Winchester SX4 Final Review- Do Not Buy This Gun- You Will Be Disappointed

Today it is September 1st 2021, It is opening day of Michigan's early goose season and to celebrate I will be conducting my final review of my Winchester SX4 Waterfowl Hunter DRT ! I have owned this gun for about a year now and have put it through its paces. Come sit down with me as I tell you what I truly think of this Winchester SX4.

Thanks for the review. Ive been running a 12 28" SXP waterfowl. I advise the carlsons 2 pack. Good combo. I want to get a 20 sx4 for upland hunting since that is my main focus and keep my SXP for waterfowl and dove.

I bought my SX4 last year. I really like it. It definitely shoots whatever I feed it and does so flawlessly. As for the wrapped versions, I figured that they would eventually start to come off. This is the exact reason that I bought the ceracote version. They are great shotguns for reasonable prices. Only issue I have is that now I want a 20 guage too!!!! PS...I didnt have any trouble at all understanding what you were saying. Have fun and be safe.

I absolutely love my SX4. It has changed shotgun shooting for me. I actually prefer it over my SBE3. I sold my Retay to buy the SX4. It fits me. The recoil is amazing. I shoot it great. The trigger is amazing. I can’t say enough good things about the gun.

I might be interested in this as a backup gun. So far I have heard their chokes are under par ? Finish is under par ? Pattering : Is POA the same as POI , Is it 50 :50 with lead and steel? Have you tried it in the freezing rain, ice fog or conditions like that ? I have heard that you have to disassemble the stock if you tip with this gun ? How difficult is that ? Drill a hole , really ?

I have not had any issues with the SX4, Chokes seem as good as any factory choke I have used in the past, I have not had any issues with the finish. POA and POI is as close as a shotgun will be without perfecting it with a red dot or such. Freezing temps yes, regular rain yes not freezing rain or ice. Fog yes no issues. Taking the stock off is like any other I haven't had to do so though. I love the sx4 and if you gave it a shot I think you would too. Thanks for watching and good luck on your adventures !

My biggest regret after buying my SX4 is that now I want one in 20 guage. Like you, I dont have the budget for that....yet. Absolutely love this shotgun, and I have shot several of the others out there. Keep after those waterfowl and you will get there. Have fun, shoot straight, and be safe out there.

I’m looking into getting into Duck hunting next season. My uncle has an sx4 and every time I’ve shot it I’ve loved it. And I love the look of the hybrid hunter with the shadow grass/FDE combination. And for the price I think I’m going to get the sx4 hybrid hunter. Great review!

You had me going for a second, I picked mine up in 2021 and I've had no end of joy with it. I am planning on picking up the rifled barrel for it and stumbled across your video. I'm currently in the search of a good review of the rifled barrel so if anyone has got any knowhow on it let me know!

Mine is 5 years old and has yet to fail once on me. The only failures I had were shell related. This season a box of monarch shells failed to fire due to faulty primers and last season Kent shells had bad crimping and wouldn't feed half the time. I have no problems with Kent now, just was likely a bad batch. Gun has been in mud and underwater more times than I can count. Part of walking in the marsh and falling in the mud. Last thing is the gun fell out of a truck going 55 mph. We were pheasant hunting in south Dakota and we were supposed to creep down this field so I set my gun in the bed of a truck on top of our equipment as we were only supposed to go 5-10 mph. Well after we stopped on the otherwise of the field, we talked for like 15 minutes forgetting my gun was laying on top of some stuff and we took off down the road to head to another field and as we crested a hill, one of the trucks was dead stopped in the middle of the road and we swerved to miss them and my gun went flying out of the truck and slid 50-60 yards down the road. A little road rash and it still runs flawlessly. It's a tough, tough gun and has been used and abused and has yet to fail. Very reliable!!!

