Canadian born Martin Maltesen has spent years restoring this legendary Chevy DZ 302 cubic-inch to original specs using Wayne Guinn's book Camaro Untold Secrets. Martin chose only the best to assembly and tune the engine! We were happy to help him achieve goal!

In a world of L79s & LT1 engines, this mostly stock 302 has gotta be the most impressive small block ever. It's mind-blowing, I love it..
@stevejewell9263
@stevejewell9263 7 ай бұрын
Not really. The LT-1 350 is basically the same engine as a 302. All the same level of tech in it. More displacement but other wise the same engine tech throughout. The DZ302s only advantage is also it's disadvantage vs the LT1. The short stroke makes it potentially capable of little more RPM than the LT1 350 but that won't make up for the 350s higher torque, bigger HP and flatter curve across the RPM range. It's important to remember that the 302 wasn't a size chosen by Chevrolet as having any advantage vs something larger. It was simply a result of the 305 cu in limit in the Trans Am rule book for the class.

@@stevejewell9263 all in all the 350 LT1, 327 L79 and 302 DZ are all similar performance wise the way they left the factory. I never dyno tested an original DZ engine but the word is that it makes closer to 400 hp than it does to 300 like GM claims. I do understand why this engine came about, my point is that regarding the three engines I see a lot less of the 302 than I do the others (in person). There's no question that all three are legendary small blocks, anyone who had the pleasure of driving a car for the first time with either of the 3 engines when new were probably all blown away. Also, imagine how the car with the big block at the light next to a Z28 felt after that light turned green? And then finding out it was just a 302 CI engine...just a different perspective, that's all..

@@irocitZ A stock issued DZ302 probably made more than 300HP for sure. Cheverolet as much admits that by quoting the 290HP reading at 5,800. It's was far from a big secret that the motor could spin faster and it wasn't yet at it's peak when crossing the 5,800 mark. Peak power was found in 6,500RPM range. GM did this pretty often. They did the same with the race oriented L88 427 Big Block as well. Both engines share another trait. Time!! As time has past the racing stories and street car stories have merged. As often as I've heard people say the 302 made more than 290 and more like 400HP I've also head the L88 made more than the 430HP rating and it probably made more like 500-550HP. To which I say, "Nope!" Not in street trim they didn't not even close. I believe both inflated HP number stories come from the same misconception though. They share some truth and some embellishment due to time past. It's well documented that the Trans Am racers who took delivery of the 302 small blocks and the full on drag racing teams that took delivery of the L88 Big Blocks both immediately ripped those engines apart and went through them doing all they were allowed to in the rule book to make 'em better. Porting heads, intakes, working the carburaters and then doing headers and extension length tuned for the most power they could find and they were indeed getting 400HP out of the DZ302 and maybe even as much a 550HP out of that insane L88 427......... but for mere mortals with street cars, not nearly, so worked over.....no way they were getting these power numbers or anything remotely close to 'em in stock trim and full length street car exhaust systems. Yet, all of these stories are now 50 years back in time. So......small wonder the big numbers from race car efforts are what everyone quotes today as the real world street car performance, That may explain it but it sure doesn't make it so. Reasonable best guess for the stock 302 is power in the 330-350HP range and you spin the crap out of it to get there too. "PEAKY" is how I'd describe the '69 I owned back in the day. Not half bad at the drag strip but way down on power on the street at more reasonable in traffic RPM.

Yup. No way they go those numbers without a roller cam profile and heads worked to the MAX. As good as that horse power number is at 480HP the truly troubling number here is the sub-400Ft Pds of torque at a really high 5200RPM peak number of 395. Once again proving that this is the engine size MANDADTED in the Trans Am rule book and not the engine anyone should ever really want unless the rules prohibit anything larger. This engine is a great example of why the expression "no replacement for displacement" exists. Compare this 283 crankshaft stroke in a stock 350 bore, that makes it a 302 to what is way more common today, a 400 crankshaft stroke in the same 350 bore that makes the really popular 383. The short stroke engine makes power by screaming to nearly 8,000RPM and it takes a lot of really trick stuff to get there. The longer stroke 383 requires no super human effort to make as much or more horsepower at a more reasonable 5,500-6,000 RPM but where the bigger displacement really shines is in it's flat as Nebraska, broad torque curve that will show more 400FT PDs as low as 2,500 and carry that much and far more at it's peak going all the way to 5,000RPM before falling off. That's power a street car needs and uses vs a RACE CAR ENGINE that is represented really well by this tuned up 302. On a Trans Am race course you might never see anything bellow 3,500RPM for but a moment in a sharp corner on breaking and you'll spend most of the race wound out in the 5,000-7,000+ rpm range so a racer can do just fine with a 302 but on the street PEAKY is how I describe the 302 Chevy and super weak in the low and mid-range power. When you look at it this way it's easy to understand why only this one variant of the Camaro alone ever got this engine. Nobody should or would ever want it by choice unless they own a matching #s collectable Z/28 from '67-'69 it's pure race car stuff mandated by a rule book that limited these cars to 305cu inches or less. This is an engine that makes no sense in any street car vs the alternative choices that are just so much better you could make out of the super huge number of SBCs out there with a 4 inch bore.

