The grease grooves can be added on the lathe using a boring type of bar and running slow. You can set stops up on the lathe for a groove near each end of bushing, and hand travel carriage running on slowest speed between stops. You will end up with a groove near each end, and connecting X pattern between them. Each groove can be .030 to .050 deep. Experiment a few times to come up with what you prefer. I think you'll like it. I enjoy your videos. Your explaining and attention to detail to make something right, is very good. Some other videos lack so much compared to yours. You are one of the knowledgeable people on KZbin worth watching. I hope you keep doing what you're doing.

Agree with all the other comments. The line up and the grease issue are both tips that are new to me. I'll be paying attention to both those things from now on. Thanks Brian!!

Don't worry about telling us things we may already know, it is always nice to see that others use the same technique that we do.To stop the grease oozing out of the propshaft centre hole I just use a piece of rubber pond liner and hold it in place with a nice thin leaf of old roadspring, wait till I hear that crack noise as it comes out at the seal end, thanks for posting this. Thanks again for another comment Chris. I get so many driveshafts in the shop that are rusted or worn out in the spline area so wanted to get the word out there. Good tip, hope others see it.

for greasing the splines i use a piece of old tire inner tube and a wooden wedge to close the small hole , works great.

Joe, great tip, hopefully other folks will see it here. Good to know there are other people out there who realize that the splines need to be fully greased. Thanks for the comment.

I didn't realize they had to line up like that, phased, so I better check my CJ5 and make sure I didn't screw that up. Good tip.

Yes, they must be in alignment or you will get some vibration or wear things out very quickly. Keep watching many more videos coming.

Glad you are getting some tips from my videos, that is the reason I am putting them out there. Lots of driveshaft problems can be traced to misaligned U joints, so check yours out and make sure they are correct.

Glad you were able to find a good steering bearing, most of them these days are junk. The one I make gets rid of all the problems and allows you to grease it. Keep watching for more tips and idea.

Is it normal for the caps to be welded on these shafts? They are on my ‘46 Cj2a, the joints do not have grease fittings.

how do you get the shaft apart?
@JCROWLEY3209

I have A TON of sound coming from underneath while coasting speeds above 20. My first step was to weld the rear yoke dust plate back on because it broke loose and rattled like crazy. I now see that my yokes are off 90*. So my question is, once I take off the rear shaft should I just be able to literally pull it apart, and then push it back in correctly? Assuming it’s not all torn up inside. Last thing to note. I’m getting vibration into the T90 transmission (everything looks good in there) so I’m assuming it’s coming from the rear shaft issue. I’ll drive with the rear shaft removed in 4WD to confirm this I guess. Also, my rear axle sits significantly lower than the T90. Previous owner has it lifted about 2 inches. Not sure if this is making the issue worse and how to fix this besides taking apart the entire lift? Cj2a btw. Any tips or advice would really help me out.

Yes, you can take the shaft apart and put it in alignment, just make sure splines are in good shape. The transfer case can make a lot of noise if the intermediate shaft bearings or shaft are worn. Unless your U joints are binding you shouldn't have a problem. I can usually chase down noise/vibration to the transfer case. You may want to pull the whole assembly out and take it apart and inspect.

I just put it all back together correctly. Sound is totally gone, everything was just so misaligned when the previous owner installed the rear drive shaft. Thanks for the video, thanks for the help! Also my splines were still in good conditioned and greased well.

Can you recommend a number of suppliers you use. You said you do not use a supplier from Georgia, did you mean a supplier in SC?
@metalshaperJeep
@metalshaperJeep 7 жыл бұрын
I try to use NOS parts or parts I make myself in the restorations I do. I will not use parts from Omix-Ada, and the problem is they are a large supplier to many of the jeep parts dealers out there. If you are doing a very authentic restoration please let me know and contact me directly at metalshaper@comcast.net if you are looking for high quality parts.