@MAD Outdoor Adventures yes sir, it's a good gun! Another thing that isn't often mentioned is good the recoil management is compared to how light it is for a 3.5 inch 12 gauge. Not the softest shooting gun out there but for the light weight, it doesn't kick hardly at all.

Compared to my Mossberg 835 which weighs quite a bit more the SX4 doesn't kick at all, the recoil management is very nice with this one !

Ran a SX4 for 2 seasons - Traded it in last week on a A400. For me the SX4 really felt bulky and didn't fit me well. With my friends vintage Cooey single shot break barrel I limited out with shells still left in the first box, and the next day with the SX4, two boxes were spent and I did not hit the limit. To add Injury to insult, the sx4 would also pinch the thumb if you didn't pay attention topping it up, worst case scenario it catches your glove and pinches them in there in a way it the glove is stuck - found myself with only 1 round chambered several times due to the PITA having to take off your gloves constantly I was starting to avoid doing it.

Thinking of grabbing one of these or the berreta a300 ultima. Fit and finish on the berreta is really nice. Haven’t checked out the sx4 yet, a gun shop not too far has one. My younger son just got a 930 mossberg for hunting pretty much anything and he’s loving it.

I really enjoy the SX4 and I cant find a bad thing to say about it, among many others I have heard the same reports. Beretta makes real nice guns as well so I am sure that wouldn't steer you wrong. I was always interested in the Mossberg 935 but there are a lot of iffy reviews out there so I stayed away from it, I am glad your son is loving his 930. I grew up using a Mossberg 500! I shoot a Browning, Winchester is now made by them, so you are correct in the assumption at the beginning of the vid.. As far as chokes go, try a JEBs, I use a .690 for dove, duck, and geese, and a .650 for turkey, they are amazing... I'm about to get a SX4 20ga and I'll get a JEBs choke for it before I ever shoot it.

shot carlson's cremator ported MR in my 12ga sx4 and its shooting really high. 3inch 3shot steel shells, also tried, BB and #2 shot 3inch shells. I aim at something and the poi is like 5inches or more higher! Do you think its my shotgun or the choke? the gun is brand new shot less than 50shells. I"m extremely disappointed. Please help.

Some guns like different choke tube/ammo combinations. I would start with the choke tube, try the ones that came standard with the gun and see if POI is still 5 inches high. If it is I would then look into the shells you have maybe try a different brand or borrow a few from a buddy just to see if it acts the same. If after both change of choke tubes / shells if it is still shooting high you can then look at the gun and see if there is something going on with it. Mine is the Turkey version with the 3 1/2” chamber and it won’t cycle target loads. Gotta run expensive shit for it to cycle. I’m gonna buy another with the 3” chamber for sporting clays

If you have problems with a SX4 it's because you throw it in your gun case wet don't take it out till the next time you hunt. Keep it cleaned and lubed well it hammers out any load flawless.

I couldn't hit shit with it the first year I had it. Then I found it's happy shells I started using modified choke with 3.5" #2 shot with 1 3/8 load with both Winchester and Federals now I am knocking birds dick's in the dirt from teals to geese.

This shotgun is a beast. Ive taken it to venice, la and hunted with it all day in 17 degree temps in dumping ice storms. I was worried that it would have rust issues hunting in the brackish waters and it did better than the higher end berettas and benellis which rusted pretty quickly. It fired and cycled reliably every single load I put through it except Kent Fast Steel( light primer strikes-shells are trash) . You're getting a 1200$ shotgun at a value in the SX4 -

My Sx4 will spit any shell I put in it from really light 2-3/4” to 3 1/2” turkey loads and patterns amazing! I hunt in utah, and we some really cold and brutal hunting conditions with terrible salty water and mud. And I’m in the field a lot more than the average hunter. Honestly I shoot factory full and it LOVES 4’s

I bought one a couple of years ago and straight out of the box after a brief strip and clean I first put some 24 gram steel loads through it and it performed flawlessly and then took it all the way to 63 gram 3 1/2" lead. Shot everything I put through it. Can't fault it.

