In the 1960s ,70s and 80 s Cape verdians invaded Sénégal in search of good living conditions. They were mainly painters . Thousands of them were welcome , some of their descendants are still here in Dakar in some neighbourhoods. Even the current Mayor of Dakar is of Cape verdian origins. Most Senegalese had the same stereotypes towards capeverdians . The same they have currently vis a vis Sénégalese. 😂 Then Cape verde was dirt poor

I am positive that the Portuguese started this division among Africans in Cape Verde. Just like the Caucasians here in the US created division, and hatred among our shades of black. They taught us to hate our blackness. I must admit with cape Verde being In the west African region of the continent where the majority is black this approach seemed to have backfired. It is still has the stench of racism. The worst kind of racism in my opinion is self racism. The dislike and hatred of oneself. For example black on black crime in the US. I almost forgot to mention the Rwandan genocide.

@@TRUEkcctv1384 Wow! Where did you get this history from? #1 The Portuguese discovered the islands in 1456, and they were uninhabited then. #2 Ferdinad and Izabella were from Spain and had nothing to do with Cape Verde; you must be thinking of the Canary Islands. Yes, it became a hub for the slave trade, with the enslaved traveling from Africa to the Americas. The Portuguese outlawed slavery in 1761. Please cite your sources! You got your history totally wrong! This is just lousy research, if any! Any Indians that ended up in Cape Verde came from Portuguese ships as they would always stop in Cape Verde, coming and going as they traveled to India and Japan. Many sailors took on wives from their ocean passages abroad and returned to Cape Verde. The Island nation has a solid maritime tradition. I definitely should know; my family owned a few of these ships. And I wish to return because we still own property there. It has also become a hot spot for European vacationers. Here in the U.S., there is a vast Cape Verdia population, large enough that The government has senators at large representing the diaspora in the U.S.
@SubServ637
@SubServ637 5 күн бұрын
@@TRUEkcctv1384 You are totally wrong. Addressing misinformation is essential, especially when it concerns the history and identity of people, such as those from Cape Verde. Your claims are not only inaccurate but also misrepresent the complex history of the Cape Verdean people. First, Cape Verde was uninhabited before the Portuguese discovered it in the 15th century. There is no historical evidence to support the idea that the inhabitants of Cape Verde are descendants of American Indians or that they were captured and exiled to these islands, as you describe. The islands were colonized by the Portuguese, who settled there. Over the years, a unique Creole culture developed due to mixed African and Portuguese ancestry rather than a direct connection to American Indian tribes. Secondly, the notion that the Portuguese who fled to Cape Verde during the Spanish Inquisition were captured American Indians is unfounded. Many Portuguese individuals who faced persecution during the Inquisition did emigrate. Still, their movements were primarily within the context of European and African histories, not involving the forced movement of American Indians, as you imply. Furthermore, the assertion that the Cape Verdean people are a direct mix of American Indians and Portuguese oversimplifies their identity. Cape Verde's population is predominantly of mixed African and Portuguese descent, established through the Atlantic slave trade and colonization dynamics, not through the transference of American Indian groups. If you make claims about such a sensitive topic, it's your responsibility to cite credible sources that support your assertions. Please provide references to historical documentation or academic research that backs up your statements, as they currently stand as a misrepresentation of Cape Verdean history. Misinformation like this perpetuates stereotypes and undermines the rich cultural identity of the Cape Verdean people. Your narrative diminishes the true historical context of Cape Verde and ignores the critical impact of colonization and the transatlantic slave trade. History should be accurately represented, not distorted through unfounded claims.

I am from Mozambique, also an ex Portuguese colony. Cape Verdeans were employed by the Portuguese colonial government as government employees in a complicated burocratic System. That’s because most Cape Verdeans were literate and had basic Portuguese education degree. Same for Goans (Portuguese India). Those Cape Verdeans that managed to get a government employment usually chose to migrate to another Portuguese colony because Cape Verde was so poor. Most prefered Angola, a very rich territory. Finally, in 1975 when it gained independence, Cape Verde had the highest literacy rate of Africa. 90% of the population could read and write. Also all Cape Verdeans have Portuguese blood running in their veins.

For some reason, I had high expectations that learning more about Cape Verde would convince me to visit. Unfortunately, I found it to be less engaging than I had hoped. The discussions seemed divisive, and I got the impression that some individuals were distancing themselves from their true identity. While every country has its complexities, it left me feeling disconnected from the culture. The terrain seems a bit dry too. To Willie, the presenter, i liked the honesty with your full disclosure. I was however a bit disappointed by how you handled the discussion with the young woman. It seemed like an opportunity to explore deeper perspectives was missed, and I also felt like there was a subtle attempt to distance yourself from your African heritage in favor of an American identity. I was hoping for a more balanced conversation that embraced both aspects of your roots.

