I find it funny that people would have an issue with this. You're on camera in the grocery store. You're on camera at the gas station. You're on camera on the highway. You're on camera at the bank. You're potentially on camera on any private property you step onto. Why would someone else's car be any different..?

This is easy because a huge part of the marketing is that Uber/Lyft are fun and carefree. It's not like the grocery store. The grocery store is boring and even if you like it it's tiring. A ride can be much more fun and more. It's more like a date with friends or whatever you need it to be (some people need to rest after a long day at work) but a date w friends is best example. What if you and your friends were all recording each other because you didn't trust each other? It's just weird. Part of friendship is trust. A huge part of Uber is that you can have fun with and trust a local driver who might go to your college or live down the street. If you both WATCHED each other when you bumped into each other rather than had a normal human connection that would be weird...so Uber/Lyft are trying to promote natural and healthy human connection not surveillance-communism or a third party creepy-stalker-like computer watching your every step. It's creepy having cameras record you just like it's creepy having another human watch you through a window. It's the same feeling.

@@Myspiritualrhythm no one with an ounce of common sense blindly trusts anyone else… Uber/Lyft/etc. don’t discourage any of their drivers from having a camera and it’s often used to settle complaints and disputes, so an obliviously fantastical overtrusting uncaring attitude towards reality is certainly not part of their marketing.

Like so many others, here in "the D", it's totally cool. I have my 1080p Dash Cam pointing directly into my minivan, getting full view of everything that goes on in the vehicle, and most of the time (especially at night), pax don't even notice it (although I have a black and white written notice that it's in use in a clearly visible place in the vehicle). If they DO notice it, they say, "Oh, that's smart. Bet that keeps people in line." or something similar. Most pax know it's basically for liability purposes and to stop perps from getting any bright ideas. **Peace out to the Uber Drivers of Detroit! - JD.

After driving for 5 months and getting marked off on ratings for NO REASON I am going to buy a camera to protect me on ratings.If I really screw up on navigation then mark me down but taking the standard rte every driver has taken to the airport from your neighborhood for the last 20 years is not screwing up on navigation. If you wanted to go the long way around on the freeway you did not say anything. Or if I do something unsafe like turn left onto a one way street then mark me down but other wise stfu and be on your way. I got paid $2.62 for your ride and no tip, I loaded and unloaded your groceries. I treated you with dignity and respect, now get on with your life. Do not then turn around and say I was unprofessional. With a camera this will not happen. And if it does, I have proof I behaved in an appropriate manner

I've been driving with my dashcam for about 3 or 4 months now. Im part time so maybe 200-300 rides in that time. I've had maybe 10 riders ask me about it. I tell them that I drive a lot of late night hours & there are a lot of drunk people out doing stupid stuff at 2AM so I feel safer with it. I tell them it loops about a week's worth of driving & I hope I never have to pull anything off it, but I feel like someday I might be really glad I have it. So far that's put most of my riders at ease. I've had 2 ask if I post to KZbin, which I don't. I've only had 1 rider tell me he did not consent & imply that he did not want to be recorded. I told him that Video is protected by the first ammendment & that Texas is a 1 party consent state for audio & that I already consented. It was a quiet ride after that. He didn't end the ride, but I wouldn't be surprised if that 1 rider gave me a lower rating. The rest of my riders have been fine with it & I feel like the 5-10 that could have complained were fine after I explained why I had it.

New Uber soon to be new Lyft driver. I am amazed that people are more worried about a 5 star rating than protecting yourself, your vehicle, your family, your reputation, and (oh by the way) the passenger who is questioning you about the camera. In this country, right now, you are guilty until proven innocent when it comes to he said/she said situations (with accidents or your passengers). I could care less about my 4.97 rating (lol, only driving 5 days). All someone has to do is call the police and say you touched them inappropriately...your life is hell from that day forward. I'm learning a lot, by watching these vid's. Thank you. I have stopped driving until I get a cam up and running. Thx driver in AZ.

