My pup is 11 weeks. He’s getting so much better at not biting but when he does redirects don’t always work. I end up having to pull him back on his leash. Tell him to sit and grab a toy to distract him. He was SO much worse a week ago and he’s learning now but I exercise him in the house and outside as much as possible. He hasn’t had his ‘I can go on walks’ vax yet and I can’t wait for him to have that, then I can walk and socialise him. I know he can run around in my garden and that’s great but his biting has left me and my arms legs and hands looking like I went ten rounds with a bullwhip. I will deffo be trying these tips though. Thank you 🙏🏽

Very good advice in this video. I’d say the most important advice is about the relationship. This is what I try to focus on the most. The specific advice about how to deal with the biting is right on and it takes practice to get it right. My little GSD male is 3 months old and he is a medium to high drive guy so lots of exercise helps a lot and having a plan for each interaction will help as well. My advice, I wear my boots inside so I can react the right way cuz it hurts if he nips my feet.

Excellent video!!! I really dropped the ball around the time my GSD turned 4 months up to about a year due to bad health. He became over-socialized and overly-friendly which caused other issues..................Now he's about 1 1/2 years old and certainly I wish I had watched Will's videos before but, positively, I found his videos about two months ago. They are excellent and EXACTLY the type and approach to training I wish I had learned, however, ALL Will's advice, direction and suggestions are helping me immensely now. We do more leash work ( which is working), my expectations are basic obedience and we use a ball as well as food rewards for praise. He still likes to 'steal' my gloves even when I'm wearing them - he thinks its great fun - but has completely stopped nipping me on bare skin..We're getting there and I'm confident he's going to be my best of the GSD who have been my companions!! THANK YOU, WILL! YOU ARE EXCELLENT!!!🐾🐾🐾💯💯💯😊

Well, I never leave comments on KZbin, but I need to this time. Just picked up our 9 week old german shepherd three days ago after applying for rescues for a few months (she needed rehoming from a friend of a friend). My partner and I named her Maybe and are starting up your puppy course! I've watched probably 4 hours of yours videos collectively now, and they've been so informative and encouraging. Many years ago, when I was 19, I irresponsibly got a blue heeler puppy when I didn't have the stable life set up to support him properly. He ended up being very reactive and I rehomed him after two years with a loving family when I realized my care and efforts were not going to be good enough (a local rescue agency helped me find a family with experience with the breed). I'm 28 now, working from home, and finally ready to do things right. I have enormous anxiety about making the same mistakes, but your videos and courses are already helping me a lot. Maybe is a beautiful puppy, even-tempered and learning incredibly quickly. I absolutely love your focus on training philosophy first instead of just step-by-step rules. It's what was missing from the courses I went through with my heeler. Thanks so much Will and team.

I just got a 14 week old German Sheppard boy he is so skinny. He has recovered from parvo about a week ago and he gets worn out from walking easy and isn’t used to too many people. I’m 29 and just got a home and I’ve been wanting a big dog for a long time and I think I’m going to do a puppy class course because he’s my first german Sheppard. I’m only working 24 hours right now at work so I’m crate training him slowly (I’m still waiting for his big cage to come this week so I can properly train. I’ve been using a small portable cage for now ). I just got him two days ago 🎉🎉

Hey I’m really struggling with my puppy, the way you’re saying he’ll be slightly scared when you are firm and correcting him my puppy just really doesn’t care he just carries on. Nothing scares him, I am super firm and confident but it literally doesn’t work he just lunges and bites more or starts barking. I feel exhausted with it at the moment I feel like I’ve tried everhrhing people are saying. I have been doing exactly to a T what you’re saying for a couple of weeks now.

