The Guide elaborates on the techniques used on the show. The examples given in the kzbin.infoUgkxECnmSvBSv_NGWx4_ChD73pF3NYZwI2F3 are helpful and some of the techniques suggested very useful. One such technique/tool suggested was the lure stick to encourage a small dog to keep up with the heel command. I have a small dog who lags behind smelling any and everything and find it hard to keep bending over while walking to his level. The lure stick is great also for another dogs focus and sprinting at anything that catches her eye. The stories about different dogs, their different temperaments, have been helpful, especially Lulu's: After reading about Lulu's challenges I felt relief concerning one of my rescues that I have had for 10 years. Over many years I have checked out many training books from the library, watched different shows, DVDS, bought training books, taken lessons and this book is the best by far! Kindness, patience and perseverance works.

The parts of the guideare divided: part i know your dog part ii the seven commands part iii cures for 7 behavior problems. Each chapter presents a topic, a dog's story, and a "what to do". Very good advice. I’m so tired of people saying that if you don’t stop a puppy from biting they will continue as they grow up. I’ve had GSDs all my life. Every one has bitten my hands and ankles and anything else it could get a hold of. They definitely grew out of it. Enjoy your puppy, and let them be a puppy!

Finally someone says redirection does nothing for puppy biting. I've always thought that, and done the "I'm gonna make my hand in your mouth an uncomfortable experience until you're desperate to pull away" thing and it WORKS. With some breeds, they might grow out of it. But working dogs and herders/protectors especially will not get the point with simple redirection. It's bogus.

Yes agree redirect is just that. "Look at squirrel." Something we try to avoid in the real world. I used the tender spot method on my 11 week old Blue Lacy 2 times he was done with my hand. IMO, One has to make it uncomfortable for the dog or puppy to realize some masters don't like it either. If a dog only knows what you like, he is only getting 50% of his master.

I appreciate that you made this video even though you personally like puppy biting. I suspect that most of us don't. I also suspect that your puppies outgrow it because you are an excellent and experienced trainer otherwise. For those of us who are trying to raise a nice dog but don't have as much experience as you do, I think it is important to be able to stop the biting. I, for example, spend a lot of time training my pup, but I'm naturally soft spoken. My pup uses biting to challenge my authority. She learned to be gentle with her biting, but keeps testing to see who is boss. So, for mine it is important to stop the behavior entirely without rewarding her with a toy. I do give a toy before she starts biting. But for mine the jaw trick works better since she is looking to see who is dominant. The jaw technique gently says to her, "yeah, that would be me."

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I agree, the jaw trick can work really well for most dogs. :)

Very informative! I just got a German Shepard puppy, he's just under 3 months old and is allll teeth when he wants to play. I typically don't mind the gentle mouthing but when he gets especially riled up he tends to bite down harder which makes playtime particularly painful. The redirection helps keeps the teeth at bay but of course when I don't have a chew toy to defend myself with, it's back to the hands or feet.

Your training tips have assisted with training to raise my now year old incredible dog! Now have a 3 month old rescue and bead looking for a video on working through new puppy biting of other dog. When is it playing and then not playful and suggestions. As of now, separation has been the key go to as the puppy bites hairfuls out of my dog at times and so working through this as I know they will be best friends when puppitis is over but not wanting my dog to become reactive until then. Most of the time they are great together and play, supervised. When the zoomies begin, that is when playtime is not fun for all. Thought I would check to see if I missed a video on that or maybe something for you to consider in the future.

I tried the collar correction (based on the McCann method for this) and my 10 week old puppy started to not like me and act out. Then I talked to my local trainer who does positive reinforcement and redirection only and she pointed out the dogs body language when you “correct” which is really punishing and how scared and stressed a dog gets when you grab their collar like that or stick your hand in their mouth, so I stopped and now just give him lots and lots of praise when he’s doing literally anything that is chill or neutral and he’s become a really happy and obedient puppy that adores me and listens instead of fearing me. Definitely agree with the wait it out method, although I have a golden puppy with a great temperament so I recognize I’m lucky as some puppies are just defiant little a-holes who may not respond to only positive reinforcement.

Other reccomendations I find useful aside just not moving to become boring: Stand up and walk away in a way he cannot follow after crying out like a person that it hurt (come back shortly after) Cry out and stop playing or petting if he nibbles *too hard* - they become more tender/careful faster. I've read alot that you don't want to stop a puppy from biting too hard or fast since they're learning biting inhibition - first couple months = normal nibbling! Lastly, learn your dogs energy levels and body language - often you can calm things down before nibbling and keep it more managle to slowly teach em. Question: A friend grabs the muzzle firmly but not hard which seem to work as a dogs own correction/threat - what do you think about that and above suggestions? You're my go to trainer for training tips! I'm getting my puppy in 2 weeks.
@NateSchoemer4 жыл бұрын
These are great. The main thing is implementing the science of dog training. Not every technique will work on every dog. The walking away or crying out loud will work for some dogs, but not all dogs. Pinching the mouth will work on some dogs, but not all dog. It's about figuring out what works best for you and your dog. Thanks for the input, it's much appreciated!

