How do you determine what hour mile rile do you have?
@jrcumming997r6
@jrcumming997r6 Жыл бұрын
Use a ballistic calculator like 4DOF to determine the exact wind speed (in mph) that makes your wind hold close to .1 mils for every 100 yards of distance you’re shooting. My 6.5 creedmoor, for example, is a 6mph gun. That means with a 6mph crosswind at 600 yards, I’ll hold .6 mils for wind. At 500 yards I’ll hold .5 mils, etc. if it’s a 12mph crosswind, I double it, so at 600 I’d hold 1.2 mils. I think of it as just a starting point for my mental math

You didn’t mention spin drift so your correction if this same wind was coming from 11oclk vs 1oclk yield different holds. How do you do a quick and dirty compensation for spin depending upon L or R wind drift?
@MODERNDAYSNIPER
@MODERNDAYSNIPER 8 ай бұрын
Spin drift isn't always a factor to necessarily compensate for. Yes, it exists. How much is there is dependent on the bullet you're shooting. A 6.5 CM shooting 147's from a 7.5" twist barrel has about 2 tenths at 800 yards. Inside of that it's about a tenth. Inside 800 I'm going to be using hard data, and outside of 800 I'm (generally) going to have some time and opportunity to derive a precise firing solution from a computer program. On the 30 cal side though, spin can be significantly more with a 308 having upwards of 4 tenths at 800 when using a 1:9" barrel. This isn't ideal, for the exact reason your stated question exists. The only way to do anything hasty is to simply know your data and how much spin you have every 100 yards or so and either add it or remove it from your wind call.

Here’s a fact: Every rifle is an MOA wind constant rifle. For example a .223 77 grain round at 2750 ft per second has an MOA wind constant of 10 at 600 yards. Knowing that constant the wind hold can be determined via this formula: yards to target divided by 100 times wind value in mph divided by constant of 10. So let’s say the mid range wind is a crosswind which is raising dust and blowing loose paper. This would be appraised as a full value 10 mph wind and the formula looks like this for a target 600 yards from shooter’s firing point: 600 yards divided by 100 equals 6 times 10 mph equals 60 divided by constant of ten equals 6 MOA or 36 inches of favor. Now, who teaches this method? The United States Army Marksmanship Unit, that’s who. I know because for many years I assisted the USAMU deliver Squad Designated Marksman Training. Now here’s why you cannot describe a rifle in the example I just presented as a 9 mph rifle or any other speed rifle, the MOA wind constant decreases as target distance increases and thus the shooter not only needs to be able to appraise wind velocity and direction but he must also memorize the MOA wind constant for the distance to target in about 300 yard increments. Now, how does this actually work in the field? For me and thousands of others it helped us earn the US Distinguished Rifleman Badge and the American High Power Rifleman Award in Long Range.

@charlesludwig9173 5 ай бұрын
@@centerfiresuppressionllc682 it’s this easy: target distance in yards / 100 X wind value in mph / MOA wind constant equals wind counter in MOA. The constant for Mk262 at 600 yards is 8. So let’s use this formula for a full value 10 mph crosswind shooting at a 600 yard target with Mk262: 600 /100 = 6 X 10 mph = 60 / 8 = 7.5 MOA of wind drift, or 45 inches of favor. Now the 10 mph wind if not a crosswind could be a quartering wind which will have half value of 5 mph or a wind coming or going to 12 o’clock of your position which has 0 mph value. That’s it.

What does it mean to have a 9mph gun? What cartridge were you shooting? Are you saying you just use the kestrel? Isn't there a method of backing off the parallax about a 1/3 to watch the direction of the heat waves on the way to the target?
@RangerCaptain11A
@RangerCaptain11A 2 жыл бұрын
if your scope is in mils, compare your wind correction to your distance for 3, 4, 5 etc mph full value winds. at some wind speed your correction will match. caylen said he had a 9mph gun meaning at windspeed of 9mph his wind correction is 0.2 at 200 yards, 0.5 at 500, 0.6 at 600.

@@RangerCaptain11A how do you determine what mph your rifle is??
@RangerCaptain11A
@RangerCaptain11A 2 жыл бұрын
@@GHC2750 when your wind correction in mils matches the distance to target, like for a 5 mph windspeed your correction is 0.2 mils @ 200 yards etc. i made a table of distances like 200, 300, 400, 500, etc, then using my ballistic app i wrote the wind correction for 2, 3, 4, 5, etc mph wind at 90 degrees (full value), and i saw my rifle is a 4 mph gun. so if i'm shooting in a 4 mph wind, at a 600 yard target, my wind hold is 0.6 mils. if the wind gusts to 8 mph, my hold doubles, so 1.2 mils. if it drops to 2 mph my hold is 0.3 mils.

Our home range has no trees. Vegetation doesn't tell you much out west; sage brush appears to move the same in 30 mile per hour winds as it does in 5 mile per hour winds. Your first comment on clicks is confusing as well - we don't speak in clicks for adjustments.

@@MODERNDAYSNIPER clicks on the turrets no matter MOA or Mil. I just went to a long distance course for one day at a cost of over $500.00 and the whole course outside in the sun entailed Kestrel Ballistic Calculators and shooting 35 rds. @ 200 to 500 yds. Tip: take the first number in the distance multiply by mph. wind using a cheap $35.00 Kestrel and divide by 12. So at 500 yds with 6 mph winds you move turrets 2 clicks and lead into the wind to left of target and you good.

You are right , no instruction here on how to appraise wind. Wind velocity is appraised by what its environmental effects are, that’s to say what the effect of wind looks and feels like or what heat mirage indicates.For example a wind that raises dust and blows loose paper is going to be an 8 to 12 mph wind.
