Do you like black panel Fenders? I think we all do, really. If you've been thinking about a D20 - here's how it is similar to and different from that classic Fender sound - with and without pedals.

The D20 doesn't have the 'default' mid cut that the Princeton has (which isn't a bad thing)... However, if you run the D20 through a Princeton IR- it sounds pretty much like a Princeton. Those cabs/ speakers are a HUGE factor.

I've been playing since '69 and was a die hard Fender/Vox/Marshall/Boogie guy for most of that time. That said, to me, the Revv sounds a little better and has more useful features than the Princeton. I owned a blackface Deluxe for years and have played through many Fenders. That Revv is really impressive. Nice Demo.

Thanks for the tips, Shawn. Been loving my D20 for the past 2 years and always understood that it had this "blackface" kinda thing. Never put the drive that low, and it helps with the volume up. With respect - I tried watching the "beers and gear" thing with the D20 and Fender, and honestly it was a bit painful to watch - not that great and a bit boring compared to your takes. I think just driving the D20 with heavy distortion doesn't do it justice. Yeah, yeah, it can do it very well, but the clarity you bring with your settings is ten folds. Cheers and thanks.

That amp, same price as a Princeton (in the US at least - here in Aus the Princeton is almost double the price, the REVV woudl be even more), apart from the two notes extras in it, virtual cabs etc, i dunno why you wouldnt just get a Princeton if you wanted a Princeton sound, it has the accurate circuit out of the box, the Princeton has better note attack and a snap missing on the REVV Plus: REVV (with more can go wrong internally) Warranty: 1 measly year Princeton (that anyone can repair even after) Warranty: 2 Years

I like the princeton a lot, I have an older silverface but your analysis is very strange to say the least. The D20 isn't meant to be a princeton nor is it trying to be, I don't think anyone that is looking at this amp is craving that. This test appears to just show a comparison of how it COULD also cover that base and that part is important to understand before jumping to the conclusion you did. You also didn't mention with the D20 you get an effects loop, you have the opportunity to run the amp as normal through a cab and with no other gear have a signal sent to FOH that is 100% usable, plus it does you know... many other sounds not just this one. I don't own a D20 but videos like this are helpful for someone like me who obviously loves my princeton but is looking for a solution live that can cover many bases and leave my nearly 50 year old amp at home. Anyways, great job Shawn thanks for the video.

@@ShawnTubbs Sorry, but its a LOT of money here in Australia, hard to go for something that someones going to look at you crossed eyed for asking them to fix in 5 10, 15 years, when the Princeton will (probably) still be ticking along. Sorry if you thought if my original post was a a bit dismissive, but some people, myself included have to save for years for one amp, and repairability in such cases has to be a major determining factor. Always enjoy your playing if that helps and softens the blow :)
@ShawnTubbs
@ShawnTubbs 2 жыл бұрын
@@adrianmiller1971 No need whatsoever to be "sorry" Adrian. I didn't at all take your thoughts to be dismissive. The Fender Princeton is a highly serviceable amplifier and if that is a major factor for you then you should stick with that amp. It's a really good amp man! Dancing around the idea of buying two of these to run stereo. Would love to have one do the Fender thing and one more of a Vox style. Is that possible, or will they only do the Fender thing since it's 6v6 tubes?
@ShawnTubbs
@ShawnTubbs 2 жыл бұрын
The D20 is really voiced more along the lines of a Fender. There are possibilities if you are planning on running 2 D20 amps in stereo direct via the Two Notes embedded software to get one of the amps to sound more Vox-like. Thanks for watching!

It's hard to beat a pair of 6V6s driven hard. They clean up nicely when you back off the volume so they are NOT a one trick pony. A solid state PS stiffens it up nicely and would be my preference. Does anyone if the D20 uses a solid state PS? Does anyone know what the plate voltage is on the D20? I'm guessing somewhere around 360v?
@MrAxman53
@MrAxman53 2 жыл бұрын
D20 uses solid state rectification, if that's what you mean by PS (power supply, I'm guessing?) There is no tube rectifier in the tube complement.
@jamorrison82
@jamorrison82 2 жыл бұрын
I assume for PS you meant power stage? The D20 has a tube power stage with 2x6v6GT tubes. However, if you're using it with the Two Notes software you can bypass the tube power stage and use a model that replicates EL84s, KT88s, and other tubes.

Does switching from 4W to 20w impact the sound, volume and headroom aside of course? I love the idea of running this amp at 4W for bedroom level but I don’t want to have a “degraded” sound quality because of this.
@RevvAmps
@RevvAmps Жыл бұрын
It is just different in the ways you mention. You get that smaller amp sound such as breaking up earlier. If you want the most "open" sound the full 20 watts is best, but if you want the classic "sit in a mix" smaller sound the 4 watts is the way to go. Of course being able to play it at any wattage and volume setting through the Two notes XLR out is a huge benefit because then you can set everything exactly how you want, tone-first, with no volume considerations. You'd be surprised, you might like how it responds in 20 watt mode just with the volume knob lower, the variable wattage option is just that - an option!

@@RevvAmps Thank you very much for your answer. Much appreciated. Would you recommend to switch in standby mode when switching the following features: power (4/20W), pre/post (for Torpedo) and Reactive Load (in the back), or it is safe to do it one the fly?
@RevvAmps
@RevvAmps Жыл бұрын
@ the only time you need to REALLY make sure you are not playing / in standby is when you are changing between the internal load & cabinet load with the switch on the back. Make sure that's in the right position before you put any signal through the amp!!

@ShawnTubbs Well, that's not a good comparison. You need to record your D20 on its own vs the Fender. Clearly you needed the Irs and Ox because the D20 doesnt sound like the Fender on its own. Use a real cab or into an innerface no OX or IRs then well see. Anyone can use an OX box and IRs to sound closer to any amp.