@NateSchoemer3 жыл бұрын
f you want it to stop, you may need to add corrections to the pups training. Corrections in dog training is when we are using positive punishment to stop an undesired behavior. First, we must keep in mind that everything our dogs do is based on motivation. The motivation to access something pleasant, or the motivation to prevent something unpleasant. If your dog is practicing a behavior that is fun (self-reinforcing behavior), then you have two options to stop this. One; make sure to prevent the dog from being able to practice the undesired behavior. The second option is to use a correction to stop the behavior. A correction can be anything the dog doesn't like. So in the end, the motivation not to receive the correction must override the motivation to do the undesired behavior. If you use a correction and the undesired behavior continues, then the correction is not high enough. Here's an analogy to help understand this concept. It's important to remember that every dog has their bank account (their correction level). Some dogs are very wealthy, and some are penniless, just like people. Let's say that you are speeding down the highway and a police officer pulls you over and writes you a 25 cent-speeding ticket. The second the officer leaves, you will start speeding again because the ticket wasn't high enough to get you to change your behavior. But let's say he pulls you over and writes you a ten-million-dollar speeding ticket, now it's so high that you will avoid driving altogether, and you will be very stressed out. On the other hand, let's say he pulls you over and writes you a $125 speeding ticket. That would be enough to get you to slow down, without causing you to avoid the behavior of driving altogether. This is what we must do with our dogs; we need to correct them at a level that is adequate to their bank account. If the dog doesn't stop the bad behavior, then you may have to increase the correction. Just be sure to correct the dog in the act. In addition, proper corrections should not create a fearful dog. Usually fear when correcting a dog is due to the owner being angry, yelling at the dog, or correcting too hard. When we use a correction, it's simple cause and effect. A correction should never be personal and you should never yell at your dog. Once the correction is done, then we praise and reward our dog when they're doing what we like. If your dog knows why he/she is being corrected and knows how to prevent the correction from happening, then you shouldn't create any fear. Leash pop: This is when you make a snapping motion with the dog’s leash to engage the training-collar to give the dog a correction (a positive-punishment). If you're using a flat collar and that's not working, then you may need to use a prong collar or remote training collar to stop the behavior. You can learn more about it in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6jUkKatZd-AqJI

I'm not trying to stop the simple teething, I'm trying to stop the aggressive biting and rebuttal once corrected and lack of biting inhibition. The breeder lied about the birth date and I ended up with a 6 week old Rottie that was separated from his mother at 4 weeks. He is now 8.5 weeks. He responds aggressively to all forms of correction AND praise without control except for food. Once the food is gone, it's immediate attack mode. No toy hold his attention for more than 30 seconds. It's your arm, leg and clothing that he will chew on for hours.

How do we go about them biting our legs when walking. I can't even walk around my house without my puppy latching on. I don't want to hurt her, especially seeing sometimes she gets me mid step so she ends up getting yanked with my leg going forward.

If the puppy enjoys biting, then You may need to use a correction to stop the behavior. I would recommend the suggestion I talk about at the end of the video. Correcting the behavior with a quick leash pop. However, you should keep this in mind when adding corrections: Corrections in dog training is when we are using positive punishment to stop an undesired behavior. I hope this helps!

Hi Nate, I love your videos and the energy you have around adult dogs and puppies. My 8 week-ish old Doberman puppy is biting me a lot: hands, feet, clothes. We’ve had her for about a week. I can’t even pet her to say good job after she goes potty outside - she starts biting my hand. She does not exhibit this behavior with my husband though - she licks him instead! And oh am I jealous… Does that mean she doesn’t respect me? Is there something I can change in my behavior so she stops biting me?

I have so many cuts on my feet because of puppy biting. I tried using his fav toy as an alternate or used a biscuit to use it as an obedience trick, but nothing works in the evening. He becomes crazy and refuses to listen and continues hurting me. Sometimes I have hit him back and then regretted immediately, so I don’t know how to solve this issue.

