We bought a half share of a CSA this winter. Every time we go get our share we buy stuff to can. I just finished canning beets, I canned tomatoes last week, etc. We installed a bidet toilet seat, seriously buy one, we bought 40 cheap face cloths that we use instead of paper towel. We purchased surgical masks to have on hand. We have cash on hand and our fully funded emergency fund and a credit on our heating gas account to fill our 500 gallon tank if we should lose our jobs. The whole house generator runs on propane if we experience an outage as is often the case in our rural NH town we will be prepared. I got a part time job to help pay for our additional preparedness. My husband was told that the likelihood that he will be working from home soon so we got broadband internet instead of satellite based internet. A bonus of COVID is that we’ve never spent this much time together, it’s been very good for us. Control what you can control, and be kind to your fellow man.

I think, given the tensions in the country right now, it's a good idea to be ready for not only a Cvid shutdown, but possibly sheltering in place in case of severe civil unrest at election time. I think the possibility of that is VERY real and it may be safest to stay home for weeks or months is you're able.

As a teacher in California, who now has to teach online, I would agree that we have not gotten out of the first wave. The way our Governor has place county restrictions and regulations, we might not be out of official quarantine for another year! Our state economy is really suffering. Thank you for continuing to provide the essential work on the front lines that is needed to survive this! Continued good health to you!

Great tips. Every time I go grocery shopping I add more food to my pantry. I have never been one to keep much food in the house. My pantry is normally very low with just a few things like pasta and seasonings that I normally use. But right now it is getting pretty full. I'm not sure if we will have a 2nd wave or not, but it does not hurt to make sure that there is plenty of food in the house. Back in March when everything was getting shut down and people were buying everything out, I got very stressed. It was the first time in my life that I ever had a food insecurity. Not because of not having the money for it, but because shelves were getting wiped out. I was afraid that it would be like a third world country where you couldn't find any food. I was afraid I'd starve cause everything was running out. I know that is a bit dramatic, but I did have some negative feelings about everything and had no idea what to expect. We have all seen those movies about stuff like this that has happened. Unfortunately, some of those movies have come true in real life. Like you said, none of us have ever went through something like this before, so who knew what would happen? If there is a 2nd wave, then I will be prepared this time. If there is not one, then I won't have to buy food for a while. LOL. Great video and a great reminder of what may come.

From my POV, parents worked from home during the agrarian age or pre-industrial revolution laboring on the farms, engaged in chores for livelihood and survival. Most likely the majority of Americans had spaces within their homes, barns, sheds, etc. in which to do their work and also have care of the children who may not have attended school. Children may have been tutored at home or they learned applicable life skills by working alongside family members. I imagine how families being homebound during harsh winters might have felt. I guess that adapting to the circumstances was a big part of overcoming setbacks or possible depression. I'm thinking to myself: "Be prepared and hope for the best bc the outcome may be better than anyone expected!"⚖️🙏🕊️💚☀️🌈

We are now a one car household. My husband and I work together most days at a hospital. We felt guilty for taking 2 car parks at the hospital as much as the total expense of two cars. There are times it takes some negotiation of who gets to drive where, when but not so inconvenient that I want the costs to insure, service, put tyres on an extra car. In fine weather I choose to walk the 3.5 miles to work.

I have always kept a well stocked pantry so have not had a problem. I had 4-5 months of toilet paper and gave some to others. I have 25 pounds of beans, rice, lentils etc...I make my own laundry detergent. I have plenty of soap and dishwashing liquid. Always buy everything on sale. When I get a good deal get several. I would be ok for a while to survive. I eat a whole food plant based diet so like fresh fruits and vegetables but can used canned or frozen if needed.

Considering the economic situation and pandemic, stocking a pantry with sufficient water and food as well as supplies, is essential. Also, purchasing ahead of need, means money will be saved, because the price of food even if available is likely to sky rocket.Organizing important documents to grab if it is necessary to evacuate in a hurry. Keep vehicle gas tanks topped up, have extra oil, oil filters and wipers. There are many KZbin channels on prepping, I like Canadian Prepper, and Alaskan Prepper in particular.