I’ve owned my sx4 for 5 plus years, shot in all weathers in Uk, never jammed and is a joy with a Teague half choke, taken thousands of pigeons easy to strip and clean , get one you won’t be disappointed.

As someone who hunts an average 3-5 days a week and shoot pigeons At least once a week out of season this gun is the best 1000 bucks I ever spent, I’ve put COUNTLESS rounds through it never not one time had a malfunction that I can remember, everything from 2 3/4 7/8 ounce loads to 3 1/2 ounce an 1/2 loads and just keep going😂 just bought a 20 and another 12 they are the SHIT

Drill a hole in the bottom of the butt stock for drainage of water that gets in the hollow butt and rusts the steel rod that holds the return spring.

I bought an SX4 2 years ago and I regret it. Biggest piece of junk i've ever shot. I literally have to break it down and clean it after every 2-3 hunts or it won't feed and the trigger pull gets up to 10 lbs. I've shot a remington 1187 for the last 25 years and never had problems like this. I would spray it with a water hose and let it dry then a few squirts of rem oil. I only tore it down at the end of the year. Shot dozens and dozens of cases through it and the only issue was broken o ring. Don't buy this gun if you hunt hard.

From everything I hear it seems like your SX4 is the exception to the rule, I am sorry to hear you are having problems with it. I would get an SX4 12 gauge with a 26 inch long barrel. 3 inch is all you need so the 3.5 is not my cup of tea.

The SX4 12 gauge 26 inch barrel with a 3 inch chamber is on my list and I will be using that as a field gun. However the SX4 kicks so softly 3.5 inch magnums are not a bother at all that will be what I am using for Waterfowl and Turkey. Thanks for watching and good luck on your adventures !

@@MAD_Outdoor_Adventures - OH yeah! They are great guns for sure, shoulder well and POA is as good if maybe not better than the SBE3. I can tell the difference in the build quality from the 3 to the 4, the stock has a flex ability in it and a “ hollow” feeling. But that dang bolt slams shut and is SOLID .......I like that! I’ve also got a Versa Max and it’s backing up the SX’s.....not a bad gun either just feels a little heavier and bulky, especially on the forearm..JMO Needless to say, they aren’t going anywhere..👊👊👊🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Should change the title of this video.. very misleading. I have the same gun and love it. Upland, waterfowl, turkey. It's a beast for a midrange priced semi auto. It'll take any loads you put through it and a very manageable recoil.

I can't get mine to cycle 2 3/4 winchester target rounds. Won't cycle 00 either.. itll cycle the 3 in turkey just fine, and the herters 2 3/4 slugs.....think mines a lemon, my buddies eats all......

I am sorry your SX4 is having these issues and honestly I am shocked to hear it, as everyone I know with one this hasn't come up. I will say I have never shot Slugs or Buckshot out of mine but I would be surprised if it didn't perform with these rounds. Did you try to call Winchester, I sure would if I were you try to see if you can get it straightened out so you don't have these issues anymore. I hope you can get it sorted out, happy shooting !

Yeah, It's the same here in MI. Hard to find any 12 gauge, I stumble across some slugs or buckshot here and there but as far as Birdshot for, Waterfowl, Turkey's or even Upland and Small Game - Forget about it unless you want to pay a crazy price. Hopefully things go back to normal sometime soon !

I am a lefty and this is going to be my only option to replace my Browning BPS which should be charged for war crimes against humanity for the brutal punishing recoil it has with 3.5" rounds. I also cannot justify the price of the Bennelli SBE at double the price of this Sx4, that would be a quick trip to divorce court.

Yes Winchester and Browning are the same company. The A5,Maxus 2,Silver,Gold,and Sx4 are all made in Portugal so you know it's good quality the Portuguese don't mess around when it comes to quality. Yes the guns had some quality and control issues when they first came out. However after the first year all the issues have been worked out. For the price you can't go wrong.