Try maybe establishing good training techniques, such as leash pressure and good treat placement to avoid getting nipped when training. I highly recommend using a martingale collar when training, they work great! Practice focus with your dog meaning, when you are training lets say a sit, once your dog has a pretty good understanding of the concept, try moving his reward around and getting your dog to stay focused on you(eye contact). Even on walks, try and work on a focused heal where your dog is constantly locked on to you giving you 100% attention. I find when your dog is always 100% focused on you, the training and obedience becomes a walk in the park. Another tip is focus on a solid "out" for your dog. Meaning, when pup is playing with a toy and you give the "out" command, pup has less than a second to release what pup has. One thing that worked for my dog , is duplicating his favorite toy (for my dog its a tennis ball so i use 2). Throw the ball and when your dog brings it back (pup probably will not drop it, and donttry to take it from pup) show pup the other ball, give pup the "out" command and be patient when waiting for pup to drop it. As soon as pup drops it, praise pup(simple verbal praise with be good) and throw the second ball. This allows you to work on pup dropping what is being played with, without you having to go near his mouth. If you start to see progress, you can replace the second toy with treats. Always remember to exercise your dogs brain when inside, work on establishing a good(place),making him wait for a treat or his favorite toy, or maybe even an ice cube. I hope this makes sense and helps! Good luck and dont give up on doggo!!

I got a 18 week old Gsd hes 4 months old now but he does the same things with the treats I will train him and he works fine with them but as soon as I don't have them he doesn't listen to me im trying to get that eye contact and I'm saying his name before he does something I want but when. He's not training he doesn't listen it works with treats but I want to work enough so when I say something that I don't have to use them and he does have a biting problem got me a couple time and my clothes and will not let go unless if he tries to grab it in more and I put it away I'm trying to be as patient as I can be I know he's just a puppy but at the same time I feel bad for him I got other dogs in the house one of them is very mean to him and will bite him if he comes near something and its not a surprise to me beacause he has bite our next door neighbors im surprised they didn't call animal control anyway as I was saying he just wants to play with them and we got to that are small dogs and my grandparents are really mean to him when he does try to play with them it got to the point where he got slapped for being around them I would never hit my dog like that to make he cry never there has been times where I did hurt him but I didn't mean to like in the door way he knows I would never hurt him to make him cry but all he wants to do is play with the dogs and I feel bad beacause they don't want to play with him or my grandparents pick them up or put them inside and its heartbreaking and im trying to look at videos now Beacause when he plays he starts barking I tell him no but he doesn't stop I know that no isn't a positive thing to say but I don't know what else to do im still training him with eye contact and sit and im trying on stay

My 5 month GSD may actually be possessed. Lol. This is to be expected to a certain degree. All the comments about problems at 8-10 weeks seem like normal puppy rough play. Wait till the teenage phase, ugh ! One day they’ll sit, wait and the next they’ll act like you don’t exist except to try and bite your hand or foot every time you move. Please don’t give up. I’ve raised several GSD’s. This always goes away with some good leadership. Don’t give them anything without looking to you for approval. I mean anything, food, toys, treats and attention. Never stop this. They like it. Also a tired puppy is a well behaved one. It does work. GSD’s are NOT for just laying around the house sitting by the chair. They need a job.

I think calm and consistent leadership is the key to any human/dog relationship, or parent/child relationship too for that matter. In addition to these I think fair leadership is also very important. You can’t expect too much from your dogs, they have to learn before they can be expected to perform or behave. Also they have limitations just as ppl do and some things are beyond them or not in their interests. You can’t expect a weak or nervy dog to be a protection dog, a lazy dog to be a competitor in agility and most importantly and dominant high drive dog to be a kid friendly dog. Make sure you know your family’s and your own needs and limitations before getting a dog and then find a good breeder that will help match you with the right dog and temperament for you.

I have an 11 week old puppy. I’m trying to redirect but she chooses the hand or limb over the toy. She’s learned to sit, stay, lay down, and shake very quickly and also tells us when she needs to go outside. It’s the biting that we are having trouble with. I just worry about my young daughter and trying to keep her from being bit. I’m sure she will grow out of it but I continue to try and redirect. I’m thinking more exercise as she get pretty amped up around 7 PM then crashes out.