Good video and practical list. I have made saving up an emergency fund and paying off debt a priority this year and have been slowly stocking up on some extra supplies this summer so I don't have to deal with any panic buying, etc. Make sure you have a plan for when the normal cold/flu season hits soon. I don't think a lot of people are realizing that we will all be expected to stay home more when we are sick with any type of cold/virus this year and not just Covid.

I live in New Zealand. We got through a strict lockdown earlier this year and "eliminated" the virus. We are now in a "resurgence" and part of the country has gone on lockdown lite while the rest of the country in in more strict social distancing and working from home where possible. Most people say the second time is harder mentally. I think the things I have been thinking about most is things to do at home to take our mind off being stuck here more. New things to do or things we need for projects in the house or garden. Then hand sanitizer/masks because the prices go up when the new "wave" hit. I'm also trying to get in supplies in bulk to last the rest of the year so if it gets really bad, we are only worried about fresh produce/milk and can make do with what we have on hand.

We’ve been a one car household for years. It’s easier now that we’re both retired. But we adjusted when it was he who was retired. I always keep extra in my pantry, freezer, and fridge. The only thing we felt with shortages was toilet paper and even that, we never ran totally out of it.

Tru earth has great laundry detergent, particularly if you don’t have a lot of space. It’s like pieces of thick paper that has very concentrated eco soap on it. You just add one strip to a full load. Tear it in half for half a load. I have about three years worth of detergent that takes up less than the space of a small book.

Second wave already starting here in the UK. My two person household has cash in the apartment in case we can't withdraw from the banks. Been stockpiling our favourite non-perishable foods gradually. Did a mammoth shopping trip to a big pharmacy for healthcare provisions. Bought painkillers from a variety of different stores to get more into our home faster (because here you can only buy two items containing paracetamol in one transaction). Never had a car, thus no car to sell. Have agreed to partial switch to reusable toilet paper, so less likely to suffer from running out of single use toilet paper. Feel like a hospital bag would be too much in the way to be worth having in our tiny flat. Buying bottled water here is insane to us, because we have great tap water, but I am considering investing in a water filter in case the water supply fails and can't be repaired due to covid. Or in case it we have to bug out due to looting/rioting near our city centre home. There's only need for one workspace in our home, and that was already in place, but at the start of lockdown I bought an electric back neck and shoulder massager, which has been fantastic for my partner's back since she has suddenly been working in a chair inferior to her chair at her office. And I have started growing potatoes. And I bought a bicycle in case our public transport system fails. I've become quite the prepper, all in all. Oh and we have twenty N95 face mask filters, and a number of cotton masks to put them in. Also gardening gauntlets and secateurs for foraging. And flour. And hand sanitizer. And matches. And gorrila glue tape. And super glue. And games so we don't go crazy. And very dark chocolate for my cravings. We still need a spare can opener, dish soap, laundry soap, and people soap. Can you think of anything else that might be missing from our household supplies? We are a two female adult household, no potential for babies, plenty of feminine hygiene supplies. Xx

Things such as a good Logitec webcam or Elgato Camlink 4K for video conferencing, contactless thermometer, pulse oximeter, lumber, and chest freezers are all still hit or miss when you try to find them locally or online. Every time I go to walmart or target, I look to see if there are any disinfecting wipes like clorox. I pick one up every time I see them. I'm pretty well stocked now, so if gets really bad again, it'll at least get me through this time.

Dana, I appreciate your advice. I would like your opinion on something. We are on a fixed income after all our regularly monthly bills are paid we are left with $500 to live off. This makes it difficult to save any more money. We have $15,000 and besides our small mortgage loan a small car payment. Would you use $7,000 of that $15,000 to pay off the car knowing it's not going to be easy to replace it?

Some states (like New York) have emerged from the first wave successfully but are in a holding pattern because other states didn't observe recommended protocols and COVID-19 is spiking and surging in those areas. As long as the White House's official policy now is that "everyone is going to get it anyway" and is actively dismantling systems designed to keep COVID in check until a vaccine is developed, we may see more than a second wave!
