Definitely an interesting test and really interesting when I slow the footage down in slow motion. The energy transfer was really good!
If it's a choice between 9mm and 223 what are you choosing?
This was a good video in my opinion and like I mentioned at the end, we are only getting started. I want to see what a 300BO self defense round will look like in the gel along with a 12ga slug!
Check out some of my other videos!

Get yourself a heat gun and smooth out the sides of the block. It makes it truly transparent. You don't need much heat or even time, but it dramatically increases visibility.

That's just from the shipping but now that both blocks have been expended (but I might do ONE more test), I need to melt them down. Then the sides will be smooth. But yes, heat gun next time 😎

They are designed to do that. When it comes to "defensive" rifle rounds, fragmentation is probably the most destructive wounding mechanism. Silver tip is specifically designed to dump all of its energy inside of a two legged animal. Winchester makes some really nasty bullets. I also like the fact that if Winchester says it is 5.56 then you know it is actually 5.56 pressure. There are several companies that will sell something as 5.56 when it is realistically only at .223 pressure.

Thank you for posting. I'm a new subscriber. I chose the Federal Fusion .223 for home defense based on past experience with the fusion bullet. I've harvested a lot of deer with that and was always impressed. Might be worth testing in a gel.

Fragmenting with decent penetration is good. It reduces risk of a pass-through hitting something you don't want to. Some of the LEO rounds are "barrier blind" which might be useful for them in non-urban environs, but could be very bad inside a home if you miss the perp. I've been wondering what the Silvertip does . . . thanks for doing the test!

I use the polymer tip A Max self defense rounds in my 556 rifle and just about any open tip defense at that range will nuke the projectile due to the speed.

Enjoyed the video. I have a 7” AR9 with a YHM R9 suppressor and a 11.5” AR with a Sierra-5 suppressor. For a few home defense situations. I prefer my AR9. It’s shorter, lighter and quieter. Follow up shots are also easier. Have a 9” 300BLK as well. Just not a fan of rifle calibers inside the home.

Check out the Federal 64gr SP power shok I believe. FBI just chose it for the it rifles. Tested out of a 11.8 barrel.

I was hoping these were going to be a slightly deeper penetrating Hornady TAP round but definitely appears the bullet doesn’t fragment nearly as much and don’t have that initial huge wound cavity you see with the tap.

Nice video, sir. Awesome to see these in action! One suggestion: try and find something with more FPS for slow motion..less disorientation.

Andrew / Winchester Been Making Winchester Silver Tip Ammunition Since the 1990's . Wasn't That Great Back Then , Now Even Now ! You Are a Newbie on Ammo Buying . I would Try Winchester 223 69 Gr. Match Hollow-Point Ammo. Good on 1/8 Twist AR Platform.... It Pricey on Wallet , But It Shoots .. Coyotes Don't Like-Them-Much , puts them to Sleep Forever !

300 blackout HPBT with a good silencer for home defense. You won’t have time to put on your cans if you hear a bump in the night and if you have the stones to shoot an AR indoors you will definitely damage your hearing 😬 Cool video! Thanks for doing it
@andrewmconrad
@andrewmconrad 2 жыл бұрын
I had a conversation about that with someone. He keeps ear pro at his bedside in the event of a bunp in the night situation. But yes, I agree, a 300BO with a good silencer will be ideal in terms of hearing protection

Home defense why 25 yards, this is close combat yards are feet what ever the muzzle velocity is 7-10 feet away is your target that velocity isn't going down that much. Unless there are no walls in your house it's room to room.

Andrew , I called Sierra Bullet Co.Customer Service , some time ago . My question was on the 69 gr. MatchKing Twist Rate . The gentleman stated you can use Either 1/8 Twist in AR Platform and 1/9 twist in Bolt-Action Rifle. The 69 gr. MatchKing Will Work in Either Twist Rate. Look up Item Numbers in MidwayUSA Site a See What You Like a Price also.. I have shot Fiocchi myself .They Are Impressive at 100 Yards at Less at ( .5 ) Shot Groups . Winchester ( 335248 ) 69 Grain Sierra MatchKing Fiocchi ( 686502 ) 69 Grain Sierra MatchKing