I would then suggest the last option that I explain in this video. Using the leash and collar to correct the dog. First, you want to keep in mind that everything our dogs do is based on motivation. Hi Nate thanks for the tips. I have a 3 month old Labrador whose biting seems to be getting worse. I knew he would bite as a puppy because that is just what they do, but there seems to be a lack of bite inhibition. It's hard to tell if he's being aggressive or if he's just playing. He bites, and pulls! It hurts! My arms are torn up! It's biting 99% of the time. He bites pants and shorts as well. I've tried distracting him with toys (he gets bored and goes back to me), rewarding him after he stops biting, getting up and walking away (he follows me and bites my pants and shorts instead), going limp (this is near impossible since he bites hard and starts pulling), it is almost like he retaliates to the commands and gets worked up even more! I feel like I am doing something wrong or I am a bad owner. It's hard not to get frustrated. I do play tug of war with him but I might have to put an end to that because I think he thinks flesh is fair game. I know it's not his fault. Honestly if he only did this to me I would be okay with that haha, its other people I bring him around I want him to behave well and not bite constantly when I socialize him.

I've adopted a new one-year-old shelter dog, and he shows no sigms of stopping. In the interest of both self-preservation - it causes me pain - and his chances of passing the CGC, I need it to end. I would also hate for him to mouth a child and have the parent panic; bad things happen. I'll try the lower-jaw grab. Looks like my best bet.
@lisathewhitewolf4 жыл бұрын
Well, that method turned out to be wrong for this dog. Apparently he mouths out of a need to release tension, and taking the lower jaw as you suggested only made him a lot worse. I found a method that McCann Dogs uses, and it seems to work better. I'm also working on using a redirect to a chew toy, but I don't always have one in grabbing distance (need to fix that...), I had trained my older dog who passed recently (hence the new dog) to go get his toy when he got excited and direct his energies onto that instead of me or guests. I think I'm going to do the same with Lancelot - have him go get his toy when he feels overstimulated or tense.
@NateSchoemer4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what McCann dogs use, but if it's working, then excellent! If you really need to stop a behavior, then the fastest and easiest way is to use a physical correction. If I'm going to correct a dog, then a leash pop with a training collar will usually do the trick. I think this analogy will help you better understand how to use a correction: It's important to remember that every dog has their own bank account (their correction level). I would highly suggest listening to my free audiobook. I this book I teach the science of dog training, which is the most important thing to understand when training any dog. You can find the audiobook here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4PQe6GJrKyGarM I hope this helps and thanks for supporting my channel.
@lisathewhitewolf4 жыл бұрын
@@NateSchoemer Yeah. I'm not sure whether he panicked or thought I was playing rough with him, but taking his lower jaw caused an immediate and very sharp rise in intensity rather than giving him pause. The one that McCann's Dogs uses is more of a collar shake. It's getting through to him much better. Not saying your method doesn't work - just that for Lance, it proved to be the wrong approach. It wasn't like writing a ticket - more like the cop inviting him to street race!
@TheMithridates4 жыл бұрын
@@lisathewhitewolf Just be careful with the distracting using a chew toy, I believe from my limited experience that some dogs (smart ones especially) realize they can get a toy or play from nipping you. So, try to not continue playing or make the toy too exciting - it is only a distraction from you.

You may have to correct the bad behavior to stop it. Here's a section from my dog training manual that may be helpful. Corrections in dog training is when we are using positive punishment to stop an undesired behavior. First, we must keep in mind that everything our dogs do is based on motivation. The motivation to access something pleasant, or the motivation to prevent something unpleasant. If your dog is practicing a behavior that is fun (self-reinforcing behavior), then you have two options to stop this: • One: Preventing the dog from practicing the undesired behavior. • Two: Using a correction to stop the behavior. A correction can be anything the dog doesn't like. So, in the end, the 58 motivation not to receive the correction must override the motivation to do the undesired behavior. If you use a correction and the undesired behavior continues, then the correction is not high enough. Here's an analogy to help understand this concept: Imagine every dog has a bank account (their correction level). Some dogs are very wealthy, and some are penniless, just like people. Let's say that you are speeding down the highway and a police officer pulls you over and writes you a 25 cent-speeding ticket. Sounds like you have a very cute puppy! :) Start in an environment with less distractions and use meal time as training time. Don't feed him out of a bowl during the training phase. Make him work for every bite. This will increase his motivation to train. You should also check out the basic obedience series. The series is designed to be watched in order. If you want to have a clear understanding of dog training and develop the essential skills needed to fix the majority of issues that dog owners face, start with episode one and work your way through. In addition, you’ll discover a greater relationship with your dog, as you now have the tools to address the bad behaviors that may have frustrated you or pushed you further away from your companion. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mZSbmYtqoah6n7s I hope this helps and thanks for supporting the channel! :)

I wanted to ask that in some videos when you reward the dog and they drop the treat, you don't let them take that treat off the ground by stepping on it. Why is that? and under what conditions should one practice that?
@NateSchoemer4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, If you always let the dog pick up dropped food from the ground, then the dog will start constantly be looking on the ground for dropped food and it will distract them from the training. If the dog is more focused on the trainer, then they will learn faster.
