I'd like to add that this movie is from the '70s, and back then people got scared more easily. We live in a generation exposed to blood and death all over TV, so this doesn't seem so scary. I find it funny that you weren't scared as a kid though lol. I'm 19 and I watched this as a little kid I think I had a nightmare. Not scary now though.

Gene Wilder was brilliant as Willy Wonka. The lighting and the passengers feelings just added to this awesome scene. And the end of this scene was so perfect. The sound stops, and the screen goes black. Then, "We're here." SO much better then the recent one.

@johnmousseau3189

duuuude... it's very easy but there are multiple interpretations to this scene; most popular being wtf? but the strong moral implications of the film sugest that after exploring heaven (candy room) the sinners are shown an image of hell in order to mend their ways (much like dante's inferno). the poem was simply stating rather ironically that we don't know if we're going to heaven or hell but we can still change our lives to be more "saintly" like Charlie. I'm not even Christian and i got this! c'mon guys! allegory and stuff!

Think the intention is to intrigue. To make someone wonder to question what was the intention of this scene. I heard this scene was improvised. But considering the film's moral was to chase meaningful and worth while dreams. I thought this scene in particular conveyed the message of life's uncertainties on the path to those dreams.

It's okay. Everyone who wasn't Gene Wilder was just as freaked out as you. Nobody told them that Wonka was going to flash crazy scenery at them and recite sicko poetry to them.

The way Veruca's father repeated back "rowing" while nervously grinning and nodding his head, is exactly the perfect response to a hostage situation. 😅 Just go along with it for as long as it takes to get out... 😢

The stupidity hurts me so. Prelude by Marilyn Manson came out in 1994, the book in which this song was first written was published in 1964.

Marilyn Manson's version will never be as good as Gene Wilder's version especially since Manson's music is horrible.

No they didn't take any inspiration from him. If anything it was the other way around. This was written in 1964 - two years before The Doors ever had a hit record.

Not to mention, the music leading up to Bambi's mother's death. It's so creepy and foreboding. It almost sounds like the Jaws theme. The music always freaked me out more than her actual death.
