In this video, former USMC Scout/Sniper Caylen Wojcik of Modern Day Sniper discusses his process on producing handwritten DOPE cards.
Technology is a fantastic tool, and you can leverage our ballistic calculator as a tool to dramatically speed up your ability to verify your bullet trajectory far more accurately than what was done in years past, and with far less expenditure of ammunition. Further, our ballistic computer programs can give us precise predictions in any clime or place so you can be prepared for the environment you'll be operating in.
Once we verify that our computer is sending us the truth we then transfer that data to a hard DOPE card, because that data has now been proven on previous engagements, hence the acronym D.O.P.E. It's 100% safe to say that if we verify that data under one set of conditions, your computer will provide equally accurate predictions under different conditions by manipulating the variables to reflect the conditions you're going to be operating in. Is it always a good idea to verify under those conditions if you can? Absolutely, but we've proven time and again that it's not necessary.
Why handwritten when we could use a .csv file? Easier, right? Well, yes, but not necessarily if we're looking to complete the human learning process and begin committing this data to memory. Through writing we're working the body's kinesthetic learning modality, thus reinforcing the visual learning modality, considering that the auditory modality isn't present in this particular process.
It really works and we'd encourage you to try it for your next range session! This video would have saved me so much time last year. Thanks for the pointers on the DOPE cards. Like the idea of colored pens. Much easier to read.

I like to use a .5 and a 0.8mm pen. This would make my intervals stand out. In excell you can print ever 2nd line in a light gray or blue, will make your eye catch and read your dope much easier. Ps. Wind 1 and wind 2 will help in the same card

Great example. I like to write the range in black pen and then the dial in black pen but highlighted with yellow highlighter and it almost illuminates the dial. Also if the stage has diamonds in a way out and circles on a way in I draw the symbol in front of both range and elevation, so it’s Kindergarten style.

Great idea. What I usually do is draw the target number or shape over the range number value so all I have to do is visually process either the number or shape when I'm in the moment. It's super easy for me and my eyes.

What is your reasoning behind not using the Kestrel or phone in real-time at the match for DOPE for each specific target and wind?

Hey Morgun, It' all depends on the time and opportunity afforded. Generally speaking anything at about 800 and in I'll go off of hard data because A. that's how I hunt and how I train snipers so I like to keep my brain trained for what I'm going to use these skills for in a practical sense. B. There's no need to use a Kestrel or a phone for targets inside that 800 yard marker. We find that it creates a lot of doubt in the shooter's mind and gets them worried about things that they really shouldn't be worried about. If I've got a long range stage in front of me and my targets are 800 and out, I'll defer to my ballistic computer for the most precise solution. In a hunting environment, I'll typically set my threshold for that based on the current wind conditions, but it's usually about 600-700. Beyond that, I'll consult the computer to make sure I've got the most accurate data. Truth be told, it's never much different, if at all, from my hard data card. Granted, that 800 yard mark is going to change for various cartridges, MV's and BC's. The industry's reliance on gadgets is a tough one to break. Apologies for the delay in response here too, hope you're well. -Caylen W.

great vid Caylen, but you got wind deflection as a line for 6 wind, 200 - .2, 300 - .3, 400 - .4, 500 - .5, 600 - .6 so you can easy predict your hold for that wind. my tip is do your dope with a wind speed that deflection is curved not a line. I know that you know what I mean. You just have to know that bullet you use in what wind speed it has a line deflection. make dope for 8 mph wind 6mph you know is a line data, 8 mph will be curved yet. shoot it smart
