Some actors nowadays are quite happy to just sit in a recording booth and let stuntmen/CGI do all the work for them. Well not Willem Dafoe, who insisted that he be the Green Goblin as much as possible.

And that is where the similarities of Urban's performance and the source material ended. Karl never actually understood the character, although the original Judge Dredd never could make onto the big screen. Urban was too human, had too much emotions, and never embodied the dark humor of JD. Sly was better Dredd, although the movie itself sucked. Urban's Dredd had way better script and direction, and that's why his performance stands out like a sore thumb.

Karl Urban is a cute soap opera actor with no actual acting skills. He ruins the illusion every time with his half-assery. It's kinda fun to see him try and fail, but he tries to breathe life into characters that matter, it's just sad.

I bspriefly met Mr. Dafoe after this movie was released. I was at an ice cream shop in Florida with my (grown son) and mentioned that I liked his work, as we were speaking two young boys about 8-10 years old spied him. They were whispering together and looking at him but were too shy to speak. He waved them over and spent a good amount of time speaking to them. They were, of course, thrilled and couldn't believe they were talking to the Green Goblin. He was a very reserved man but took time out of his day to speak to these boys on their level. It was very nice to see and just made me like him even more.

People didn't think Mark Hamil would have been a good choice for the Joker either. He came in for a bit part on the Batman cartoon and asked to try and well, you don't say no to Luke Skywalker (at least in the 90's/early 2000's) and he blew it out of the water. His characterization, the voice carrying that terrifying madnes, and the laugh.... Ledger was wonderful but Hamil is the true joker.

Honorable mention to actors who cared about their super-hero roles: Brandon Lee in The Crow He could've just coasted on his fame as Bruce Lee's kid and basically portray a slightly more gothic batman knock off. Instead he worked hard to show the torment and sorrow of Eric Draven, adding heart and depth to what could've been just another gritty comic book flick. The last interview he had, he told everyone how glad he was to have taken the part and help express the message of the movie: "That nothing is trivial."

They were very Spider-Man; if you read the comics, they do tend to be on the more humourous side, the man himself often being written as the king of snark. The Amazing Spider-Man films, on the other hand, were too serious. And actually, it's something that Marvel has nailed in their films, they've managed to inject Spider-Man's goofyness into the overall more serious MCU in a way that feels natural (likewise with the Guardians). Well, Spider-Man 3 was a bit of a hot mess, but that's what happens when you have too many antagonists.

Tobey Maguire was such a good Spiderman *_because_* he played Peter Parker as he was supposed to be. An awkward shy teenager. Not some outgoing extrovert who is friends with anybody and everybody.

Remember when Dafoe played Ryuk after over a decade of fans calling for him to play it the role for a live-action movie whenever it came out? I wonder if it was worth it or if Dafoe actually cared?

For actors that really cared, even if it wasn't a superhero movie, Raul Julia deserves an honorable mention for the effort he put into Street Fighter. (He also treated Addams Family seriously.)

Karl, thanks for the quote from Scooby Doo. Kid you not, I quote that "What up dog? And, uhhhh dog?" bit more than any other movie line. (Except maybe "I missed the part where that's my problem" from Raimi-Man 1)

To be fair, Cameron Monaghan was also praised about his "not-joker-but-actually-yes-he-is" portrayal in Gotham. It did derail, but that's more a writer's issue than the portrayal of the actor.

let's not forget Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool for actors who understand the role and give it their all. He wanted to play deadpool for years before they finally gave the movie the go ahead and he nailed the character. I dont think many actors could pull off the deadpool movies as well as he does. Thank you Ryan for making our dreams come true!

That scene where Norman Osborne picks up a marshmallow off the top of the thanksgiving sweetpotates and aunt Mae slapped his hand. Willem Dafoe gives aunt Mae a look like imma kill you old lady. That is the best comic book scene in my opinion.

I think one of the best scenes of JK Simmons in the Raimi Spiderman movies was in the extended cut of spiderman 2 after he got the thrown away suit. He locks himself in his office, turns off the lights and shuts the blinds and goes around the room in the suit pretending to be spiderman.
