A town in Texas lost all of their illegal workers at Tyson Chicken. They were replaced immediately by locals at half the manpower and double the pay with benefits. I work at a factory where over half the workers don't speak English very well if at all, and it's a NIGHTMARE of incompetence. The supervisors simply can't train the people that HR is hiring, but they can't get more citizens hired in because they don't want to pay them what they deserve. So the result is people who are poorly trained and working for lower wages make the job more difficult for the rest of us. If half our workforce were deported, the company would be forced to increase wages to get American citizens to fill those roles, which would absolutely raise the quality of our work because at the very least, we could actually effectively train new employees.

@BasedGodFlashy21 күн бұрын
You're playing with words using non-citizen instead of illegal immigrants specifically because non-citizens are people here legally that are not citizens yet and there aren't that many of those here. Most of the people in this discussion are illegal immigrants specifically and they don't even qualify for Section 8 at all. The answer isn't removing the non-citizens legal status and deporting then it's building more Section 8 housing and building an economy with good paying union jobs so that you don't have to be on Section 8.
@connorgaskill765321 күн бұрын
@@BasedGodFlashy You're right, illegal is a better term. The problem is that various states do not check residency very well and don't account for duplicate/fake social security numbers (WA is so bad we need separate federally compliant "enhanced IDs"/passports to fly). We need to severely limit section 8. Section 8 is the reason why housing prices are so high. Local governments zone all new plots as "low income" and never allow any plots to be built for working people. This drives up the cost of living and promotes blight. When I was a teenager, my mom lost her job and requested section 8. We were told it would be a least 2 years. Meanwhile, one of her friends (who was illegal) got section 8 even though they were laid off at the same time, from the same place, and my mom had more kids. Hispanic outreach programs encourage systematic discrimination against white families and disproportionately help illegal immigrants.

That's exactly what a tariff does tho I'd ur product is now 20% higher (which the government takes to use inefficiently as you pointed out btw) the local company has room to exist because the competition is no longer fair. In some instances this makes sense say medicine, food, energy, microprocessors yeah that makes sense but blanket tariffs are dumb because a lot of stuff made in those places still wouldn't be logical to move here the labor cost is just to vast. They will move to a country we didnt tariff and just make it there several companies have already said that's what they will do like black and decker for example. I think woody and hutch are forgetting that it's not an all or nothing game. Free trade does increase growth for everyone however eventually someone will be the head of the pack in an industry and so long as that country is stable and friendly it's fine but if they collapse or diplomacy fails that nation will be at the mercy of the other. It's why even through most countries don't need farming if they supplemented with trade it's important to keep a certain amount of vital industries within your own boarders. Tariffs in the short term help you get ahead but the solution to not become a soviet union or russia was solved in the 1850s. Japan basically gave a few decades for their industries to improve and slowly weened them onto the market to maintain competition while not collapsing their industry, something as simple as that gives you the best of both worlds.

Also because everything is made in America again. Inflation goes down and the value of your dollar goes up.

I have zero faith in US companies raising wages. Any time profits become an issue they raise prices and lower raises for employees. Meanwhile the executives get massive bonuses year after year. The idea of bringing back American manufacturing is great and I'd love to see it. However, the wages required to produce those goods means the price of the goods will be significantly higher than right now. The automotive industry sent production overseas for this reason many years ago. Between OSHA requirements and benefits package costs, most companies can't afford to switch their entire workforce to be domestic. I've worked blue collar, production setting jobs my entire life. Every year it's a struggle to get even a cost of living raise because customers don't want to see prices go up and executives want to keep their profits up for shareholders. If all the materials we use are being tariffed at 25% there is no way to maintain profits without denying raises or raising prices by at least 25%.

The amount of money tied up in college debt is wild. A large portion is making zero payments until the 2040’s, which means the country is coddling a significant portion of our work force. That portion isn’t working or certainly isn’t working in a field that justifies having 100k of debt. The idea is we are going to float multiple generations of college students so they can be successful later on. Yet many of them don’t ever take jobs related to what they went to school for.
@bobbybalogne256521 күн бұрын
What a terrible take. Us companies suck at raising wages. Look at the cost of goods being produced vs what people make creating those goods. It doesn’t track. And not everyone will have manufacture jobs. Stuff will be more expensive

What would be the point of having a valuable dollar when you don't import goods/services and make everything at home? What about all the cool and high value things people could spend their time making like cars and spaceships rather than having to fill lin as labour on a farm picking strawberries? People are not going to be altruistic. If you pocket that 80 grand, why would you spend twice as much on anything if you can just buy for half the price overseas? After a short time all US businesses would go bankrupt, and whoops there goes your 80k/year. Ban imports completely and see how much of a nuisance the cartel on the southern border would be realizing they could make 10x what they do now trafficking basic consumption goods. I'm sorry bro, but your idea will not work.

@kirby747521 күн бұрын
Inflatiion is a price increase. It doesn't matter where or what the price increase came from. Although usually the strongest contributing factor, printing money is just one of several ways you can cause inflation. Inflation can exist in isolated sectors of the economy (and usually does). Without making a dent into general inflation. General inflation (which you're thinking of) is the sum of price increases in the sum of all markets. Tarriffs are inflationary for the price of the product you're putting a tariff on. I.e it increases the price of said product. Therefore tariffs, the more general they are, contribute to inflation.
@hughgrection305221 күн бұрын
@kirby7475 I mean all sorts of semantics have been applied to the term over the eons. Mostly by politics. Factors that's used to be simply called supply and demand, capitalism etc, are now factored into it all and now called _inflation_ . But the real true definition of what drives it is when too much of the currency is printed.

