Very nice as usual. A lot of handloaders subscribe to the, "NEVER deviate from published data!" school of thought, while my mantra is, "Do your research and extrapolate intelligently". How many factory cartridges started life as wildcats for which there was no published data? How many folks shoot smokeless in the big "buffalo" cartridges for which there is no book loads? When in doubt, call the powder manufacturer. They can tell you if your combo is safe, and often offer insight into its suitability in your application. I've been handloading for thirty years and loaded unlisted powder/ cartridge combos dozens of times with no ill effects (largely because I wasn't looking for screaming velocities).

I could not agree more. I began reloading more than 50 years ago with a LEE loader in 30-06 (not counting ramming "holy black" down the barrel as reloading although it is) and have always followed "as long as it is safe for the caliber" all is good. I now enjoy most shooting a .510 Nitro Express with 94 grains 4350 behind a 570 grain DGX. That is just the modernization of the "too late for the buffalo", buffalo cartridge known as 50-140 Sharps although Sharps never chambered a gun for it as they were gone from business before the cartridge came into prominence. In my opinion as long as you pay attention to weight of bullet, capacity of case, and rate of burn for the powder and check, check, check, you will be alright.

My only thoughts are some powders are very sensitive to detonation when loading reduced loads in a large volume case. I don't have a clue about your combination, but personally, I try to look at similar reduced loads. Especially using older books. But I love using pistol powders with cast bullets for backyard plinking.
@noahmercy-mann4323

@@Michael-rg7mx A very astute and valid concern. I stick with powders that are less "position sensitive" when loading small volumes of powder. For example, Titegroup in pistols and 5744 in rifles are good choices in small charge/big case applications. If there is no suitable powder and I am forced to use a reduced charge of a powder that can "flash over" and cause erratic pressures, I use a ballistic filler like PuffLon or Super Grex.

When loading black powder, just be sure not to leave any air space in the case. This will lead to excessive pressure. Case full with the bullet seated or a compressed powder charge. As with the .44-40, it's a tight fit to load 40 grains of powder as we no longer use the balloon head cases which provided more space for powder.

Gallery loads were popular with the .45-70. and you can still get 150 grain 'collar button' 0.458" cast lead bullets from Western Bullets. They also list load data, although it's hotter than what I prefer, I use 10 grains of Unique. I usually carry a few rounds when I'm deer or elk hunting, they're great for grouse or bunnies. I also remember folks shooting wax bullet loads indoors, using special cases with drilled out primer holes and no powder. They would shoot into a cardboard box stuffed with rags as a back stop. I doubt it's still a thing, breathing lead-based primer smoke indoors...yeah, that'll set the Safety First types into hysterics.😉

I’m a 38/40 fan! Been shooting a 1923 Winchester 1892 short magazine carbine for around 50 years or so. My current load is a 180 grain powder coated Missouri Bullet, .401 dia. RNFP over 18 grs. 2400 powder. Don’t know the velocity but this load is certainly accurate. Sites are ivory front bead with a Redfield receiver site. Being a deer Hunter, I developed this load just in case I got an itch to take the old girl hunting some time but never have. I just have too many better choices. Mostly it’s a 6MM Remington, 270 or 30-06. The 6 must be a lucky gun as it seems to be the one I’m carrying when the right deer comes along. Anyway, having our own range, the 38/40 and I spend a lot of time back there ringing steel. Old lever guns are awesome and they don’t beat you up. This is an interesting video for me. I've been looking to load some "low pressure" loads for an original Smith & Wesson Frontier model double action break top revolver that I bought a couple of years ago. I'm not so sure about the use of Trail Boss in it, although with that velocity, the pressure should be pretty low compared to 35 grains of black powder. I had been thinking about 25 grains of 3F and filler behind the bullet for lower pressure, but now I'm thinking that 15 grains of 3f and filler would be a better load to be easy on the old revolver.

Another great video Jake. Down below a fellow states those will kill, OH yes most certainly. I am still working the non commercial bp and having a blast, literally, doing it. You like tallow and bees wax, I like 60-40 bees wax and lanolin, it can be adjusted for temperature changes and seems to work good all the way down to -10*. Where you are -10* would be an extreme of extremes, I would be interested in tallow and bees wax in cold weather though. Keep experimenting it is how we carry on.

