In a recent interview Todd Howard discussed the future of Starfield, and revealed that Shattered Space - the game's first DLC - will arrive in the Fall of 2024. Is this then, Starfield's second chance?

Why give it a second chance? I love this game. It's kind of a declaration of love to the space program. With its characters, stories and planets, it's also much more tangible than a "No Man's Sky" could ever be. I'm really looking forward to everything else that's coming for this game. I'm at almost 100 hours and yet to complete the main story (and that is almost completely ignoring planet exploration). Honestly the gunplay is the least of the problems. If the planets were not copy pasted I would have dumped 200+ hours in this game because it's so fun. The game just needs more variety, more building types, more unique things on planets and a more varied geography in general to justify exploration, otherwise it just feels like you're wasting time. Scanning flora and fauna is not nearly enough.

@@nickohhhFor me personally though I’m not the original commenter I love the alien variety on different planets, I think it’s a very overlooked part of the game and the designers didn’t get enough props for their work. Every planet with life the aliens are so different, and they even change colors in different biomes. I just like that aspect of it, and I like that planets have multiple biomes with actual differences. When I first saw a frozen mountain biome I thought the scale of it was really cool. And how biomes mesh together if you land in between them So while I also like the rpg elements and gunplay, I mostly enjoy this type of sci-fi aesthetic. I think the artwork and all the details of the aliens are great. I spent a lot of time surveying planets because the aliens were just different each time and unique. I think the aliens are the best part of exploration in Starfield, though I wish the game had more POIs/caves/buildings etc. The planets and moons having different gravity is a nice gameplay mechanic too

@@efxnews4776 I did the same, and then got reminded how to do proper first person melee combat, and how to redeem your game. Played it before the reworks and now going trough the reworks, very different game, it's great. Bethesda really needs to get their act together, they worked with very outdated game mechanics and the only part that worked well was the shooting, but the AI was beyond stupid, the melee sucks and flying isn't way to basic, and what is the point of flying in space anyway when you can just go into the menu and poof, you are there. Nothing is worked out that well. They need to fix a lot to make it interesting.

@@Bambeakz A game like Cyberpunk indeed can be fixed, a game like Starfield? No, it can't be fixed... You see, the problem of Cyberpunk was mostly external problems or technical ones, the external problems were mostly CDPR managment russhing the game despite not being ready, the technical problems came from this problem. BUT the CORE gameplay of Cyberpunk was there from day 1, the story, characters, quests, the open world, all that, was there from the beggining. Starfield is know to be the least buggyest game of Bethesda so far, but it also is the more souless and uninspired game they ever did. in the points where Cyberpunk shines, Starfield failed horribly. And yes techinical problems can be fixed, lack of vision, lack of inspiration, there's no fixing of such things...

If you look at the game awards, the companies that win are usually fantasy RPGs. The sci fi counterparts from said studios never win, like fallout, mass effect, armoured core, cyberpunk, .... Starfields Scope and scale and the sheer amount of things you can find if you actually play it deep enough makes it rather unique for a open space game that's an RPG as well... I haven't stopped playing it so far, and can't wait for the dlc.

I'll definitely give it another play. But I'd like to see a little more thought go into things. For example, the dev's consideration of Akila city really didn't go much past "Make it look like the wild west!" No one apparently stopped to consider how a society that apparently couldn't pave the streets of its capital city was somehow the best ship builders in the galaxy and had a larger fleet than the United Colonies. Evidence of rushed, simplistic writing that they evidently expected would take a back seat to graphics. All that being said, I still enjoyed it, and it was gorgeous. Let's see how it goes from here.

@@lp2059 If an RPG requires loading screens to open doors, then whoever thought it was a good idea for a "next gen" game needs to update their take on game development. There are a number of RPGs out there, even from 10 years ago that do not use loading screens for a simple task like "entering doors". Moreover, for a game that uses procedural generation, why would planets need to be divided by fish bowls with not a hint of consistency? It's like some "indie devs" weren't able to go away with this outdated design 8 years ago.

For me the game ran good and it felt really solid, like the whole feel of the movement and interactions with the environments. While I was going in, knowing it will involve a non-seamingless gameworld with transtional loadingscreens, I gotta say, there were a few too many, which really hurt the gameplay over time. I also was expecting WAY more different assets to explore on planets. They completely shat the bed in regards to that, since there are like 10 different things (like stations, caves etc.) you can explore and you have seen everything in no time, if you like running around and exploring planets. I wish they would have put more time and effort into that. The weapon variety and crafting options were really good though just like the combat. The basebuilding though... it felt so unfinished and there was no real incentive or reason to even engage with that clunky feature. Since the game is not that old yet, I'm willing to give them a chance to improve and maybe look into playing it again when they deliver something that's interesting.

I might try it again. Especially if the mod community keeps going. I think they should’ve had some planets that had failed civilizations on it and areas like that to explore. Like what if you had went and landed on a planet and saw the remnants of giant structures that a past civilization had built that was no more. And you could explore all that. That would’ve been cool.

