Director William Friedkin, whose films include The Exorcist and To Live and Die in L.A., calls 1952's The Bad and the Beautiful (Kirk Douglas stars as a producer) the best film he's seen about Hollywood, and credits it for teaching him how to make a horror movie. He was participating in a Zócalo/Getty panel at the Getty Museum as part of the Pacific Standard Time initiative with director Thomas Andersen and critics Kenneth Turan and Richard Schickel, moderated by Los Angeles Times staff writer Reed Johnson.
