I did some tinkering with the Free Rig a couple years ago but never a lot. I primarily used craw style baits around cypress trees and it definitely got bites in pressured areas. At the time I did use spinning gear, but it was a 7’ MHF spinning rod. I also used 15# leader and used much tighter drag for the EWG hooksets. I liked the idea of the spinning gear for how freely the line comes off the spool. To me it would SEEM that on almost all casting gear the lure would still pendulum back towards you more so than with the free spooling nature of a spinning reel. Especially when fishing vertical cover, I wanted the presentation to fall as straight as possible to the base.

Floating baits have worked the best for me. One of my favorites that I crush on from the back of the boat when my buddy in the front can't get bit is one of those Berkeley waterbugs. Zmans finesse worms are great too.

Been fishing a free rig for 3 years , one thing I recommend is use the most sensitive rod you own because sometimes when the bait is on the fall it gets inhaled and if you don't feel the bite immediately and start reeling the slack you will gut hook the fish , the fun thing about it is experimenting with different baits , I have tried almost every type of bait , my favorites are a Biospawn Vile Tube, Big Bite Baits Fighting Frog, Xzone Adrenaline Crawl, Geecrack Bellows Gill, Deps Bullside, I use a tungsten cylinder weight and #14 sunline FC Sniper

I free rig fish a bunch. Been doing it for around 2 years. The baits like the honey nugget will definitely out perform conventional Texas rig baits. Flat sided bats is what you want. Deps bull flat, Geecrack bellows shad, and bottom up gimme are 3 baits that were specifically designed for the free rig. Awesome baits for the presentation.

I’ve been fishing a trick worm on this but flat craws work great too. But… I snell knot the hook. Gives it a little kick up when hook meets the slider and protects the knot as well. To me any little bit helps.

I have caught a few small mouth on similar rig using a cylinder weight instead of tear drop….definitely works better due to the varying depths it can be fished and still have that “flowing” free style.

The hottest part of the summer I was throwing one with a rage bug and a big ribbon tail worm as the plastic and was getting bites when bites where really hard to get down here in the south. I threw it a little bit through the fall and caught them again. Haven't really tried it this winter but if I had to guess with a rodent or pit boss it would catch them again. It's been a pretty cool technique and becoming one of my favorites.

And there is a man I know that went prefishing a tournament and was using a gold crappie hook with a bubblegum color strait tail worm and he basically was wacky worming but they called it something else back then, I forgot what. But he had a pink work with a flat tail hooked in the bubble in the middle of the worm. He caught a 12+# giant.

I use the Free rig all the time! Especially in pads and the edges of vegetation. Try using something Bouyant like a Zman GOAT or wacky rigged. Then the weight can stay stationary on bottom and the bait can go up and down multiple times.

I been fishing the free rig for over 3 years. I like to fish the techniques of Japanese as their ways are new to the bass here in the states. The free rig to me is best for lethargic bass. It gives the bass a free kick up without feeling that lead or tungsten.

I'm curious on the best ways to work it. Do you drag it, hop it or pick it up high off the bottom. The Rojas fighting frog will float a 5/0 hook on top of the water, how do you think that would work for bedding fish?

I really like the Free Rig and believe it gets more bites than a T-Rig most of the time. It’s not good around brush piles though. I also like the EWG hooks with the welded ring. It does make the bait free-er to move and I think it gets more bites.

No i dont think it will take the place of a texas rig. First the weightless texas rig is more widely used as yoi metioned but the texas rig is more versatile over all. The free rig has its place but cant be fished in some places a texas rig can be. If you really think about it flipping cover is a pegged texas rig even though some call it a flipping rig. Texas rigs didnt start out with a ewg or offset worm hook they used a straight shank hook like a flipping hook. The free rig cant be fished in heavy cover or in brush very well but the texas rig can. Ive also had issues with it in thicker under water grass flats where the texas pr Carolina rig both came through no problems. When the bait was flowing free fall spiral and the weight had already reached the bottom the line got wrapped in the thicker grass. Theres a place for both and in some situations showing something different has its advantages but i still think the texas rig is more versatile on the long run. From weightless to free flowing to pegged and every soft plastic can be fished on a texas rig but the free rig needs a floating or slow sinking soft plastic.

It's different in that the weight is stopped from sliding all the way down to the bait on the C-rig. And you drag a C-rig where I think you hop a free-rig more so it glides down to the bottom repeatedly.

Tyler, not telling you how to promote or do business. But when saying the video is brought to you by my apparel company.....that sounds a lil off. Just say this video is brought to you by finn fishing and the bass hat.... Promote it as if you are promoting another company and not yourself. Think of John crews. He doesn't say my company missile baits... He just says missle baits... It just sounds better and puts a different picture in a person's head. When you are partnering with other companies however it's perfect to pitch it like you do now. But wording things differently will make the viewer feel more connected and make them feel more like hey....this Tyler guy is like me just a poor ole boy tryna make it thru life.... It's all about that feeling of were all just alike. The consumer wants to feel like the supplier isn't just a big corporation but hard working everyday folks. And I know you are a hard working everyday guy. Not saying don't be absolutely proud of your brands and accomplishments. Just word things slightly different to make a huge impact on sales and connecting with the general public. God bless and love ya big dawg. Keep working hard every day it does not go unnoticed.