I'm the wrong person to ask because I'm one of those 5K players on Steam still playing the game regularly. I'm afraid I can't answer what draws me to it even being aware of and acknowledging all of its problems. Yep, will likely hop in again when it drops, as the setting looks pretty interesting and I'm always up for more handcrafted content. By that time I'd hope that the buggy they teased is fully implemented, which would make the interim between landing and content much more manageable. They'll still need a massive overhaul of the POI system if they want Starfield to have anything near the sort of map staying power of Skyrim or Fallout 4, but with how we can see the engine works right now with xEdit, not impossible, just a significant effort.

Strangely, fallout 4 has better exploration than starfield. Because everything is on a single map and can be seen in the distance, your simple wandering can uncover all kinds of locations and quests, whereas in starfield every planet is a flat terrain landscape with some foliage and animals sprinkled in, and the same copy/paste locations over and over again. There's no reason to go anywhere and there's no where to even go. All the unique places are seperated by several layers of loading screens.

Space traversal was underwhelming. If they allow you to zip around planets and to other planets without using your nav menu and encounter battles, ships, abandoned stations and points of interest along the way, then i feel this will greatly improve the experience. I can live without the whole landing and taking off. But i can’t live without the ability to point my ship in one direction, engage a super cruise of sorts and watch my radar tempt me into dropping out of it and exploring what i am about to blast past. It should have been there at launch. Hopefully it will come at the dlc but i think they are just focussing on land vehicles.

When they release vehicles and they have a plan for making exploration more fun, then you will see people start saying the comeback lines. Until then, it’s very nice for people that really enjoy the game like me. But for the average gamer, they need to fix exploration. I think they realized the hard way that most people don’t want space exploration to be “realistic”. Red Dead 2 gets it right. You need interesting stuff pretty close by at all times. Even if it’s not “realistic”.

I got the game because I appreciated the more grounded aesthetic compared to No Man's Sky, and I was really looking forward to the ship building aspect. I was hugely disappointed by it. Assuming it get's fixed, and allows things like ladders placement, and greater variety in the modules, I might come back. But only after seeing a LOT of reviews and videos about it. I made the mistake of preordering. I knew better but this channel, (and the fact that I had never played a game by Bethesda before and didn't know it's reputation) hyped me up for the ship building and...well....yeah. Anyways, won't be making that mistake again. I might also be too busy with MSFS 2024.

Funny, because for me the shipbuilding was probably the best part of the game. Of course not perfect but to even have a feature to build your own spaceship that works (in my opinion) relatively well was incredible for me. However it was hugely overshadowed by the fact, that your ship is basically a useless brick. You almost never get to use it and the few times you do you are fine with a stolen stock ship... Also everything else about the game was mostly just "okay" for what it's worth. With some major hickups sprinkeled in between (bugs, loading screens, writing you name it). I had a bit of fun with it, but it was honestly Zer0 memorable...

As they've basically said they're not going to rework the game at all and no reworks were on their roadmap, no I'm not going to give the game a second chance. I still won't recommend it to anyone. I will try out the expansion, since I already paid for it and see if the storyline is as least decent and if they do anything with the lore but considering modern Bethesda's track record with lore, I don't have much hope, even if House Varun is likely the subject of the DLC and the most interesting part of the setting. Then again, Bethesda likes to have interesting things happen in the past of the setting and you come afterward, so who knows if the story will even be entertaining (none of the plots of Starfield were good, but I did find the Vanguard one entertaining, if very predictable).

I'm willing to give it another shot, but I liked it from the start and that never changed. Maybe because I stopped playing while I was still enjoying it, because of Phantom Liberty. That worked out, because I really wanted to give the modders time to cook, and I knew it'd take for the Creation Kit release to really give them that opportunity. I won't blindly pick up the DLC, but I am at least tentatively interested in it.

To be honest? I left Starfield. After being a Bethesda fan for a long time. It was "hollow" compared to Fallout or Skyrim. No, because the base game, the fundamentals, the story, are all fucked. There's no way a little DLC will fix all of that. They would have to rework and rewrite so much, and no game studio has ever done that. The closest was Mass Effect 3 created an extended ending, but they left 95% of the game the same. There's no chance they'll make a Far Harbor or Nuka World that rewrites the whole base game story.

Yes. It can be a fun game but they absolutely MUST randomize the contents/objects/npcs/loot for the standardized modular base POIs. It makes the travel issue (which is bad and likely cannot be worked around completely) just that much worse when you know exactly where every object, enemy and item will be located. It can't be too terribly hard to modify these to accept more random elements. Those smashed inop doors? Make them a valid section you can open and visit. This ain't rocket science BGS, no pun intended. The current beta has some real issues so after playing a bit I reverted to vanilla until the 15th. Still hoping they will get to respectability eventually. Thanks for covering OA!

I bought the pre-release bundle because like everyone else, I was expecting Skyrim-in-space based off Todd Howard's pre-release comments and leaks. What we got was more like a thinned out Fallout-in-space (Starfield even has some of the same HUD layouts and styles). Because of this, despite including the DLC in my pre-launch bundle, I doubt I'll play it again. Having my "spouse" killed regardless of what I did in an impossible to prevent, scripted, event around 200 hours into the playthrough just completely de-incentivised me to play any further. Also, learning that eventually you have to go through the Nexus and begin the NG+ trail while losing all your gear and companions each time, was the nail in the coffin for Starfield - that methodology is simply player flagellation and punishment, not reward and incentive.

By that point, even solitaire was more stimulating and less of a chore to play. Fortunately, I didn't pay for the game in the first place.
