Thank you for providing nostalgia over the old tone wood wars. It was the only time guitar KZbin was actually fun. Sad it had to end 😢.

One thing I’ve learned is to never ever ever let the lumberyard select wood for you if you go somewhere and they try to not let you dig through the pile yourself just leave.
@Joe-mz6dc3 ай бұрын
I worked in a hardware store in the '80s yes I am old, but having said that even the concept of not allowing the customer to choose their own wood is ridiculous to me.

Oh, it’s a thing. I have gone to a couple of hardwood dealers and been told some variation of you have to take whatever is on top and can’t go digging through the pile and I’ve just turned around and left immediately without even looking.

i do cabinetry professionally with my dad, and build a few guitars on the side. Our lumber supplier is usually pretty good. Some times estimated bf is higher than the billed total (my dad has done business with them for over 30 years). However, whenever they bring on new hires, there will almost always be at least one order that gets pulled wrong. They are good about fixing those orders, but you always have to check. Honestly the worst thing to buy (which doesn't apply to guitars) Is ply wood. Sometimes you get a bundle that was never unbanded, and you end up with severely damaged veneers in the middle of the stack. Wind shake can also ruin a piece of dimensionally correct wood. we had half a stack of white oak delivered once that had to be sent back, because excessive wind shake made it useless. Also Nominal size of lumber usually is dependent on whether you buy surfaced, or rough. rough is usually over nominal, or the majority of the rough thickness is over nominal. we get 4/4 maple surfaced and straight-lined, and it always is consistently 13/16. We get 5'4 rough and then plane it ourselves. It usually is close 6/4 when rough, but finishes at or around 1 1/4" when planed and surfaced. If you're being sold rough lumber under nominal your being ripped off.

I worked for a few years at a hardwood lumber yard in the mid 80's. The grading system for hardwood basically goes by yield out of board feet. It's graded out and separated using a tally stick when it's in rough sawn form (how it comes from the sawmills). FAS means firsts and seconds (highest grade). S&B means select and better (next grade down). Then it goes to #1 common, #2 common etc. I've seen #5 common which are pieces you would make small things like knife handles. People think there are different qualities to wood. A piece the size of a toothpick or the size of a table are the same wood, just "yield" difference. When you buy a 3/4" board, you are paying for 1". 1" board you're paying for 5/4 (1-1/4") etc. Anything thinner than 3/4 is re-sawn. You usually have to request it and pay for it. Lumber is sold to the public after it's been run through a planer that sizes and "cleans it up". That is referred to as "S2S" (surface 2 sides) so, the missing 1/4" is part of the planing process that you are not charged for, see? What does a 2x4 measure? S3S is surface 3 sides and is run through a ripsaw to put a straight edge on the board. Cabinet makers generally order it this way, so they have a straight edge to measure from. So, a 2x4 is... you guessed it! S4S. S4S can also be cleaned up rough edges (not parallel) Generally it's sized boards. I know this is long winded but, hopefully it will clear up some of the mysteries. P.S. Thanks to guys like bald limey Ben Crow and others who scream "EVERYBODY BUILD GUITARS!" have kind of ruined things. So, tons of people call lumber yards asking for guitar wood and they are more than happy to sell you some! Just don't forget to bring some KY with you when you pay for it! 😆😅😂🤣

19:50 there it is, all you need to know. If it's a stable piece of wood with decent grain and no knots or warping it's 'instrument' grade.

Great video. I would like to share something about getting wood. Years ago I had a muzzleloader with a stock made of swamp ash root and that thing sounder better than any rifle I ever owned.
@WillsEasyGuitar3 ай бұрын
it has more to do with how it was built than what wood was used. also, over time we lose our hearing using muzzle loaders.

I'm really lucky my local lumber yard is very cool. They always round down. But always keep your wits about you because mistakes can be made.

I always bring a tape measure to the dealer and measure it myself and will pick through the whole stack if needed to get a clean board. Been screwed just like Will described previously.

You can demand that they actually work out the exact volume of the wood or board foot. Easy to calculate and if you’re buying expensive high quality lumber you should calculate your own volume

Sucks for the hobby builder. It’s cheaper to just buy a built body which is not what I want. So my return on investment is non existing. Looking forward to your website. And more videos. New sub.

If you have land with trees, the tree guys will certainly try to screw you as well if you are having some harvested. Find a tree broker to calculate your board feet and figure the current rates for each species. That way you don't get totally screwed and the broker will certainly get his or her cut, otherwise you will get hosed.

Yep. Some are honest. Some are scammers. And some just aren't the brightest bulbs in the room. I've probably been over charged. I've also had them joint 2 sides for me, and screw it up. Sometimes ya just gotta do things yourself.

I thought tonewood was made up...and most of it is....but I tried the same pickups on an alder body and a basswood body and the basswood def sounded thinner. Not by much, but it was noticeable. Not that big a deal tho.

Oo! Oo! 💕 I’ve been curious about using redwood, Will. I suppose you’ll offer ‘tops/caps’ on more pricey woods?
@WillsEasyGuitar3 ай бұрын
redwood is a really soft wood. softer than pine sometimes. I would avoid it.

Derek is pretty consistent with that. I believe the grading system is based on flames or quilt compressions per inch or something like that. Then you get guys like Jeff Kiesel oh man that's a 7A grade lol on every piece.
