Can-opening thin metal roofs prob doesn't bother it much, but every now and then there's a truck carrying a crane or some other kind of very solid heavy equipment and the crash beam handles it with aplomb!

What I don't understand is why they dont dig 4 feet of dirt away and lay the road lower. Ounce of prevention, pound of cure because there will always be morons who have no clue of what they are driving in. Who pays for that? The ocmmunity, and their bonus is that the viaduct is not closed off for half a day, every two days.
@skylerjr2648
@skylerjr2648 6 ай бұрын
@@paulmichaelfreedman8334Easier said than done. First, the railroad is who owns the bridge and who would pay for it. In order to dig they first have to verify if that's even an option. Water, sewer, power, etc could all be running under that road. On top of rerouting rail traffic which could cost them millions all said and done. When the simple solution is idiots paying attention. It literally has a sign that lights up long before you enter that tells you if you are too tall. You don't even need to know your height, just how to pay attention.

At some bridges I've seen them put a row of short chains hanging down from overhead a little way before the bridge. If you hear them brushing against the roof of your vehicle as you drive under it then you have time to stop before you reach the bridge and cause damage, because the chains do hardly any damage compared to actually hitting the bridge (especially when reversing out again). I think more bridges need those to alert everyone who doesn't take notice of the signs.

@@_gingerale_ Licenses go based on weight of vehicle, not height. There's reasons for this, mainly due to maneuverability and bridge carrying capacities. On a regular license it is absolutely doable to drive a large moving truck for example without training. And most of the time the driver will have no issue turning, backing up, etc. Technically all drivers are responsible for knowing the height of their vehicle- it just doesn't really come up for normal cars and SUVs so it basically goes ignored

Nah - that's how they make their money! You rent a truck to some poor sap, tell him he's liable for any damages - and tell him, "All bridges in town are dangerous . . . except the always friendly 11-foot-8. That one's a breeze with room to spare. Ignore the flashing warning sign - and have a safe trip, Chester!" 😸

Probably. As a Frequent Visitor to Hawaii, I'm familiar with a place called Ka'ena Point on the northwest tip of Oahu. The roads leading to the point, itself, from both direction deteriorate into just trails. The car rental agreement makes you promise not to drive there. Certain vehicles have selected exceptions. (Sherman Tank, D-9 CAT, etc. 😁)

I absolutely loved this. I used to live in Durham and actually witnessed a truck get its roof ripped real bad and wedged. The driver got out looked clueless. Obviously didn’t understand rule #1- Know how tall your tuck is (hint its posted in most truck cabs) Rule # 2 Look at height warning signs. Rule #3 remember rule #1. If the max height of your vehicle, trailer , cargo is is unknown, make it known, measure it and don’t be a dummy. Human nature being what it is I expect we will continue to enjoy many more videos of self inflicted idiots at 11’8”

Learning where your truck height is posted on your vehicle is one of the first things you learn in CDL training, as well as looking for clearance checks. There's absolutely no excuse for these accidents, and its not surprising that a lot of these involve the drivers also running the red light.

If you look carefully, it's not the bridge itself. There's a VERY sturdy crossbar set up right in front of it, which is what the trucks are hitting: it either stops the truck cold or peels off anything that's high enough to hit the bridge. Either way, the bridge stays completely undamaged (which you definitely want when there are freight trains going over it) and someone just has to replace that crossbar every so often.

My uncle who just turned 100 owned 3 trucking businesses. The only ever mishap he had was leaving a milk tank trailer improperly secured at 2 am whilst having to reverse his truck to pump milk in a tight location. Trailer broke loose and damage a house. He choose 1 day jail to avoid loosing his license.( that was in Switzerland around 50 years ago) Sometimes I wonder why US trucks do not have a huge sign on the dash given the clearance?

It's surprising what trucks do and don't, ALL school buses are required to have them in my state as are all commercial chassis emergency vehicles, they have it printed in bold above the windshield, there's a bridge nearby that a few of our trucks can't go through, the rig itself clears but the overhead emergency lights or water cannons won't, some fckwit found that out the hard way, destroyed a $3K state-of-the-art light bar that was designed to be low profile but wasn't low enough to clear that particular bridge
@maxkronader5225
@maxkronader5225 2 жыл бұрын
Because it is a clear requirement to obtain a commercial driver's license in the US that you know the height of any truck you are driving. You are supposed to verify the height of your vehicle with a tape measure during your pre-trip inspection if you've never driven that truck/load before.

Wow -the crash beam visibly moves on its mountings at 03:30. That is some momentum. I wonder who cleans up the displaced crud - is there an enterprising scrap metal dealer nearby? I guess that aluminium scrap is valuable...

How is there NOT a bar across the street from this, I don't know. Literally would sit, drink and watch this shit from 50 feet away, all day.

2:57 the camper dude ran the red light plain as day. And proceeded to shave off his ac units. That had me busting out laughing.

The trick is to get some good momentum… if you are going 55mph or faster, you can make it through to the other side and not get stuck

I hate that the bridge was raised. It's like, yeah I get why they did it, but these were some of the most entertaining videos ever. I always was looking forward to the next one. At least the bridge still has a snack from time to time, just not nearly as often anymore.

The Montague Bridge in the city I live in; Melbourne, Australia is notorious for truck crashes. This light rail bridge sits at only 3.0 meters or 9' 10" tall.

Thare's a bridge in Melbourne Australia with a 9' 10" clearance, so your 11' 8" or 12' 4" as it is now, is sheer luxury.

This is in Durham, NC. They added a censor to start turning the light red when trucks that would wreck pull up, but instead of stopping to read all the signs, they gas it to beat the light change
