I'm a wood furniture repairman in the midwest and I have to tell you how impressed I am with your ability, talents and gumption. Not only are you very competent at your craft, but your filming, editing and narration are quite amazing. The depth of the content of your videos, in which you evaluate and comment on the tools and materials you purchase and use are incredibly useful for me and I'm sure many others. Your's has become my favorite KZbin channel. I've been repairing furniture for many years and, at 72, I'm grateful to say I'm still learning.

When you made the statement you weren’t going to do any more to the chair than what the customer wanted and then continued on finding more and more problems, I just smiled and was thinking that chair is going to get a make over, no way you were going to let it out of your shop half done. The tutorial on structural integrity of a piece was excellent. The whole project was well executed. Thank you.

I am impressed with your ambition to take on the more difficult projects. I really appreciate that you include problems encountered along the way. (i.e. the thin wall PVC pipe sag). Hi Trena, I watched you repair the chair that you steamed the board and bent the wood around your chair top rail. I thought using the plastic tube was very creative and it worked great. The people that would criticize you are the people who know everything and probably never could do what you do. Keep doing it, I have learned so many things from your show. Thank you. Jeff

I loved the way how you were uninterested about this project in the very first minutes, as you were listing all the things that needed repairing, almost indifferent weather it would end up in the trash or not. And then you started to work on the first thing and right there you told yourself I can't let this be this way and your dedication started to show with every step of the way. And when you were finally done with the bending you became proud of what you did and you could see the finish line and you had that in mind till the end. It turned out beautiful and strong I'm sure! Great job!

I agree that a complete teardown and rebuild would be the best thing to do for the chair but keeping all the bumps, lumps, and scratches, are where the memories are. Your customer may have put most of those blemishes there as she played as a toddler with her daddy. My wife and I visited her childhood home to find some of her "treasures" in a 'cast out' pile. With the new owner's permission, we salvaged some of those "treasures" in pretty rough shape. You do amazing work!

What an amazing restoration. I've never seen a chair with the metal rods like that before. I would have assumed they were just part of some previous botched repair job but neat to know they are just part of the design. I'm glad your client was able to come around to having the chair refinished more but retain the character. I can see them wanting to retain the chair 'as it is' because of the memories, but being able to sit and enjoy the chair for years to come will generate more memories and appreciation for the life of the chair than having it be in terrible shape and not really usable. Thank you for sharing these videos, really enjoy your process and seeing your amazing results.

I know this is an old video but sorry Trena, “I just can’t leave well enough alone” (your quote) as you decided to take the seat off and properly glue and re-sand! I was in fits of laughter as I was thinking the same, I couldn’t leave the seat that way either! It would bother me to send it back to the client knowing it wasn’t completely,100% perfect, nor structurally sound in the seat area. You are a quality craftsperson and balk at doing a half job! I love your honesty and integrity and as I always say, am totally engrossed in your videos til the end. Fantastic job and hope the client appreciates all the extra work. 🤗🇦🇺

What a fantastic job! When I started watching, I had serious that would bend that as a solid piece. I thought sure that you would need to do that rail as a laminated piece. I was also impressed with how you selected and mixed colors to get a fairly decent match. I have been into woodworking on and off for about 50 years. In that time, I have managed to steer clear of chair work, and know that the best way to ruin an otherwise good project is to stain the wood. Trying to repair a piece and get the colors to even come close is where the skill set changes from craft to art. You demonstrate both to a high level.

Windsor chairs, I’ve made many many and if you’d have been in a position to do many of these bends, then as you said you’d have made improvements to your form to keep the bent piece on the table and even clamping holes in your form. What an amazing set of skills you have, especially in matching tones of finishes. How many hours did that piece take? I’d love to do restoration work like that but I don’t see people in my area being willing to support that kind of work.

I think you might be surprised. If someone loves something and you have the skill to return it to glory, price isn’t always a factor, to a point. This chair took me over a week to complete. Not sure on the hours as it has a lot of time just sitting in the form and clamps and drying. Cheers!

Have a look at EnglesCoachShop videos of bending. He has a steel box and applies some pressure as a well as steam to bend kiln dried ash.

For the bending phase, I like the technique where there are strategically drilled holes in the table and you drop thick dowels in as you progress.

I was thinking of doing that. But just didn’t. It looks like a good idea though. Cheers!

I use the medal vent piping tube things from the box store. The 4” or whatever it is that vents from the kitchen to outside. I use high temp tap to secure the joints. Works perfect for bending. Love your videos!

Trena, have you ever tried using steel hose clamps to clamp a dowel or when you have a break or fracture on a bias? I use them often in my shop and they seem to work very well.

Im glad you used your own initiative and redid the sea and refinished it, sparingly. I know the owner will be pleased.

Proper job Trena! There is a steaming trick using a long plastic bag that I have seen on "Tips from a Shipwright" and "Acorn to Arabella", because it is flexible you can keep the steam going whilst coaxing the timber to shape.

Once i started watching, i had to watch the whole video, even at 2X speed. It is addicting. I am sure you enjoyed doing it. Amazing work. My opinion is to reinforce the new curved piece with a curved steel plate underneath it, with holes for the pillars etc. It is the piece that gets the most stress. Maybe then it will last forever.
