RPE and RIR can be used interchangeably. It is just a way to regulate you from bulling yourself and taking every exercise in every session to RPE 10 and literally digging yourself a hole and overtraining. For more advanced lifters the more important some form of auto regulation is because overtraining is a real thing and you do not ever want to be there. There are other ways to auto regulate of course though.

Nah, there are submaximal loads that are not an RPE 10 but are a 0 RIR. They are not the same, though they often are close.

@@cheeks7050 that is what .5s are for though. RPE doesn't have to be exact for programming to be effective and it really cant anyways. You cant even tell what RPE you are doing exactly even with a tendo unit. Some people are better at grinding than others. Look at the lifters doing submaximal RPE programming in powerlifting that are breaking records with that style of training. That is how they train now almost all sets are RPE 7-8 and a ton of sets.