He is a fast learner on everything. I already have him sitting before he gets food, he is good on the leash. He is good in his crate. but for some reason I cant get the biting to stop. With respect, kids shrieking and screaming, wildly running around, and high pitched noises ramp up any young dogs energy, ESPECIALLY a GSD. Please make sure your kids remain calm around the puppy until he understands bite inhibition. The other 'thing' could be your GSD is working line - herding. I had two like that and now have a "show" line GSD who is actually very energetic but different in what sparks his interest. ( squirrels and birds) Please take NO offence from my post.

Hey guys! Happy to see I'm not alone here! My german shepperd is 8 weeks old, this was my first week with him and what a challenge. He is so sweet when he is sleeping or calm, but he started biting my ancles and hands and it hurts a loottt!! I tried several things, including exercise etc... but nothing would do the trick, specially on how to react when he bites. I started reacting right away when he would bite me or something that I didn't want him to bite, like this: getting him on the side, secure him and make sure he wasn't able to bite again until he was calmer. Another thing that my vet said was to flip him with his tummy upwards, secure him in the neck (not strongly but firmly), and say no, until he feels we are in charge. Some times it worked, but specially when he was more stressed, it looked to make the effect, but not sure if it is promoting or fostering the sense of good leader behaviour.... Any comments? Would be great to exchange some concrete ideas... Also, I have a specific question with the approach of the video. I started doing that of leading him to the new toy, but then I also read somewhere that he may understand that if he bites, I will give him a nice toy. And that could lead to more bitting. Can you please elaborate a bit on this approach and how to avoid that happens?

IF HE COMES AFTER I HOLD HIM BY HIS COLLAR AND HAVE HIM SIT FOR ABOUT A FEW MIN FOR A TIME OUT SO HE KNOWS WHO IS IN CHARGE. AND I REPEAT IF HE DOES THIS AGAIN. I HAVE ONLY BEEN DOING THIS FOR 2 DAYS AND STARTING TO SEE IMPROVMENT. I KEEP A TOY WITH ME AND SO DOES MY DAUGTHER SO WHEN HE DOES BITE AT US AND WE SAY LEAVE IT AND HE STOPS THEN WE GIVE HIM A TREAT AND THEN A TOY THAT IS HEALTHY TO BITE ON. I HOPE THIS HELPS A BIT. I AM STILL LEARNING MYSELF WITH HIM.

My dog is almost 6 years old I think, and she’s fine around the family, out in public, etc etc, except for in the yard. If someone walks past while we’re outside using the bathroom, I have to rush her inside or absolutely hold her back until they pass because she will bite! And I don’t understand why. She’s docile and skiddish in every other public situation (the pet store, the park, etc etc) but in the yard it’s hell if someone walks by. We recently got her a cafe muzzle and she’s getting used to it, but I don’t understand. She’s the biggest love bug ever, and we rescued her when she was about 7 months from a kennel in someone’s backyard so we don’t know if she was socialized at all, but she was in relatively good health when we rescued her! Someone please help.

When he gets into that mode he doesnt redirect. He doesnt listen he has seriously hurt us multiple times. ( he is massive btw. Even at 9 weeks he is measuring almost 3 weeks a head of what he should.) We are working on the leader part. He feels like he is challenging us every second of every day. He also ...doesnt sleep. Trying to get my (13 week) puppy from biting. It might be somewhat better, but I am still having major problems. Three weeks on, the puppy still grabs, nips my legs when we walk (I try to walk three times a day with him) and not little nips. I have 30 puncture wounds in my legs, in spite of saying NO! forcefully, distracting him with acceptable chews, and doing obedience - when he gets into a puppy frenzy, sit is now often working but he will just as often go right back to it. He will play with a toy, then wham, grab my hand and slash it. (many bloody slashes on hands and arms as well). When he is tired he often gets more into a puppy frenzy. I'm not an inexperienced owner. This is my fifth german shepherd puppy as an adult. But this level of drawing blood is unprecedented. And its frustrating to walk with him when he goes for my legs, which he does every walk at some point.

