Compared to the split phase MPP Inverters you already have, do you believe the features of this Victron system, combined with split phase dual inverters, is worth the additional cost? Obviously, the real value feature here is the Victron Remote Management Portal for remote access.

I bypassed the switching power supply on all my devices that use 12v DC, instead of using an inverter, and I must say I get about 8x the life from my batteries by doing this. If we’re serious about reducing our power consumption then I believe every solar setup should come with a 12v DC source and devices that can hook directly to it. That would reduce the entire planets consumption of electricity by an insane amount.
@LiLBitsDK

that would be where you use the Victron Orion-TR that does DC-DC and yes bypassing inverter/switching power supply removes a LOT of inefficiencies, so well worth doing.

very good video! Nice, simple, and to the point! I see that you dont actually have a BMS connected is that because the SOK batteries have their own BMS built in so you arent going to worry about it? Also what is the purpose of the Distributor? is it just to hold fuses and check if they have blown? why does it need smarts?

Nice summary Will. I presume the Multiplus will bypass shore power, meaning the inverter turns off and uses shore power, instead of using the batteries to provide AC. If that's the case, the AC line going to the Multiplus II should be a 4 wire 10 gauge connection I think, using three phase for an RV setup for 50A shoreline service, correct?

A person wanting to build a 1,00Ah, 12V bank without Lithium might use five 200Ah, 12V Lead batteries in parallel, but Victron's document "Wiring Unlimited" suggests that one should avoid having more than 3 or 4 parallel strings in a bank, perhaps by switching (in this case) to six 1,000Ah 2V OPzV batteries wired in series. What do you think of OPzV batteries?

Do you lose anything by not having a control connection between the inverter / charger and the batteries? I know Victron has (very expensive) batteries with dedicated communication cables to connect to their BMS... Will. I’m a proud Victron user and I’m glad you’re including their products on your channel. One thing I think you should mention is that people don’t need to purchase an entire Victron system at one time. Each device/component can operate independently of the others and you can slowly add devices to build your system as your needs and budget allow. The final point that I think is worth mentioning is that one of the great strengths of the Victron ecosystem is the integration of products so that you have single point monitoring and control over Bluetooth, WiFi, or internet. I’m looking forward to more from you on Victron.

You can over panel most solar inverters? You just can’t exceed the voltage limits. It’s common practice here to set up 6.6kW of panels on a 5kW inverter. The little bit you lose over a year’s solar is negligible. I have 9.2kW of panels on an 8kW SolarEdge inverter. I could over rate it by 30% if I wanted to.

The cheapest way to get enough redundance in an off grid system at latitudes with dark winters is to overpanel - even radically. My own Smart Solar 30/100 works very well with 250 percent panel effect, and I would like to even have some more. The SM just takes it's 30 amps and ignores the rest on the sunny days. Wonder if there is a limit? I haven't seen any mention of it from Victron.

On my 27' sailboat, I've got a 2000W MultiPlus II inverter/charger, a cerbo, a 15A solar controller (not much room for panels on a small boat), a couple of smart shunts (I'm a telemetry geek), and then I have the Victron integrated with my alternator controller (wakespeed) and my BMS (REC ABMS). I chose to go down the Victron path early as I wanted the remote view and also full control of all my components from wherever I am. They are not cheap but the products and service you get are amazing. I have my Multiplus running for 2 weeks now and it is really the best inverter out there. It will cope with all kind of different setups and installations, on-grid, off-grid, mobile installations in a boat or RV, no problem. With the assistants you can get the Multiplus to pretty much do everything. I like the AC-out2 function when it for example can turn on your water heater (or EV-charger) if the battery is full but there is still enough solar coming in. I have now also successfully daisy chained two inverters in series with one being the Multiplus. It takes the output of pretty much any inverter as the AC input and can add up to 5kVA on top what the first inverter already delivers. What a powerful system 💪 I've got the Linx system already here for the next project, Shunt, Distributor and Power-in. It will be so much easier than the battery shelf 😂 Thanks for another great video, Will 🍻 Edit: Oh, I forgot, you can also easily connect (almost) any other BMS via RS485 to the Victron system and can then slow down charging if on cell gets out of balance until the balancer has caught up.

They can connect through Bluetooth to each other. My battery sence sends the voltage and temperature to the smart solar mppt. If you also use a smart shunt it will take the voltage from there and only use the temperature from the battery sense. The shunt will send the current and voltage to the smart solar charger in this case. You have to put all your devices into the same Bluetooth smart network through the victron app, very easy to do. But this is only for the device to talk to each other, if you what to use a cerbo gx or a raspi with Venus os you have to use the cable connections. Victron equipment really has sold me on eventually swapping out all my gear for theirs. The way they design their systems is ultimately more flexible and feature rich than anything else on the market. You can tell that an integrated IT style approach was taken to system layout/setup/UI development. Intuitive, well organized, easy to read and comprehend, connections are a snap, no additional config involved... EASY first timer learning curve. That is how you design good gear. Really top notch. And the Expandability? Wow. Cerbo GX looks like a VERY Custom SoC with all of its GPIO an IO dedicated to specific Victron devices and uses. Its actually a little computer with a custom OS from the look of it. That monitor, I would venture a guess, is likely just a standard HDMI / USB touch screen. And any screen of the same format should also work without modification. (Say in case you wanted to go larger) But this would have to be confirmed by someone like Will who already has the device. Beyond all that... You can easily start a Victron system cheap, with only a smartshunt 500 and a charge controller, and then grow that system to any size your wallet can imagine :-) Its not cheap gear for sure... But its DAMN GOOD. So It makes up for it! Some very nice equipment, and the increase in safety factor with all the inter-device communication, is just off the charts. Most of us working with large format batteries and electricity are all about safety, and if you are too, Victron gear is absolutely some of the safest gear you can buy to watch your pack and your system. Thank you Will for the detailed walkthrough on the Victron communications system and the Cerbo GX.

@@evanwindom3265 With lithium... for me at least, I tend to think about the location of the batteries as far as the level of gear I might need. Are these batteries in a Home or Garage? Do you and your family sleep there? How often is someone there to monitor the system and check for issues? Is the circuitry wrapped around the scenario of enough quality to avoid heat issues entirely? (Typically overbuilt by 50-75% nominal load is safe. Less is not) How much Solar is coming in? Less than 1000w = not a problem for cheapo gear. 2000+w = you should probably be using better charging gear and combiners/breakers If its in a shed 100ft from your house and its a 4 pack of lithium 100ah cells... Any gear works. If its in your home, and you sleep there, or are away long periods, the level of monitoring does and WILL matter. Lithium has a VASTLY different explosive potential than most people think. It burns SUPER HOT, and is virtually impossible to extinguish without a powdered chemical ABC extinguisher. (Water is BAD BAD BAD on ANY electrical fire, especially a lithium fire. As it will flash boil and some free hydrogen will burn/explode, splattering you with molten lithium.) Even a cell phone battery can make a fireball about the size of a keg of beer at over 1000c at the source. Aka = insta-fire if not monitored by something you TRUST with your LIFE. Lithium is bad mojo when its angry. Lithium says "You wouldn't like me when i'm angry" LoL Also, Pro Tip, the CerboGX os is open source and is freely available. You can build your own from a mini PC and save 400-500$ to get started. That and a shunt and you have at least SOME monitoring. Temp sensors. Then a decent BMS for charge state monitoring and balancing. Whola, Safe and good to go. Also, Marine 300amp quick battery disconnects are VERY good for large format lithium packs. Safe. Been using them for YEARS without issue. No failures, no shocks, no Mr. Sparky. ;-)