The argument about our economy relying on taroffs before income tax is so foolish. We also had way more rampant poverty and our recessions lasted longer and were more frequent. We also didn't have the most popular programs our country ever had in Social Security and Medicare. Tariffs will not even come close to covering the cost of these or any of our other programs to help people in need. With tuat being said, the best period of our countries' history was also not complete laissez-faire zero tariff free trade neoliberalism either it was somewhere in the middle of the two extremes during the New Deal era. Hutch is being ridiculous with this pro NAFTA and even pro TPP crap its like he doesn't recognize that Democrats have historically been WAY more opposed to these free trade deals than Republicans and the votes in Congress can prove this. For NAFTA there were 38 votes in the Senate against it and 28 were Democrats and in the House there were 200 votes against it and 156 were Democrats. For CAFTA in the Senate there were 45 votes against it and 33 were Democrats and in the House there were 215 votes against it and 187 of them were Democrats. Even in 2018 whwn Trump was talking about putting tariffs on China it was Democrats who were supporting him not Republicans. Chuck Schumer is on video praising the idea. There were articles on Trump getting support from Democrats on tariffs on China. Hutch is on the side of corporate Democrats being mandated out. www.businessinsider.com/trump-china-tariff-democrats-praise-gop-slams-2018-6

It's been my experience personally that people that don't want you to protect yourself are people that are actively seeking to harm you. Lower cost goods are fine and all, but it doesn't matter if I'm barely making enough money to afford those lower cost goods. In that case I'm just accepting a diminishing standard of living where I can still barely afford inferior products. Kyle and Taylor are correct that the purpose of protectionist policy is to come to a more fair medium. I don't want free trade. I want fair trade. The president of China is looking out for the Chinese. If the POTUS is also looking out for the Chinese then there's no one left to look out for American citizens, which should the the first and foremost priority of all members of US government.

So how will increased (supposedly) wages cover for the increase in prices that follows? You'd still be stuck in the same rut. That's assuming your boss won't fire you because your position in the company is now to expensive to keep.
@ezmackgaming21 күн бұрын
@@bobbybalogne2565 Goods aren't getting cheaper though. They just get more expensive at a slower rate. Having an inflationary economic policy ensures that goods will continue to get more expensive while wages stagnate domestically. When Trump was Pres. gas was under $2/gal, now it's over $3/gal currently meaning $10/hr working then would get more gas than $15/hr does currently. As for "why don't you get a better job?" lets say I have a $15 per hour job and leave it for a $20 per hour job. The new employer might be wary of hiring someone who jumps from job to job. Now if I leave that $20 per hour job for a $25 or $30 per hour job. That employer would likely be even more skeptical of hiring someone who bounces from job to job, even if that were their recommendation to someone who wanted higher pay or to better afford things in lieu of a raise. Ultimately "just get a better job" becomes a catch 22 where you have to leave a job because they don't give adequate raises and prospective employers are wary because they think you'll leave after a short period. This would of course become a self fulfilling prophecy if the new employer doesn't give adequate raises. The better solution would be for employers to give their employees raises or promote from within.
@ezmackgaming21 күн бұрын
@@kirby7475 A lot of what this does is replace jobs that people typically say "aren't real jobs"(retail, grocery, fast food, restaurants etc.) with "real jobs"(manufacturing etc.) that pay higher wages, but don't necessarily require a college degree. This allows the jobs that are "not real jobs" to be filled by teenagers and retirees like the people that like to call them "not real jobs" suggest and provides an entry point into a higher income bracket that doesn't necessarily require a college degree. Not having an abundance of blue collar jobs contributes to a lot of the problems America is facing( housing unaffordability, student loan debt).

I hear a lot of examples why tariffs are good, but no one can give an example of it going bad....
@kirby747521 күн бұрын
-Corn laws, 1815-1846 -Smoot-Hawley tarriff Act, 1930 -Japan's tariffs on american cars in the 70s & 80s. -Trump's 2018 tariffs, resulting in US farmers' loss of matketshare, requiring billions of dollars in agricultural subsidies, funded of course by the government, AKA your taxes. Tariffs, as these examples show, can create domestic wealth inequality, hurts both domestic producers and consumers, hurt industry competitiveness, increase inflation, etc. That's just a few examples, I could list 5 more off the dome if I wanted to. Fact is tariffs, for economic purposes, do not work. For anyone. Tariffs can be useful in terms of national security, by protecting certain vital industries like military equipment manufacturers, environmental disaster protection/detection tools and so on. But strictly economically speaking, tariffs are a useless meme policy.

Saying that getting rid of 20 million people will cause inflation is the most ignorant statement I’ve ever heard. There is no logical basis for that. Less demand doesn’t make prices for goods to go up. It does the opposite. Demand down with steady supply = prices go down. wtf hutch. 🤦♂️😂😂😂
@renabshire470421 күн бұрын

@bobbybalogne256521 күн бұрын
It’s not demand going down. Do you have a brain. It’s supply going down.
@kirby747521 күн бұрын
You're halfway there. You gotta keep in mind that yes demand will go down, but not as much as deficit in production rises. This is because those 20 million, largely, do not earn anywhere near the average american salary, and therefore constitute a much, much smaller sample of overall consumption. Yet stand for the vast, vast majority of production in certain industries. In other words, the net loss in production far outpaces the net loss of demand. And you know what happens then? You guessed it, prices go up. I'm sorry, but your assumption that supply (production) will stay the same has even less of a logical basis to stand on.