That’s what I heard from an attorney that was riding with me. She said it deters bad behavior. Thanks for the info on policies, as I just had a passenger say we can’t have one. 🙄 nice try, dude. He may have rated me lower. Usually when people notice it, they just tell me how cool it is and ask questions, like am I required to have one. I just answer their questions, and they’re usually cool with it. I’ve had my cam for about 2 months now, and only one person complained about it. Don’t like it, get out, dude. 😇

That's awesome, Katie, nice job. I know here in California, you do have to put a sign notifying passengers that you're recording audio/video, so you might just want to check in to your state's laws, but overall I'd rather be safe (with dash cam evidence) than sorry!

The Rideshare Guy Thank you! I am in California as well. I was looking online, and the only thing I’ve seen is that we have to let them know they’re being recorded if the camera has audio, as mine does. I agree-better safe than sorry. I don’t have a sign yet, but the attorney didn’t mention anything about me not having one. the guy that complained was after her, so I wasn’t particularly worried about asking, as I haven’t had anyone else that complained about it. Thanks again and good luck out there.

I've had my dash cam for about 6 months and I get asked two things, The first is if I post the videos on KZbin which I reply no its only for passenger/driver safety. I also get asked to turn it off and 90% of those people get out. I informed Uber that I have a dash cam and if passengers do leave because of the dash cam my rating is not effected.

I have two GoPro cameras I use in my car as dash cams. I often get people that ask me about them, because they are in plain sight. Some even think I'm a cash cab. So I'll roll with it for a bit and then tell them I'm just kidding and how it's for my safety as well as yours. That then sometimes opens conversation about the Taco bell guy. For the ones who think I'm a cash cab, I start asking them random trivia questions.

I just started using a dash cam about a week and a half ago. I took an old phone and an app off the app store and mounted it on the windshield pointing out. Since I don't drive at night I'm not too worried about what goes on behind me in the car. When asked I tell riders that I use it in case of an accident to document any traffic problems that caused the accident. Several months ago while on a ride I stopped at a traffic light and someone ran in the back of me. Had I had the dashcam it would have shown clearly that I was fully stopped at the stoplight before I got hit. Even though it only points out it could be helpful in case of a recless driver in front of me or outside criminal activity as in the case just this past week where a Lyft driver was shot and killed along with the passenger being shot & wounderd while on a ride in Cleveland. Today I do not believe they have apprehended the shooters. Had there been a dash cam in that drivers car it might have recorded who did the shooting. For safety sake I also have an app on my phone that monitors the police department so I may be aware of any criminal activity that I may be driving into. I feel it's always nice to know if you're about to turn into a street where there's a SWAT Team having a shootout with criminals. Today's I've only had one person complain about it most people find it to be a logical things that have in the car considering the crime rate in Cleveland Ohio.

I have a sign hanging from the back of my seat as well as one on my dash that informs of audio and video recording is taking place. I am in California which if I understood correctly, is a "two-part consent" state. One may refuse the audio (?) but they have no say about video. Last night I had some guy ask me if I was a filmmaker and why was I recording. I said it is a dashcam...why am I recording...you know, for insurance, safety, accidents...I said I can turn the audio off if you want. He asked if I could turn it around, and that he "wouldn't do anything". I said I still need it for accidents etc or he can request another ride. I had already accepted the trip and moved about 30 ft before he had started in on this btw. He made some comment about giving a low rating if I didn't do it. What a dick. I hate doing late night party nights. I gave him 1 star and am leaving it up to Uber CS to charge or not to charge him anything on my fare review request. This has taught me to wait even longer before accepting a trip so the idiots can read (& to put a light on the sign directing their attention since they probably couldn't find their asshole if you gave them a flashlight, a compass, a doctor guide, and detailed instruction manual).