Is it okay if she doesn’t listen or back off to grab her collar and kind of control her and have her look at you? I’ve done this when she just refuses to stop biting and wants to stay in that bite/play phase. I’ll pull my hand away and tell her no and she continues to lunge with her mouth at my hand. I just want to know if the control part is okay, she sort of gets it after that, she will stare at me and look sad I hold the collar for probably about 3-5 seconds and have her look at me while telling her no. I do plan on doing what you said but I’m worried she will keep lunging to bite me again (not that it hurts, it really doesn’t) I just want her to not be aggressive towards normal people but also maintain that protective mindset towards intruders or attackers

We got a German Shepherd puppy 1 month ago and he bites like crazy sometimes! What we noticed with him is that everytime he wants to bite it's because he wants to play and had lots of energy so I started taking him on walks mutliple times a day(20 mins every walk). It works really well but if the dog didn't stop after playing, walking, giving him chewing toys, we just tie him to the coffee table with his leash. We also like to put his doggy bed near him with some toys. ( btw he is 3 months old) We will try out the tips hoping it helps! thank you :)

I have had large breeds and trained many dogs in my life but my 6 month old gsd x rough collie is giving me a run for my money! I physically delivered him and his siblings from a complicated birth 4 days after my ESA Moe passed away. I wasn't planning on another dog for a long time. I wanted a German shepherd to raise and train for full service dog since my spinal arthritis will do nothing but get worse. I will need assistance with getting up and stabilizing my walking. I just didn't plan on such a strong bond and an attachment we had. My Moe loved his momma for the last 7 years he was a chi x rat terrier rescue with immediate understanding of my diabetes and heart fluctuation. Different licks barks and body locations for each. I was getting him neutered and enrolled us in honing his abilities and the day before surgery he developed a sever cough. So to the vet our lives changed immediately. He had a globoid heart chf and a plethora of other issues. Put on 3 new meds for the next 6 yrs twice a day. Everyone knew Moe he went everywhere with me! He was my glue. He taught me more than I thought I could learn about myself. Anyways enters Shep Shep Ripley.. I decided I we needed each other he listened to me at a month old. I ended up getting really sick had a mini stroke and I have been a very unusual weak. He knows and takes full advantage of that. I've been consistent with my rules since day one here as I expect more from large breeds. Hey it's my only true prejudice in this world. He goes irate with the word no I have told him paws off the table and counter thousands of times. I've done mon verbals treats redirects crated toys I've never ever had to repeat myself with any other dog. By the time a month rolled around all I needed to do was look in a certain direction and they knew what was expected. Crate training?! Laugh.. drop it.. umm nope..I have bruises and now a black eye but by total accident. I bent over and he ran by and jumped puppy 101. I love this guy to pieces but I had an ESA for a reason. But tbh he keeps me on my toes best I can be. Hees my shepy doo. I also have a very tiny kitten. His big sissy. Rough shape she was half dead when she let me and Moe rescue her. Prey drive yes but he's not mean to her unless I tell her no! Anyways I need all the help I can get I can't work currently and my family are paying for us for everything it's horrible but I am not a great trainer for sure but I have sent two to Westminster and trained Neapolitan mastiffs for two movies. I read something somewhere that we don't always get the dog we want.. we get the dog we need. I don't search for animals when it's time they find me. I can't give up. Any other person would send him to the Pound. They would not fair well from me if that happened. But my arms ... Yikes . He also had hyper growth. He was 45 lbs at 4 months. Approx. I'm typing all this for myself I need to get it out to people who understand. He may be mix half n half but his everything is all German shepherd. But he's my whomper butt shepy Shep Shep detective Ripley. And those around me don't understand there's a difference

I know this is old but I need help. So I have a 9month GSD. She’s mouthy and I can get her to respect me and she’s learning not to mouth/bite me. She’s improved a lot but she’s not perfect yet. The problem is. She bites, nips and mouths my 3 children, especially when playing. But it’s bad. She’s full on but my daughters leg just because she was excited because the kids were excited. She feeds off their energy. I can’t get her to stop biting at the kids even though I can get her to stop biting me. How do I fix this?