You cannot say you are not African because you are culturally different from 1 (mentioned country) within Africa. The prejudice must be challenged and education should be encouraged for people to know and stop the nonsense. How on earth does this conversation even exists ? because certainly its a problem that exist. People don't come up with random topics for the sake of fun. Its very common from Portuguese colonies with very few exceptions. If a Nigerian, Ghanaian, Jamaican, Zambian, Bostwana are born in the UK, you will only know if they produce their passport or Drivers License. @@eliseoellis3863 you can. You can have mixed cultures. im glad some of africa heritage as survived! Ethiopia never was conquered, most of inner areas were only explored later on .. portugal just crossed litoral. I think cape verdians are very different from brasilian, there is a ceraptain thing when you live your life in a island. Their kinda embrace their culture, their love their music with several flavors, kinda lool alike cuban, that is incredible rich.. and this can be a methaphor for other things different then music, such as food. At the end, incondemn alot of things that were made in the colonies. But if you search about testimony of portuguese colonial people, you will se most didnt wanted to go to war. Portugal was under a regime, such as during colony empire. Alot of them white ones were enslaved too. There were no democracy or simillar. You should also consider the impact that muslim countrys had in our african ancestory, they basically were the first to enslave and converting people.

@@Eueqorogu Sorry I am struggling to get your point. If you look at the top 4 mixed race countries in Africa - Cape Verde does it come in it. With probably Ethiopia, Eritria, South Africa, Mauritius and so on. None of which have any interest in claiming they are not African. I was born in Spain, raised in London. My 5th Generation grand father was an AFRICAN-American, who returned to Africa after US President James Monroe allowed freed slaves to return to Liberia, my Maternal 5 Generation grand Mother was the same, After England allowed freed slaves to return to Sierra Leone. Civil war would force both my great grandpas to leave Liberia and Sierra Leone and move to "Port Clarence" an Island which is now known as Malabo in West African country of now Equatorial Guinea. They met there and got married and have my mother, my mother grew up there and moved to Spain in the mid 70s and had us in Spain. Now you tell me how much of a mix is that. But yet, I have no interest in saying I am anything other than African. Prejudice is indeed a problem which can be combat with Education.

, These cape Verde people are American Indians who where captured by the Portuguese who where exiled out of Portugal and Spain during the spanish inquisition, these Portuguese where exiles and forced out of there country either flee due to religious persecution or forced into slavery and shipped to Africa as slave by royal decree of King Ferdinand and queen ezabella, and when they continue in there hebrew practice they where exiled from Africa by decree of King George, many fled to America these Portuguese, and enslaved many American indian tribes who dare to rebel against the Portuguese colonization. The Portuguese took some 100 to 1000 or so American indian and shipped them to cape Verde and that's how cape Verde and even Sierra Leon was founded . These cape Verde people are not African nor slavic whites aka peons or slavis . The cape people are American indian and brown skin Portuguese mixtures .

Two weeks later, he had to get BW to endorse his ticket to AV and he flew home through Bogotá with me, going on to Toronto! BW had pulled the plug on Brazilian service.

There used to be a lot of cape verdeans in Dakar/Senegal. There are still quite a few but they had this discrimination ingrained in them. They love satus and their women would mostly date powerful Senegalese men and rich businessmen. Since they're mostly mixed in a country full of black people and Senegalese men mostly love them light skin so it was rare to see a cape verdean woman with a broke man. Even in churches they didn't want to mingle with other Senegalese unless they were moneyed. Everything is mostly about status and money for them. Other black immigrants from Senegal, Guinea Bissau face a lot of discrimination in Cape Verde.

You mention that unlike African Americans, Cape Verdeans don’t follow the one drop rule in which those of mixed heritage are automatically identified as Black. I just wanted to note that both the one drop rule and the Cape Verdean system, which goes by the color of their skin, are remnants of Racism. In the American system the whites discriminated against those of mixed heritage who they thought had their blood poisoned by blackness and were not considered white. In the case of Cape Verdeans it’s self discrimination, in which those with lighter skin idetified as white which would give them advantages and privileges in society.

as capeverdian, im disappointed with this video. u'r NOT showing the true beauty of women here without sexualizing every single one..its a shame 2. there's a lot great places that sell great seafood here and one of them is "old city" ...they have great octopus there...and other places too 3. taxis here r not expensive. at least in santiago..it is "expensive" only from the airport to the city and vice versa..inside the city is usualy around 1.50€ to 5€ but it hardly gets to 5€ depending on where u goin..and the "mini bus" is commonly referred to as "Hiace" AND IMPORTANTLY , abt us not liking to date west africans its not very commom , yes, but there r people dating continental africans..its more of a cultural shock rather than simply not wanting to mix with them..please next time interview a variety of people cause u cant just interview 2 to 5 people to generalize bcs this is not it! And focus on the younger demographic rather than the more close minded adults.

Although Portuguese is our official language, most people in CV use criolo to communicate, and some older people can't even express themselves well in Portuguese. It is not a form of discrimination, we use kriolo everywhere, starting from our home, and we use Portuguese in more formal situations such as media, press, school, etc. I learned Portuguese at home but a significant amount of capeverdeans learned it in school, so when people speak criolo they aren't refusing to speak Portuguese or discriminating others. It is also about how we value our own language that actually came from resisting the Portuguese slave owners and colonizers. In the past, we were forbidden to use it. Regarding the dating scenario, we Capeverdean people prefer to date among ourselves, not sure if that's bad or not but that's what we prefer unless when we live abroad or on more tourist islands. About the locals not dating some street vendors, well I think the dating scenario for them could be hard in many other countries, not only in Cape Verde but I'll agree that some individuals can indeed be xenophobic (which is the minority).