Those bullets are just not packing enough lube for black powder especially if you are running higher charges. Original 44wcf bullets had two lube grooves. Today many of us CAS and serious cartridge bp shooters are using bullets with one very large lube groove. I can shoot a two day match without cleaning my barrel. 35 grains of holy black under a 200 grain mav44 big lube bullet or 215 grain Accurate molds 43-215C bullets. I generally do run a patch wetted with ballistol at the end of the first day though.

A guy on the forums said he blew up his Merwin and Hulbert revolver with light smokeless loads. Lower velocity with smokeless doesn't necessarily mean less pressure. I don't think your rifle would blow up, they are actually quite strong, but the toggle action will start to show more ware. Regardless I liked the video.

With reference to your 1400fps with pure lead bullets from the previous video, made me think that they could have been stripping lead off against the rifling instead of following the rifling. That would have given you basically no accuracy. I am of the opinion that 1000fps is possibly the fastest that pure lead would handle. Antimony and tin to the rescue. Love your work and honest approach to things.

I don’t know the exact figures but I know you’re right. That was the original reason for the copper jacket. The lead on its own couldn’t handle the speed and pressures in the barrel. The copper jacket fixed that.

I did the same thing I had like 300 240gr bullets for 44 S&w Russian and 44 colt, so I loaded them into my 44-40 for a reproduction Cimarron uberti 1873 rifle. They are dead on accurate to about 150 yards. After that they just must lose stability because they’re all over the place. I recently loaded up some 200gr bullets so I’m curious to see if they shoot better. They’re a much shorter bullet maybe that’s what’s made for my barrel twist rate. All black powder btw. Swiss and schutzen.

Not watched the other video yet, but i am betting at 1400 you were getting some leading/base deformation/blowby. I would add a Gascheck and see if that improves your high speed load. Love this segment though ...would like to see you come down a little lighter...also would love to see a few grains of really fast pistol powder ....see if the "mouse fart" quiet load could be obtained ...since you have the longer barrel. Maybe not in an original though. Still gotta try it in my 24" rossi '92 ( 357 ) or the 24" new win 94 ( 45 colt) .......would love to come up with an uber quiet small game load.

I like seeing the fps! Gives me a good feel for the load being put on the toggle link and lead fowling should be less with softer cast bullets. I will admit I do like the report of higher say 40 grains over 30 but not worth the leading and the strain on the toggles. On replicas is doesn’t take much to mess up the toggles. The short stroke toggles are the worst! Even 30 grains of bp opens up the headspace after 100 rounds and after you notice light stikes the toggles are history. I ever get another 1873 or 1866 i will live with the factory toggle links

the 40 grain load likely moved so fast in the barrel it started to smear, which would destabilize it. As far as how dangerous smokeless is, that stuff is as close to burning like black powder as smokeless ever gets, and there's also no way that load is going to exceed 12000 psi, and honestly most of those old lever guns can handle substantially more. Maybe try a harder projectile with the 40 grain load to see if it makes a difference? Anyway, entertaining and informative as always, thanks :)

Good morning, I always try to give time to those who produce interesting videos. You produce very interesting videos. Bucking the norms always is much more interesting than taking for granted the standard, "never ever do that" attitude. Your approach is way more reasonable. Like going without sunscreen for fifteen minutes is not like staying all day on the beach unprotected. Good show guy.

I shoot CAS with a 1866, loaded with black powder (or T7). I load my cartridges with pads of 1.3CC or 1.6CC LeePrecision. A dry felt filler and 200 grs 427 ball. Light charge to protect the target, and almost similar to the original 44 Flat Henry... Never a problem with this charge, as long as I do not forget to put powder... lived, alas...lol

Hi Willard I was recently shot when my Pietta 1851 Navy. 44 Chainfired and I'm not sure what exactly happened. the video is on my channel (My Revolver Chainfired and Shot Me!) I would like for you to watch it and tell me what you think happened. I think the ball bounced off the side of the gun and ricocheted off the nearby tree and that's what hit me (I was uninjured) As for the source of the chain fire I am deadset on it being from the 301 4 wing musket caps I was modifying to fit the gun (they were very loose) and I don't think it was from the front because I always blow the front of the Chambers with an air compressor for the first load everytime I shoot and I already checked to make sure the Chambers didn't have a loose fit when I first got the cylinder. (but I got to get a new cylinder because my nipple wrench got stripped out and had to wait 3 months to get a new one so some of the threads got rusted) Also me trying to load my Brass Frame Pietta 1851 Navy .44 with less powder faster ended up causing 4 squibs in the barrel from not having enough powder so I'm wondering how it didn't blow up like a hand grenade.

