year that I picked up drumsticks. If I'm playing something like Tornado of Souls (which is INCREDIBLY FUN to play on the drums lmao) or something that takes a lot of energy like "Champion" by Falling in Reverse or "Everlong" by Foo Fighters, I can now play while talking to a band member, like, "Okay, and then here's a change, and there's going to be that one part that comes up right here, oh and hey ... you just stepped on your patch cable, you're going to yank it out of your guitar, doofus. Also, your B string is out of tune since that last divebomb you did. Anyway, here comes the breakdown, so get ready..." Or I'll just sing if I need to. But that sort of thing took more than a decade of playing to break down the walls in the brain, and more than one decade to master it. And if you're a pro like Dave Mustaine, then you do it every night while on tour, and it becomes second nature. If I can play complicated prog-metal parts and intricate triplets and sextuplets on the hats, on the toms, etc., while holding a conversation (or singing backup parts when playing live), then Dave can sing while playing much more complicated riffing like Holy Wars, We'll Be Back, Death From Within, or a zillion other songs (especially since Megadeth liked putting out an album every 2-3 years on average up until recently lol). Let's face it, the guy is super prolific, and just churns out song after song to see what sticks. That, to me, is much harder than singing while playing, because even if you break down the walls in the brain between playing and singing at the same time ... there's nothing in the brain you can break down when you get writer's block. And that guy just kept pumping out album after album after album. That's what impresses ME the most, lol.
@tyree90559 ай бұрын
@wilhelmtheconquerer6214 I'd actually give Dave the edge, because his playing is so busy, technical, and fast. James' playing is brutally hard with the palm-muted galloping riffs, but Dave's, to me, is harder and more demanding overall. Both are great players, but one is more musical while the other is more technical.

I think Marty is logically the "greatest" of their guitarists. The creative alchemy that spawned The Greatest Thrash Album of All Time was "Dave, David, Marty, and Nick." Doesn't imply the prev/future guitarists are any less talented, though I WOULD argue that Marty's skill and creativity on that album were completely off the chain. He literally inspired a generation or two (or three) of guitarists to rethink their game, and greatly contributed to the very genesis of Thrash as a genre.

Every guitarist who has played for Megadeth brings a different flavor to the music. Chris Poland's playing, with his Jazz Fusion sound, is incredible. I could listen to him play all day, and did years ago when I would listen to one cassette for days at a time. Marty's spices up his solos with arpeggios and exotic scales. His ability to twist and turn like a rollercoaster blows my mind like it did when I first listened to Rust in Peace. Dave's solos I love as well. They are like a chainsaw welding madman at times, full of intensity. He may not play like Chris or know the scales like Marty, but he takes what he does know and uses it to its fullest. As for Kiko and the others, I don't listen to as much Megadeth recorded after Marty left as I should, so I can't give a comment on them.

Metallica has a lot of legendary songs, but most part of the solos aren't made with so caution and inspiration like Megadeth does. He adds something amazing to every Megadeth song, and it never steps out of bounds of what the song is supposed to be. It always complements the song and pushes it to the next level. It's not like a lot of metal bands where the instrumentals are really weak but the solos are hot. I see alot of people commenting that the solo wouldn't be nearly as impressive without the chords under, but isn't that the whole point? Isn't that half of what makes Marty's playing really interesting and head turning in the first place? If he was just playing random blues licks and minor scales like Kirk Hammett nobody would care but he takes the chords and manipulates his note choice into something phenomenal. Long live Marty, King of Metal Phrasing!

Though I like the tornado of SOLOS more than the ultimate holy wars solo… I still like Holy Wars more than Tornado of Souls as a whole and I personally think it’s the greatest Megadeth song. EDIT: Yes, I realize that I didn’t tap the tritone scale 666 times, does that mean the punishment is due?
@danielpage20138 ай бұрын
When he talks about the harmonic minor 5th - the diatonic V ( 5th) chord in every major key and in harmonic minor is a dominant 7th chord, bc the major third of the 5th chord is the the major 7th of the key, aka the lead tone, which has a strong pull to be resolved by the I chord. A minor V is diatonic to natural minor but in commercial music the dominant V is frequently substituted to create the motion towards the I. In context of this song, play F7 in the position spelling F# C# E A# and notice how it sounds most natural to resolve with a B minor, or B major chord

@@torcida9 Oh man, there are so many good solo's and I've been listening to Rock N Roll for a long time. I'll pick three that stick with me 1) Kiss - Deuce (Ace Frehley)....superb for its time! , 2) Pantera - Floods & Cemetery Gates (I mean, Dimebag Darrell..need I say more, 2 for 1), 3. Molly Hatchet - Flirtin With Disaster. I could list a whole bunch more but these Solo's have so much soul to me and are timeless.

I’ve seen so many videos reviewing this solo and no one has ever put so much emphasis on the chords behind what’s being played and I appreciate that so much. Solos should never be gibberish “on key”. No, you need to understand the chord progression and Melodies. Amazing video bro, you got yourself a new subscriber.

