It's time for another personnel file!
And what better example of a strong Starfleet career than that of William T Riker, first officer of two Enterprises and eventual captain of the Titan!
Also I think he has had the most cameos alongside his wife, Troi.

He was so important that in season 2, when he grew the beard, it created its own trope. "Growing the beard" is the opposite to 'Jumping the shark.' When a show is Growing the Beard, it is becoming markedly better in every regard to earlier seasons.

His very unique jovial command style. He clearly likes to losen the reins a bit but knows when to pull back. He wants to come across as a "I'm your friend" kinda guy with the crew. And in Resurrection especially he didnt mind the other senior officers using their own initiative without direction, example Geordie dumping the warp core before Riker even asked him clearly trusting their knowledge yeah sure that comes with years of serving together but we've never seen other officers do that before.

I'm just disappointed that in *Picard* due to _limited budget_ we didn't see the big battle scene afterwards, when Rikers Inquiry fleet _blows away the entire Zhat Vash fleet_ in a coordinated salvo ambush, as soon as they have moved far enough away from the Androids Planet that no stray shots could hit the colony. And we see the Inquiry Class in all its glory, and understand why it is such a powerhouse, not only the firepower of a combat ship designed and refined (not a rush job) post Dominion war, but with its oversized impulse engines being amazingly maneuverable and responsive - like a Intrepid Defiant hybrid in performance. They were escorting the Romulan ships and on a coded signal every Inquiry class ship unloaded _all weapons_ on their designated targets while a massive Tachyon burst made sure none could cloak to get away. The scenes showed all the Romulan ships being damaged, some destroyed outright in the opening shots, and then the StarFleet fleet cleaning up the remainder of the Zhat Vash fleet, with a few dramatic scenes of particular Romulan ships being captured by boarding parties of highly trained marines that disabled the self destruct systems as their opening moves while stunning all the Romulans. It was written as a very satisfying sequence, where we see Starfleet taking the gloves off and being very pragmatic and ruthless. Then there's the bit where Troi orders the prisoners to be interrogated by full blooded Betazoids [it did raise the question of who's looking after the kid? But Starfleet probably has good childcare with very thorough background checks], she makes a biting comment about _"hiding secrets from my Mother"_ as a little tribute to the late Majel Barrett, who is CGI'd in with her face briefly scene in the background (they have a lot of spare footage from the cutting room floor over the years) and her voice being heard telepathically. It would have been a great sequence, but in addition to costing a lot to film - not just the epic CGI battle and furball of the the battle, but the interior shots of the boarding parties with various Federation species - there was supposed to be a few Gorn, which would only be used for that one scene, then the actual different sets created … It was also cut just because they didn't have enough time in that episode. It's a shame, because without that whole sequence it _gives the impression_ that StarFleet *just let the Zhat Vash go,* which would be epically stupid and come back to bite them in so many ways. First they could never catch them again, the Zhat Vash were a cell structure organisation and this would be the only opportunity to get them all together. It would never arise again. And the big one, they let Commodore Oh get away with every secret known by the head of StarFleet intelligence. That's a bigger leak than all the Wikileaks dumps combined. She could cripple their entire service, out all their agents and sources to the whole sector - and reveal every dirty little secret and Black Ops StarFleet has ever done. That is why IMHO they should have cut a few scenes of the epilogue and had even just a shortened version of that sequence - or had two of the characters discussing it and the consequences in passing - just have Troi and Riker on the bridge with Deanna mentioning that her mother was probing Commodore Oh's mind in the Brig and Riker confirming that every Zhat Vash ship had been accounted for and none got away. That is *my* Alpha Canon.

@DissociatedWomenIncorporated
@DissociatedWomenIncorporated 3 жыл бұрын
You know what the worst thing is? The description of the system in the tech manuals made it pretty clear that the holodeck, partially based on transporter technology, could easily just remove any... "residues", convert it to slush for reuse in the replicators, and it was all neat and tidy. Even the TNG episode "The Big Goodbye" states that an improper shutdown of the holodeck may result in all the _real_ matter being "deleted" along with the holographic matter. But then comes along Lower Decks, and makes canon that holodecks have - forgive my obfuscation, I don't want to fall afoul of the evil KZbin AI's comment filters - "scum filters", 'cept without the first s. The only _logical_ explanation is that some especially squeamish crewmembers weren't ok with such... matter being used in the general food replication matter pile, even if it had been twice transformed into entirely different substances. The pansies! 🙄

What ruined the character for me was when the writers for whatever reason says repeatedly he is blocked advancement for younger officers i find it weird that they would keep saying this as if it pays off at the end. I could deal with his smug arrogance but this selfishness is worse. The easiest fix would be to never talk about it in the series at all until the final season with his big send off or just don't mention it make his character worse not better.

