Love those old Cornbinders. Engines that seemingly run forever (even though they won't pass anything including a gas station). 727 Torqueflites are the best automatic ever built. MoPar race cars from the '60's and '70's will attest to that. Looks like a winner for a shop truck that's just a little different.

If it's a 727 makes sure you check it in NEUTRAL with the engine running. It will show fuller in Park than it actually is because of how the fluid is routed from the pump in the park position.

In the mid 70s I worked for a company that had Travelall with a 345 and a 1/2 ton with a 400. Both of them were powerful and long lasting but both of them were really thirsty, I mean really thirsty. I was working 100 miles away in about 1990 when I looked up to see the 1974, which the company had sold with over 100k on it in about 1980 going down the street. It had the shop logo on it still and although it had dents all over it I recognized it. That truck had torque that was phenomenal but it had two gas tanks for a reason

My Father had four different IH trucks two travelalls and two scout travelers Travelalls we're an 1110 and 1210 With 392 V8 and the Chrysler 727 Tork flight transmission Also had one in his old Dodge van that the hotrodders kept wanting to buy. Paid for the 1210 by selling the PTO wench Both could pull like a 🚜 tractor But the 1110 was actually better because of the lighter suspension let the truck squat down when pulling

I bought a 1968 1200C 4x4 that had been sitting in the woods for 30 years. It was an old fire department brush truck. Had 29K on the clock. 304 cubic inch that was stuck from sitting. Doused the cylinders with penetrating oil. Let sit for a week, then some more oil. Put 4 gallons of oil in, drained it. Then she broke free. Plugs , wires, rotor, cap , and points. Hooked up the boat tank and within a minute she was idling like a new truck! I really like those old trucks

Love the truck and the video of getting it running. Just a comment however that you don’t need to stop talking every time a car goes by on the road next to where you’re working. We can hear your voice over the road noise. Most of us watching are aware you are out working in real life situations not a sound stage. It may sound loud to you but if you are close enough to the mic or using a wireless mic the background noise does not over power your speaking. Just keep talking and forget its there. So many You Tubers make this same mistake and produce a video full of stops and starts.

Always check the starter for being loose, most people don’t have the correct tools to tighten the starter correctly. I’ve found many loose starters that damage the flex plate and most of the time you can just take a file and knock the burrs off the teeth from a loose starter.

@justinstearns9723
@justinstearns9723 2 жыл бұрын
The tanks sit under the cab, and usually the pickups had a filler neck on the back of the cab, like the trucks that had the tanks in the cab. The ones on the fender were usually auxiliary tanks. My 73 travelall has a 19 gallon main tank on the drivers side rear, and a 16 gallon auxiliary with the filler on the passenger side front fender. The auxiliary tank sits under the passenger side floor. Those rims are probably split ring rims, not quite as dangerous as the true split rims, but still touchy.

Those are hard to kill rigs and the 345 engine being the best one of all, that 392 was plagued with issues from the thermostat housing to crank problems. I have probably built a thousand engines through my shop and it was the only engine to ever give me grief. I would go with a standard transmission rather than go back with a automatic. There are other automatic trans besides the 727 torque flight transmission and had a few with hydromatics. You can raise holly hell with one of those and still get home and they run cooler without the "special dodge" fluid that kept them going. I do guess you knew that tho right, dodge takes its own fluid and will die shortly if you even mix it as for some reason it balls stuff up and leaves the bands in the pan.
@justinstearns9723
@justinstearns9723 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve heard of some cooling issues with 392s, but never crank issues. Cam bearings are the main weak point on all SV engines, 266, 304, 345, and 392. As far as I’m aware of no IH ever used a Hydramatic transmission. Prior to using the 727 starting in about 1973, they all had Borg Warner automatics.

In a perfect world, I'd win that swapped Intl. Scout, & trade you for the old school pickup - I've owned MoPars, GM, even a handful of Fords (Mistakes exc. for the '70 Van), so a real International would be fun. Guess I'll have to love it from afar. I hope you go for the home rebuild on the trans - if the case isn't porous or otherwise damaged, a kit should make it right as rain. Then you could take a look at the brakes - I think the RF one either drags or locks up before the other 3.

I would suggest replacing the transmission with a 4 speed OD unit for better mileage and lower rpm at highway speeds. If budget allows a fuel injection change over would make it modern daily driver. Keep up the good work.