Watching this again. Remarks: - Marty's the best, hands down, but Kiko is one of the greats! - Dave's playing on this is also stellar!! - Dave Ellefson got kicked out again, for good this time, sadly... - Great video, you playing on a folk guitar to illustrate metal is an interesting choice.

Marty, was definitely following the chords,I have watched two Instructional videos with Marty where he demonstrates that exact approach to solo’s, and the “trick” as a guitarist/composer is to create your own style,way,approach of how you navigate chords changes, Marty does it beautifully, he adds 2s to his minor arpeggios, or plays a minor arpeggio going up and resolves to the major arpeggio Am to C over a Aminor chord, and he also goes “outside” for just enough to as he puts it “ Grab the audience’s attention licks” over the E he plays a E 7#9 arpeggio, not just a E or a E7, adding the #9 gives a slight diminished sound, if he does play something scalar he usually sequences it, and not a predictable 3 note per string pattern, like most competent “metal” players would, and the way he bends is unique as well and another compositional “trick” Marty uses is if he does play outside/ get the audience attention lick he will usually follow it with a “familiar/ home base” bluesy lick.. and that is what makes Marty a superb,unique player. I was aware of him saw the Shrapnel ads in the guitar magazines for his Cacophony, albums with Jason Becker and just never checked them out, and forgot about him, until Rust In Peace came out and have been a HUGE fan ever since , the other personal favorite solo’s of mine that I like from the Rust in Peace album is “Lucretia “ Marty’s is great, still can hum the whole solo in my head right now thinking of it, and Dave’s solo on that song is great too, perfect contrast between two great players and different styles, check it out, Tornado is a classic and will be forever, but Lucretia deserves some love as well!!! P.S. all the great guitar players follow the chords Randy Rhoads, Mark Knopfler, Jimi Hendrix, SRV, Satarani, Vai, Eric Johnson, just they each have Developed their own approach/style to doing that, I am working on my own style, my own approach, because I believe as great as someone is by playing other peoples stuff, the world doesn’t need a carbon copy of Marty,EVH,SRV they someone to be as original as they can be, and be themselves and develop their own style…

Yes. yes. Tornado is the best Megadeth (and probably metal) solo. But, do you even Dave shredding in phrygian dominant? I'm talking about last Wake Up Dead solo. I fall in love with that solo everytime.

I think you should have used a vid where matry plays the solo. I cannot find the right words for it but like how he specifically plays the solo and makes variaions of it to me reveals what makes it so great beyond just the choice of notes.

Marty did not write any of the solos. Chris Poland wrote them. Marty added his touch and polished them to what we have on the release of the finest Megadeth record written. Although countdown to extinction was an awesome follow up. Rust in peace set a shear mind blowing experience for those of us that were old enough to see it's initial release on cassette tape.

The bassist here is James LoMenzo, he was the bassist for White Lion. He left Megadeth on good terms when David Ellefson and Dave Mustaine made nice again but slipped back into the fold for touring after Ellefson was fired. The drummer is Shawn Drover, arguably the least favorite drummer that has been in Megadeth. He played competently but sounded flat in Megadeth. Great video and music education!

That’s how I play my scales as chords when practicing. Octave ascending and descending . Trill runs absolutely everywhere!! Locate every harmonic possible, like Eddie Van Halen that was definitely a goal. Just like this song integrating harmonics into rhythms. Pinch, slap, ghost and tap ascending and descending chromatic harmonics scales!! The fun stuff!!

But it's not the greatest Metal solo of all time. It is awesome, though. Alex Skolnick's Practice What You Preach and Return To Serenity solos are better in my opinion. And I like a lot of Kirk Hammett solos better. I don't give a fuck what people say about Kirk, he's amazing to me and has written many great and iconic solos. My Megadeth guitarists ranking. 1. Chris Poland 2. Marty Friedman 3. Kiko Louriero 4. Chris Broderick 5. Al Pitrelli 6. Glen Drover 7. Jeff Young 8. Kerry King 9. The dude that filled in for Chris Poland then went to the dessert to trip on LSD.

Great Video and great analysis ! In Tornado, I love the fact that Marty mixes the most technical tool w the most simples ones like the Tremolos. I think it helps maintaining the level of intensity without forcing anything. Otherwise, yes, Tornado is one of the best solos ever played, not just in Metal, but in General. Along with Tornado of Souls, To me the best solos ever played on a guitar are Jimi Hendrix whole improvisation at Woodstock, played live ! Then I'd add a Tom Morello solo, just because his music is revolutionary to the point that very few guitarists can do what he's been doing for more than 30 years without coming close. It's the Scratching mixed with Shredding that makes Morello's solos unique. So if I had to pick one up I'd add Promenade - guitar fury remix - that he played in SSSC with Boots Riley. It's the furthest and the craziest Morello went on a solo. And it's a dope in a dope song. Friedman's Tornado of Souls, Hendrix's impro and Morello's Promenade are the best solos ever played on a guitar IMO
