A couple of things. You can also say: "some days you are the dog and some days you are the fire hydrant" And jeeps count as AMC's until Chrysler bought it in the 80's. My 93 YJ Wrangler has AMC stuff all over it still. keep up the good work :)

If you end up rebuilding the engine, try swapping the crank with an 80s 258 Crank for a bit more stroke. Also the 80s Crank is lighter so it will spin over easier. The 70s 232 and 258 cranks have counterweights between every rod, and the 80s 258 only had three counterweights.

I like to retain the original fuel efficiency for daily driving and so don't normally increase displacement, and also value snow and mud traction and so don't increase engine weight in a Front engine RWD car. I disagree with "Cash for Klunkers" in that I believe building new cars pollutes more than running old cars, especially small old cars like this one, which don't suck huge amounts of gas. So I like reliable daily drivers like your service truck, that retain at least the original gas mileage and prevent people from building new cars, so better to flip them than collect them. Thanks again for the classic daily service truck! Far too many KZbin mechanics run modern service trucks and even modern dailies. There is a legit roll for nonclassic winter beaters in salt country, but that spray wax at the car wash helps that a great deal. I was most impressed when Thunderhead289 got 45 mpg's out of a 302 Maverick daily. That's what I want to see! I personally run the "hybrid beater" 3 cylinder Geo Metro, daily, now becoming a classic.

My brother bought a Gremlin new in 1972, same color. 5.0, 304 CID V8. 3 or 4 speed. Must have been a high gear, cause it would outrun almost anything on the road, up to 104 MPH. That was as fast as it would go, but get there quickly. Enjoy the fun you guys have. Cale's dry humor kills me.

Amazing content there Jacob, really digging your channel! As a fellow car enthusiast (from the old school) I wanted to say that it is impressive to hear a younger man speaking so eloquently about the passion and feelings the relationship with a car can inspire. I have always wondered how folks that don't care about cars go about enjoying anything in life. Memories and friendships are built around four wheels and an engine, there can be nothing greater in this world. This Gremlin is super cool, and considering it was taking a dirt nap just prior to your journey, i have say I have a new respect for AMC, seems like all the BS I hear about quality and reliability are completely false. Keep on rocking the wrenches Jacob.

Nah. Gremlins weren't always pieces of crap. That title wasn't bestowed upon them until the 1980's when the few survivors were REALLY clapped out and getting long in the tooth. But through the 70's, man, if you looked after your Gremlin - it held value WAY longer than any Vega, Pinto or Import did. The original owner of the Big Bad Green Gremlin (in my profile pic) LOVED her Gremlin. She kept it from the summer of 1970 through 1983. By that time it'd been hit in the front pretty lightly and was in desperate need of a new transmission and had well over 100,000 miles. The guy I bought the car off of in 2000.... has asked me a couple times now if he could buy it back! lol

@That_AMC_Guy
@That_AMC_Guy Жыл бұрын
@@SallysSpeedShop Oh heck yeah. If you saw a used Gremlin at a car lot after the OPEC embargo, it was generally priced a lot higher than the typical Vega, Pinto or even Maverick. Keep in mind, Pinto could only be a 4-cylinder car.... Gremlins had a 6. Vegas "silicone" engines self-destructed while AMC's tried and true six lived on. Pinto eventually got a bad reputation. And imports? Man, not only were imports MORE expensive back then but very few mechanics over here could keep them running properly. And if you needed specific parts, you had to wait weeks or MONTHS to get the stuff from Japan. AMC's "Buyer Protection Plan" covered every single part on the car for 12 months or 12,000 miles, excluding tires. So even if a light bulb burned out, the dealership would replace it free of charge.
