I'd like to add that this movie is from the '70s, and back then people got scared more easily. We live in a generation exposed to blood and death all over TV, so this doesn't seem so scary. I find it funny that you weren't scared as a kid though lol. I'm 19 and I watched this as a little kid I think I had a nightmare. Not scary now though.

Gene Wilder was brilliant as Willy Wonka. The lighting and the passengers feelings just added to this awesome scene. And the end of this scene was so perfect. The sound stops, and the screen goes black. Then, "We're here." SO much better then the recent one.

I love that Roald Dahl himself wrote the script for the movie. Even though he wasn't 100% happy with it I think the effort shows, especially in scenes like that. His dark edge becomes obvious. But that's what kids love. Parents hate but kids love.

duuuude... it's very easy but there are multiple interpretations to this scene; most popular being wtf? but the strong moral implications of the film sugest that after exploring heaven (candy room) the sinners are shown an image of hell in order to mend their ways (much like dante's inferno). the poem was simply stating rather ironically that we don't know if we're going to heaven or hell but we can still change our lives to be more "saintly" like Charlie. I'm not even Christian and i got this! c'mon guys! allegory and stuff!

Think the intention is to intrigue. To make someone wonder to question what was the intention of this scene. I heard this scene was improvised. But considering the film's moral was to chase meaningful and worth while dreams. I thought this scene in particular conveyed the message of life's uncertainties on the path to those dreams.

Not to mention, the music leading up to Bambi's mother's death. It's so creepy and foreboding. It almost sounds like the Jaws theme. The music always freaked me out more than her actual death.

I first saw Wonka when I was 12 (I remember my teacher reading it to me when I was 6). This sequence I thought was pretty strange when I first saw it. Now I can see why many people consider this a cult movie.

I never saw this as a child. Don't know if it was cut out on my VHS version, or if my parents skipped it, but at the age of 7, I'm pretty damn glad they did.