The Falcon F360 has the best interior video quality of the ones we've tested, but it's not great. Most dashcams use loop recording to overwrite old footage - a 32gb SD card is big enough to hold the last 3-6 hours of footage depending on the camera. Check out Jon's video reviews here: therideshareguy.com/the-most-epic-dashcam-review-for-rideshare-drivers-ever/ We've got a review of another dashcam coming up soon, so look out for that too :)

Great Video! I have some questions. Let's say a dash cam with 32 GB SD card can record about 8 hours or so continuously, if you are driving more than 8 hours, 1. do you record the entire day or only start recording after you accept a ride request and end it when you drop off the pax? 2. Do you keep extra SD card in case your day is running longer and your 1st card is full but you wanted to make sure everything is recorded? 3. How long do you keep the recorded video after the ride is over (I guess in other words it can to decide how many cards will I need)? Thank you so much and would really appreciate if you could share some your thoughts.

I let the camera just record at all times. I think the video is more for major incidents - ie if something happens that you'd need video evidence, you'd know it and keep the vid. Know what I mean?

I have a 32GB memory card in my dual dash cam. On medium settings it records about 30-40 hours of driving for me. So far I haven't had any incidents I felt I needed to save, but if I wanted to document *everything* to be able to refute a false claim later, I think I would just get a second microSD card, swap them after each session, backup that day's drives to the cloud, and then maybe delete those a year or two later.

I recently bought a dash camera and use it while driving Uber. Three days after using it, a rider complained to Uber that I was not using a face mask. I had the recording on and wanted to give it to Uber to show I was wearing my mask. They didn’t want to hear it and lower my rating of 4.97 to 4.96 . I waited to finish this week and have been without driving for Uber for the last 5 days due to this disrespectful attitude from Uber.

@242HP7 жыл бұрын
Not sure I'd use the explanation "Oh you wouldn't believe the shit that goes on back there". It's YOUR vehicle, and if you don't like what any of your passengers is doing in your car, you need to let your passengers know that. If you don't want people to smoke, drink or eat in your car, tell them that at the start of the trip, or buy stickers like cab drivers have that you can place on the car windows or elsewhere that say that. I won't tolerate any behavior that I find unacceptable in my car, and I'll tell my passenger that if necessary. I also won't accept more passengers than the vehicle is designed to carry (3 in back, 1 in front). If people try to squeeze in more passengers than that, I'll tell them that they'll have to request a larger vehicle.

Uber and Lyft should make having a dashcam mandatory now, after the Denver incident. If they can force you to keep a gun out of your car, they should force you to have a dashcam, for your own good. That poor guy in Denver (Hancock) is now legally screwed. Even if the jury finds him innocent, his bank savings and reputation are ruined. All of that could have been prevented with a dashcam.

2 Q's I haven't found answers to yet, (although you have answered at least a1000 for me already - THANK U). #1: I am curious about pax that might love being on you tube! Is there an obvious reason, I haven't heard yet, why you couldn't have a literal version of Cash Cab going on with a dash cam and a select pax excited to play and then watch themselves on a YT channel later? Obviously it would be the rare ride where it would be long enough, have the right person, with the right rapport, but if you could clear the legalities quickly, (having them give permission in video, for ex), would it cause issues, or get you deactivated? Also, could you offer, say a $5 gift card to uber... amazon....whatever....(purchased by driver), & include the yt channel where they can see themselves later, on it? The content could be worth the small giveaway, if done right, but would it be worth it, given how Uber, insurance and the laws, ect. would see it?) *I keep figuring that this is an obvious one that I just haven't connected all the details of yet, and I doubt its' viability within the platform, but I am dying to know if it could be done!* #2: I am an Artist, and I have a gallery app on my on-board nav system. Sometimes I run my Uber app through it, sometimes not, because it can get stuck, or jumpy with a connection, and I have a large phone, mounted where pax can see, for navigating the route, anyway. When I'm not running the Uber app through my screen, would I be asking for trouble if I had a slideshow of images of my paintings rolling on the screen it instead? (It doesn't get stuck on THOSE...lol.) The idea would be for someone to ask about them...not to show them as an ongoing ad, with my name or info added to the images, but, then IF asked, have a card ready to give with my website listed, where they could be purchased. It just seems like such a waste of a perfectly good screen sometimes.) I hope these make sense. I am an Uber-newber, so if you have answered those before, I apologize, and please point me to them. Your channel has been my Uber study-guide, and I greatly appreciate it - really GREAT WORK!