His rank is first officer and the differences between a second and a first is very steep and can be as much a wage of 10x of a second class soldier. My biggest problem with the Titan storyline is that it marks A: an apocalypse-level event for the entire Federation, which is... a bit wonky... and B: just kinda... neatly ties up a few too many loose ends. Poof, we have a way to get to the Delta Quadrant semi-instantly because of a thing mentioned in a movie. Poof, the borg are actually buggy old aliens that can correct their bug but just... haven't... for a few thousand centuries... for some reason. Except now they have. Poof, the borg are gone now. It would have been far more satisfying to let space stay Big. I still want to see a storyline wherein an admiralty and forward starbase is established on the site of the Unimatrix installation and transwarp aperture point that Voyager dusted, which would give us a chance to go Back to the delta quadrant, let those events sit on their own, and let us see life on a Starfleet starbase, rather than a cardassian one. It would let us be invested in its construction, see old faces again, see some new ones, and really let us see where those stories grow when they don't have to deal with the Borg being in the way anymore, and even if they did come back, would likely not be nearly as much of a threat.

@marshallhuffer4713
@marshallhuffer4713 3 жыл бұрын
In reality, here how the beard came to be: During TNG's second season hiatus due to the 1988 Writers' Guild of America strike, Jonathan Frakes who played Riker grew a beard, and at a convention he and Gene Roddenberry attended, Roddenberry said the beard had an appropriate nautical look. Thus, the beard became a permanent part of Riker's character and even coined the phrase "Growing the Beard" which is the exact opposite of "Jumping the Shark" when a show starts to turn good.

I suspect that the reason Riker stayed on the Big E was two fold, which build on each other. 1) Picard filled the role of the father figure Riker felt he never really had. 2) building on 1, he stayed because he felt there was more he could learn about command from Picard. When he left for the Titan, it wasn't so much that he believed it was his last chance, but more that he felt there wasn't any room for him to grow as a commanding officer.

8:00 "captained the ships controlled crash landing…" He managed to lose a Galaxy class cruiser to a *single* ancient Klingon Bird of Prey - a Bird of Prey that was uncloaked and in a holding pattern directly ahead. That does not look good. Still… in the long run it was beneficial as it meant they could jump the queue and take the 2nd Sovereign Class ship being built. That would be annoying to the Captain and crew that were originally assigned that ship, they get bumped cause some idiot in charge of the (now) second most powerful ship and flagship of the fleet losses it.

@@BennyLlama39 Troi was in the drivers seat, and we've never seen her fly a ship ever before. How Riker and Worf got out of the eventual hearing into the loss of the Enterpirse-D with their commissions intact is mind boggling. Although it does fit with neither being given a command during the Dominion War.

Riker...he could have had his command early and frankly, he should have taken it. He also lost the Enterprise (tactical thinking my ass, he just had the ship sit there unmoving while the BoP shot through the shields, thanks to Jordi's visor!)...blergh, I prefer the more aggressive and less deverential Thomas Riker (who should IMHO have gotten at least one promotion for "time served" as he had survived on a planet with limited gear etc. for years, where other people would have died or gone crazy!)

Will Riker personnel file? Don't you need to have a personality first? Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis are equally sickening. Having that pair of assholes commandeer the final episode of 'Enterprise' was disgusting. And a slap in the face to the cast of that show,who did their best to make it work.

To me, the quintessential Riker episode is "Peak Performance". We see his strategic inventiveness, his command ability, and both supreme confidence and casual humility. He's so fascinated by the idea of playing against a top-level stratagema master that he willingly gets himself curb stomped just for the experience. He's shown not to have an ego, but to be open to new experiences and capable of brilliant improvisation.

The idea that Riker would not remain as captain of the Enterprise after he defeated the Borg the first time around is just completely ridiculous. If Starfleet actually existed, there is simply no way they are going to return command of the Enterprise to Picard after he had been turned into a Borg, even if Riker and Data did rescue him and help him overcome the programming. At best, Picard would have been sent to Starfleet Medical for months while they tried to make absolutely sure that he was no longer Borg in any way, and then maybe give him command of another ship. It is more likely that he would have been promoted to admiral and stuck in an office somewhere to make sure he couldn't do much damage, just in case. And if for some reason they did decide give him command of the Enterprise again, Riker would have been given command of the first Galaxy-Class starship to be constructed by that task force that Shelby was put in charge of. Ultimately, the only reason for keeping him as first officer on the Enterprise was to keep the character on the show, but they could have easily just followed two ships instead of just one. To this day it makes me mad that they hindered his character development by keeping him stuck as a commander.
