Will Rogers Doing Rope Tricks

Will Rogers has been my hero since 1963. I learned about Cousin Will Rogers as I was learning our language and culture, from my Cherokee grandfather. Yeah, Will and I are both Cherokees, heck Will even joked about it. He said, "I have Indian blood in me. I have just enough white blood for you to question my honesty." No matter the topic, Will Rogers probably made some humorous but prescient remarks. Will Rogers may have crossed over in Point Barrow, Alaska in August of 1935, but his spirit lives on in the hearts of Cherokees like me and millions of others around this country and likely countless foreign countries as well. He was a good and decent man who cared about others and tried to serve them as well as he was able. Blessings to you all.

Thanks for posting this. This legendary Oklahoma cowboy was good friends with another Rodgers.... The Singing Brakeman, Jimmie Rodgers. Just thought I'd add that bit of info.

No kidding? I rarely hear a fact about Will Rogers that I was not aware of, but you got me with this one. I'm a fan of both men and the alleged Cousin of Will Rogers. It makes sense that they'd know each other, I've just never heard it before. Sgi which is Cherokee for thank you.

The skill he demonstrates is very high. He shows one trick I've never seen anyone else do (I've got to go try it) and at least one other I've only seen Vince Bruce, the greatest roper ever, do.

One of the greatest American humorists, a Cowboy, and best Roper I've ever seen that's for sure (among other things). Man his life was cut way too short...to die at just 50 yrs old. So sad. The video is old & grainy but sure captures that mischief in his eyes and his incredible talent. What a card. Died 16 years before I was born too...so I missed ever seeing him. Doggone it.

He learned by watching Vincente Oropeza in a Buffalo Bill Wild West show, but Oropeza wasn't even a trick roper! He was just roping like every Spanish or Mexican Vaquero did in that day. Every hispanic vaquero was an artist with a rope or horse and there were thousands of rope throws then as they didn't have guns; they could rope eagles from horseback as done by Jose Romero in a rodeo in Tuscon in 1932. With a fine plaited reata they could rope ducks as they took off from the water. Grizzly bears, mountain lions, buffalo, elk (etc.) were other favorite targets. They also dueled with reatas and could rope a rifle or pistol from the hands of the americans before they could fire. How many rope throws were lost and forgotten when the Americans used to kill a Vaquero on sight just for being Spanish or Mexican. especially in Arizona and CA. We'll never know!! Rogers is called the best roper? No Way!!!

I adored him from young girlhood and he did beautiful work in Judge Priest with Step N Fetchit who was one of his best friends! Protected Step from misunderstandings of what a character actor does! Attacks on Step lead by Cosby if I recall! Sick man! I love watching those two beautiful men work together!