1: Ya I think uberman is doing something like this right now - check it out. 2: No I think that's a cool idea but you may want a second phone for it so you can still navigate on the primary phone.

George, according to Google New Jersey is a 1 party consent state. As long as you are a party to the conversation, you do not need their consent. The only issue I could foresee is if you were recording a conversation between riders that you were not a part of. If you wanted to cover yourself against that, stickers on the passenger doors letting them know they are being recorded should cover you. www.dmlp.org/legal-guide/new-jersey/new-jersey-recording-law

Do you record video only or also audio. Sometimes the passengers are speaking about some confidential subjects or they might be pretty drunk and say or do something terrible. Recording audio could be harmful to them.
@Therideshareguy8 жыл бұрын
I do both but I don't use the audio for anything - only if there was an incident.
@pjworth61218 жыл бұрын
+Joseph Messineo Yes, it _could_ but from the other side of it, audio can also help to exonerate you should you be accused of something like vulgar, sexual or racist misconduct. It is nice to be concerned about the passengers' security but do not short change yourself in the process! Look into the laws in your state about surveillance, wire tapping, voyeurism and see what the policy is on video and audio. Here in NC, so long as one-party is privy to a conversation (ie: " Hi! I'm Joseph, your rideshare driver"), audio recording is a-ok. Just do not share these videos with anyone outside of Uber/Lyft, should the situation arise, and you should be fine.

@DKBlair8 жыл бұрын
You can record video anytime anywhere, it's protected by the 1st ammendment. Audio is really the only concern as some states still try to include it under wiretapping laws. No rider should have an expectation of privacy in my car and my dashcam is on the windshield in plain sight, so I feel I am pretty well protected to start. Texas is a 1 party consent state and I am always a part of the conversation (At a minimum I introduce myself, greet my rider, ask their name, and confirm the destination every time) so I'm covered, but if I lived in a 2 party consent state like CA I would put some stickers on my windows like Harry does.

I have a dash camera, when asked why? I explain for safety and to mitigate my liability. I then point out all of the crazy erratic drivers we see driving them home. As cars zip past us and cut us off and I have to brake hard, I stress this is the reason why I have a dash cam. After that the questions cease because they see my point of view. I close my case by saying, "The person who caused the accident will swear on a stack of Bibles, Korans, or Torahs a mile high saying it was my fault". I then say, "The dash cam is my proof I was not at fault". When I am asked about the rear facing camera, I explain that we live in a society of Lawyers willing to sue at the drop of a hat. I further explain that the dash cam is my proof that I did not do anything inappropriate. I make it very clear that the last thing I want is to be involved in a he say/she say so the dash cam put's the kibosh on all of that. Some will ask me more questions so I explain about the Lyft Driver who hit someone riding a bicycle in San Francisco but the witnesses say it was the Lyft Driver fault. I then explain that the Driver did not have a dash camera so now he is fighting a legal nightmare. I stress that a dash camera can make the difference from being wrongly incarcerated or sued and forced in to bankruptcy over something I did not do and cannot prove my side of the story. I say a Lawyer suing me or the District Attorney prosecuting me will say prove it, prove you did not do it and I will slam down the video and say this shows what really happened. My dash camera has night vision so i can record what happens inside the car at night especially when i am driving a Female home. They can see the dash camera and I have yet to have received any complaints or accusations that I did something wrong. This is how I maintain my 5-Star Rating after being asked about my dash camera.

I find it funny that everyone knows about 2 party consent but they never read far enough to see the reasonable expectation of privacy clause. They don't have that in your car and even more so since you're using public roads. If they had that then they would be able to give blowjobs and ride cowgirl in your backseat and you wouldn't be able to do or say anything about it because "you weren't invited to the conversation". LOL at some of this stuff. Yes the guy got sued by that CEO but if he got a good Lawyer or was smart about representing himself he wouldn't lose and would receive a nice payout. I mean seriously, your car is currently being used as a public transport, which is basically what Uber and Lyft are considering they're available to the public. Literally anyone in the U.S. can get it. Everyone has the ability to get a smartphone because if you don't make enough money, you get one for free.
