I have a Galaxy too. The good old indestuctible WGR modells either with the VW TDIs or the 2,0l or 2,3l petrolengine. Last of with is comfortbly propelling my Spaceship up to about 190ish kph. But the real great thing is that almost all part ecept some emblems and the working engine are from Ford. The rest has partnumbers from VW on it. Which makes getting parts fairly easy. Plus they are old that means there is a large amount or knowledge on the internet.

Hey Will, great build in that good ol' Galaxy! I used to have one and loved it for it's space but the motor died (old VW diesel, notorious for that). Had a completely removable bedframe built for this, so I could also fit two bikes in. It is retractable for one or two people. Now I've got an S-Max, I had the bedframe adapted and I'm also planning a new build. You inspired me a little but it will be different nonetheless!
@kathrinhartmann639213 күн бұрын
Still trying to narrow down which car to buy for car camping. Would you say the S-Max is the better option or did you prefer the Galaxy?
@dereinzigwahreRichi13 күн бұрын
@kathrinhartmann6392 Hi there, I had the first generation of the Galaxy, built in 2001, and an S-Max built 2008. The 2001 Galaxy was a joint venture of Ford, VW and Seat but should be dying out by now, I wouldn't advise for this. Generally I'd prefer the Galaxy even in more modern iterations as it has more height which helps a lot when sleeping in it. Also it might be available with sliding doors which you absolutely should take as they make camping life way easier. Unfortunately none are like the first ones where you had an even floor and could put seats in individually at 5 positions in the rear wherever you liked. That was so good and also the car had more interior height than the more modern ones. What I'd generally advise is building some kind of raised bed platform where you can store most of your stuff underneath. It'll drive you nuts to pile everything up on the front seats to have the back available for sleeping every single evening, I promise. That's why the height is important. I'm driving a Ford Transit Van meanwhile and that's not a car to take into towns, so a more compact multi role vehicle like the Galaxy is a good choice for camping now and then.

Hi again Will. Such a shame that the newer versions of Galaxy, S-Max and even the VW Sharan 7 seaters won't easily let you remove the 2nd and 3rd row of seats. Even when folded flat, you lose too much space. I'm now having to look at a Caddy Maxi Life or LWB Rifter to be able to achieve full seat removal for my conversion, but they're not ideal as look more like vans than cars or MPVs which doesn't help the stealth...

You should absolutely do this! I used to have an older Galaxy like this one which I built a removable bed for that I know refitted to use in my S-Max. The ceiling is not as high in the S-Max but definitely ok for two people on the smaller side. You can also cut down on mattress height when you're using self inflating camping matresses, which we often take anyway when going on trips.

Don't worry about your cleanliness obsession. I'm a lorry driver and I, like a lot of my fellow drivers, wear slippers to drive. After all, that's our living room, bedroom and chillspace. I like nothing more than parking up, sticking on the night heater, putting the lights on low and letting talksport or radio5live cover some footie, and talk me to sleep. Light arrangements are important and a diesel heater will make your life so comfortable. I was lying there all snug the other day in my pants and it was -8c outside. If you can pull a night heater out of a scrapped lorry do it. Or you could just run it from a separate diesel container. You can thank me later 👍 Oh, and get a dog. My pug Ronald is the best hot water bottle in the world.