The biggest problem is not the smokey ram intake, it's people not realizing it was not in any way shape or form a bolt on intake, rest assured it could and did make power far beyond a victor Jr The reason it did not sell well was most people that bought them did not have the tuning knowledge or experience to make it work What many people didn't realize is for it to work as Smokey designed it to work, it needed a specific Racer Brown cam Smokey Spec'd for it specific size primary tube and collector size & length headers, and stagger jetting the carb with these parts it was far superior to the cross ram and any intake for road racing purposes at that time, but just as this video points out it is the correct combination of parts for the intended use, well thought out and engineered to work together, more often than not poor performance is due to mis matched parts and lack of experience

No badging indicating Z-28 until I looked at the window sticker and popped the hood of the wrecked Z-28 that the transport driver crashed into a light pole in the process of loading the car on the transport trailer . Special order Z-28 and it had creosote pieces still in the fender of the highly optioned Camaro . Car sat a couple of stalls away from my stalls and sat there for several months and one morning it was gone , never could get info as to where the car disappeared to . Uploading a video about building a ''DZ302'' is a magnet for criticism, so many experts and historians, this alone make this venture an exercise self punishment. For this reason alone i've subbed the channel, not only for this video, but i'm hoping that maybe theres more footage on this build, i'd like to know more, like which fuellie head (or do others spell it ''fuelly'') is on that motor, (186 casting?), and is it still standard bore? What crank and rods are in it, all original gm? Maybe they mentioned these points and i missed it. I appreciate the intake and actually finding production # carbs, i recently ran into a friend who told me he ''got a holley at a garage sale'' for his street cruiser, when i saw the list # i went into an obvious state of shock, he couldnt understand my enthusiasm, i told him it was a carb off of a cross ram 302, he said he didnt know ford even put a cross ram on a 302......amazing. Look forward to this and other content in the future.

A friend bought a new 69 Z-28 and wanted to race is in a sports car race being held in a local park that was perfect for these type races . i tuned the Z-28 and it had a set of Mickey Thompson Super Scavenger Headers and it was an early production Z-28 with chambered exhaust and Firestone Sports Car 200 tires . Cops didn't like the Chambered Exhaust as it was loud . GM discontinued the chambered exhaust due to law enforcement complaints . I worked at a Chevy dealership and got my buddy in the parts department to get me all of the part numbers and prices to convert the Z-28 into race trim . The parts list and total price for the over the counter parts added up really quick and my buddy had the ok from his father that was going to bankroll the transformation . Only thing that killed the project was the fact that my buddy would be trading his Z-28 for an Econoline van . . Well so much for the Z-28 to get to road race , I would have been the driver as my buddy didn't have a clue as to how to drive a race car . A lot of really good race cars were in the race and it was exciting , doubt if we would have done very well but I would have done the best I could . We did get to practice in it's current set-up and damn it was a thrill . The park was closed at night and we would practice at night after the rent-a-cop was off duty . Burnt a set of tires off the Camaro and couldn't buy another set of the Sports Car 200 tires as they were limited production . Did a lot of street racing and won 99 out of a 100 races . The Camaro was sold when it was about a year old and the fool driving it and his four passengers attempted to beat a train at a road crossing and lost killing everyone in the Camaro .

You can buy a 1st gen garden variety survivor with faded paint and a Blue Flame 6 for relatively cheap and throw the 406 in there with aftermarket cylinder heads, solid roller cam and a 950XP Holley and run fast at the dragstrip, those lower value cars are where you go with the non-factory stuff. Were these engines ever capable of 9000rpm?
@stevejewell9263
@stevejewell9263 7 ай бұрын
HELL NO!! That said though. Every trick GM had at the time went into these engines. They got best of the bottom end parts you could get. Forged parts from the pistons on down to the crank. Free floating wrist pins too. The SLOW PISTON SPEED of the 302 was another big piece of the puzzle that allowed for high RPM use. Short strokes reduce the "snatch load" of each change in direction of the piston at the top and bottom of the stroke. It all adds up to a SBC capable of living with sustained high RPM use without bottom end failure. 9,000RPM though......no chance...... and it's not nearly so much because of a problem in the bottom of the engine as it is in the top. Valve train parts that could survive 8,000RPM+ need to be light weight, high strength and pretty exotic/expensive. These are pieces that won't be found in a Z/28 302. You could add 'em but now your a BIZZILION MILES away from "stock" or even a well done Trans Am racer of the late 1960s.

Where is the block casting number shown? If it ends in "010" it is 100% correct for 69 Z/28. The 010 block use started in April of 69 and ran through 1980- same casting as used on 350. As long as the car is April 69' build or later, the 3970010 is the right one. Other earlier castings were 3956618 and 3932388. My Jan and March cars both used the 618 casting.

@@jordangazaway5834 The longer you can hang on to torque the more HP you make up top. Torque + RPM = HP. Any short stroke engine will make lots of RPM because the piston speed slows the shorter the stroke. Double Hump heads needed a lot of work to perform but the potential was there. Trans Am racing made Z28s and BOSS 302s famous but rebuilds were numerous if you spun the street engine like you mention. That $100.00 trick was with a 427FE Cobra by the way.
