The fact that Will took the time to build a full op amp circuit for a temperature detecting proximity sensor that triggers a flamethrower instead of just using an ultrasonic sensor or LIDAR comepletely stunlocked me. Never change, Big Willy

Ultrasonic or LIDAR would trigger on any moving object. Temperature detecting sensors will trigger on warm bodies. Also, it gives it a free dead band. If the flamethrower comes on and is sensed by the heat detector, that will just keep the heat detector on for a period of time (to thoroughly burn your victim) until the running average is saturated at the burning temperature, then it'll stay off for a fixed period until your running average has had time to return to ambient.

It definitely has higher design complexity, and would be difficult to tune the detection correctly to prevent false positives, which is why we see it triggering in the video on nothing. IMO, motion detection is a better approximation for detecting people, as it would be far more trivial to code and design around. Also, blasting flames at anything that moves is just funny