Wow, so sorry. I have a 1 1/2 yr old male rescue and he is still mouthy around me. My kids are grown and out of the home now. You might keep googling other videos. But his advice is spectacular. I would say walking very long distances to get her tuckered out before she is around your children. The more tired she is, she might just plop when she gets home. Then have one (not all the kids) give her a chew toy or treat then walk away. I think the longer your children are around her (gradually especially after she is tuckered out by 1 to 2 long walks per day) will help her to not be mouthy around your children. But I would be firm like he says. The second she mouths - touches her teeth to your child, you stop all play and separate / meaning all play stops now. Then later when she is calm the children can interact. German Shepherds thrive on attention, when you ignore them or put them in a laundry room (not crate) just for a few seconds each time they mouth you or the kids, she will understand play biting human hands are off limits. She may be teething, she may be hyper (like mine was) so calm down treats I use often, also a schedule each day, nap at a certain time. Etc. oh, I use the herm sprenger 2.25 collar with the leash, each time he mouths, a quick tug and a sharp no. Or leave it. Training by having her sit, then put a treat beside her paw, keep your hand over it and say firmly, “leave it”. Then take your hand away, repeat “leave it”. Then get her to look at you, then say okay, she can eat the treat. That teaches her to control her instincts, teaches self discipline to listen to you, it also helps stop her biting inhibitions. Hope this helps. This video is fantastic! I also think Tom Davis is good too. Good Luck!!!

You've answered some of the issue yourself - "she feeds off their energy"..High excitement, shrieking, screaming, running wildly around causes GSD particularly to get "OVER- stimulated and make GSD out of control....UNTIL they've learned bite inhibition and correct basic obedience _ AND are over a year. Please coach your children to remain calm and low key when the dog is around. Include your kids in the training as well.

I have a 10month old german shepherd, we've had about 4 or 5 shepherds but never as I say as biters, he is super hi drive, he is on the go all day and I'm home all day with him, we walk run ball everything, and gets corrected constantly, he's gotten a bit better but is always chewing something or my hand or arm and it's not vicious I call it mouthing and it drives me nuts, he's gotten better but it is a game with him, so just be consistent it will get better hopefully, he hasn't stopped fully but is better. Hopefully he stops soon, oh and he's not fixed yet so not sure if that comes into play also

He sounds exactly like my GS rescue. We got him at 5 1/2 months because he was too much to handle. I have been working with him each day like you, walking, playing, yes I have been injured, 😆 but always playful. He blew out my knee last year😫 and jumped on me in November in the couch (playing, but he is 115 pounds now) I had 2 eye surgeries for a torn retina, now have sciatica (from keeping my head down healing my eye) - anyway! I will not give up on Sweet Henry! He is 1 1/2, he still mouths my hand, but is better than he used to! The herm sprenger 2.25 collar has been a life saver! In the next couple of weeks (after my epidural block for this stupid sciatica) I am getting him neutered. He is 1 1/2 now. And since I have been working with him daily, he is a hit at Lowes, and our local pet store. He loves people, dogs. He just needs to calm down. I also use the pet calming treats, that helps! After he heals from neutering, I hope to enroll him in agility training. My husband says I spoil him, because he never mouths my husband, lol.

Ok so my Herman shepherd will be 2 in April, she went thru 6 weeks of training and we keep up with the training as much as possible, she has chewed toys, some she will destroy in 10 min. But the biting still continues especially towards my 24 year old son and when in training she was not able to be trained to stop jumping in windows every time someone comes over. This video was suppose to help with my adult dog but only seems to continue to talk about puppies! Not helpful