I’ll be perfectly honest, Man. That didn’t look like a chain fire to me at all. I watched it three times and in slow motion. It looks to me that your caps were forcing the ball into the barrel and when one did go off you had multiple squibs. The ball that hit you, did it have rifling marks cut into it or was it smooth? The delayed ignition you were having sounded like you were using 5gr of powder which will not compress because the ram rod doesn’t extend far enough. This mean your powder is not up against the cap and will have a delay in firing. I’ve experienced this myself with 15gr and under in an 1860 army. As for it not exploding with multiple squibs you might have swelled or cracked your barrel but the gas can escape between the cylinder and the barrel and if you’re only using 5 gr of powder I can imagine it not being catastrophic. Modern guns are pretty tough but either way I’m glad you’re okay. Stay safe out there.

@@Everythingblackpowder the ball had scratches all over it and only one chamber was discharged out of the 6 on the case hardened model so it must have gone down the barrel then right? But I checked the ground I was shooting at and there is nothing that could of caused a ricochete. So with the scratches all over the ball it means it 100% traveled down the barrel right? And since all 5 other cylinders still had a ball there was no squibs in the case hardened model (the squibs occurred in the Brasser with the fake case hardened loading lever then I put the Other barrel on the brasser where I had another squib)

ABSOLUTELY off topic; but, truly interested in your opinion! If inappropriate, please delete. I shoot 44 Special in my Uberti Open Tops. Standard load is 28-grains APP/FFg under a .430”, 200-grain, powder-coated, LRNFP. Surprisingly, i also shoot 28-grains of APP/FFg under a .460” (before ramming), 217-grain Johnston & Dow in my Pietta 1860 Armies. And, yes, my attempt to come close to the 44 Henry Flat. I like this load; but, really can’t say I have taken the time to “optimize” it to either type of gun (as it is my standard SASS load … no real need). I’d really like your input and suggestions, as I’m thinking about purchasing a Cimarron/Uberti, Yellow Boy replica, in 44 Special to round off a “set”. I also shoot a Uberti Short Rifle and pair of Cimarron Pistoleros in 45 Colt, a st which is rounded out.

So how did you deviate?TrailBoss data is up to not compressed. Some stuff you have no choice but to pioneer your own data for unless you’re gonna never shoot it again.

Push a soft lead bullet down the barrel at a high rate of speed and depending on the rate of twist, the bullet will try to run straight and squeeze ahead of the rifling. Hence, the reason for the poor accuracy of hot loads. Copper jacketed bullets will stand up better or hard lead for that matter. This is the number one issue with lead bullets, don't run excessive speed or miss the target. I hope my explanation is understandable.

Back in the 80s I worked on a large ranch , I bought a 1873 Winchester 44-40 rifle at a gun show it was made in 1907 the hand load info he gave me was from the Clyde Williamson book lever legacy, for 1892 Winchester, but that’s what i used ,, Owned the rifle for over 20 years probably shot 300 rounds or more through it, not saying it was good idea, just saying , i can see the faces light up now ! 😳

Great fun and awesome info. I noticed the extra info about the lube. I was asking last time because I started mine with the factory lube but changed to 1/2 bees wax/ 1/2 peel tallow mix. I just got a lee 200gr mold RNFP. I'll try some different loads and see what they do. If you need some lead pills grime a holler. Thanks again for sharing the info and always diggin' the vids.

EBP, going back to the last vid bullets. Do you think that maybe the soft lead was being pushed too fast to grab the rifling or pushed over the rifling at 1400 fps and maybe these new bullets would take that speed better?
